Okay, okay, I know what I'm dealing with here. There are huge fans of Apple, and then there are, well, everyone else. Honestly, I'm not a diehard fan either way, I find uses for both a Mac and a PC. I really love the iPad, but I'm no snob, show me something that does more stuff, and I'll switch in a heartbeat. That being said, I am still excited about Apples jump onto the 3D bandwagon. Apple has a patent for a 3D display that doesn’t require glasses, this patent was approved only several days ago, even though it was applied for in September of 2006. Of course Apple is not the first company interested in these displays. However, Apple’s patent covers a really amazing technology involving a system that could deliver high-quality 3D images to multiple viewers with no funky glasses required. Yes! It sort of works like this, the image would be projected onto a reflective, textured surface, that somehow would allow the pixels to be bounced into a viewer’s left and right eye separately, producing the 3D effect. it actually senses the locations of both eyes of each viewer, so multiple people could watch from many different angles. Coolness. So if I have this correct, someday soon we could be sitting around our living room watching a sort of hologram in front of us… I don't know about you, but THAT'S what I've been waiting for. And somehow, like it or not, Apple is probably just the company to make it happen, just that way. I hope they get it done, they usually do. I'll bring the popcorn. When the driver runs out of air, he or she goes to refuel. These air refueling stations are not just giant tanks of compressed air, but they are air that comes from huge wind turbine generators that are mounted on balloons with flying kites on them. It sounds pretty weird, doesn’t it? This is what the design team has done at Volvo, in an attempt to free the world from our dependence on fossil fuels. As much as I would like to say “good luck with that”, we clearly need to do our cars without oil. Not only is it environmentally friendly, but the oil companies could use a little loss of profits. This is why these refueling stations are powered by kites to make compressed air. There is a video of it after the jump so you can check out what the designers were thinking. I’m not certain if this Canyon Carver is made to go across canyon roads, but it is made to seat four so a whole group can enjoy the fun. The cars themselves weight about 902 pounds, and they are constructed with frames like motorcycles and boats. I wouldn’t mind driving one of these things myself. In all honesty, I don’t understand why this is the first time I am hearing about this. However, this project has been under “top secret” classification, but thanks to leaks (not Wikileaks) we know about it now. It was launched on April 22nd at Florida’s Cap Canaveral Air Force, and landed a few days ago at Vandenberg Air Force base in California. Yes, we can send up an automated space vehicle, and have it come back home again. I know you can’t get a good size of the spacecraft with this picture, but the X-37B is less than 30 feet long, and about 15 feet wide. That is one-quarter the size of the space shuttle. Since this is a test run of the shuttle, it is not really known exactly what it is supposed to do. According to my Source, some have feared that the X-37B could be used for the “weaponisation of space”, but that doesn’t seem to be on the agenda. Whatever the case, the X37B clearly must do whatever real human astronauts must do, unless they want to use the X2 robot program. As it were, most people are getting their films through Netflix either by streaming or snail mail. Any kiosk rental is usually done through Redbox. However, Flix on Stix is a company that could change that. I have a video of it after the jump so you can see the simplicity of it. The user simply goes up to the Flix on Stix kiosk and selects their film, and then sticks in a memory stick to download their video onto a portable memory drive. You might wonder if the downloading would take a while, and the answer is yes. Apparently, USB 1.0 would take six minutes, while USB 3.0 would make 14 seconds. (Yet another reason to upgrade to USB 3.0.) These videos are protected by a “cloak of encryption” and they do not have to be returned as they are self-deleting files that will activate once the renter’s time has expired. Apparently, the prices start at a dollar for three days, two dollars for six days, or even four dollars for 12 days. I’m not certain if those are accurate pricing figures. I suppose we will have to see if this Flix on Stix is as catchy as its name. Tech Cult – We cover the latest tech news, but always with a funny twist. The hot topic of the day appears to be the intrusive TSA body scans. It seems everywhere I go, it’s what everybody is talking about. No doubt it seems in contrast to our 4th amendment rights, but is it keeping us safe? Who knows? Well, I for one, have only been naked in front of my husband and 50 of my closest friends, and I don't relish the idea of being "scanned" regardless of what wonderful vacation I might be embarking on. Enter, Flying Pasties! Already available are the 2nd generation of privacy "stickers" for both men and women, scientifically proven to block radiation and keep your naughty bits invisible, some offer cute sayings, like, Objects are larger than they appear and others are a little more aggressive, by offering the person scanning you a middle finger salute. It's hard to tell, at present, just how items like this will be received by the TSA, and I suppose it may require you to go from the scanner to a pat down, but I guess I really need to feel like I have some kind of control over my naked body… If I didn't, I'd just go back to college.
