Digi-Bike to raise awareness on leaving valuables aside

Posted: 12 Aug 2010 03:17 PM PDT

If you hang around in Las Vegas for a few minutes, you’ll see these “billboard trucks” that serve no purpose other than to drive around with a giant-sized advertisement. They usually have pretty girls on them, for reasons that I won’t bother to explain here.

Apparently, this is the same purpose of the Digi-bike. Don’t ask me why it is called a bike, because it is a four-wheeled contraption. Perhaps Digi-wagon could be a better description.

The Digi-bike is some sort of weird contraption with a digital billboard with one purpose, as far as I know. It is designed to reduce the number of robberies in Dudley, UK.

Apparently, the billboard gives to raise awareness among people carrying valuables. Considering I once left my camera behind in a booth at E3, I would appreciate a friendly reminder. By the way, my camera was returned to me, and I’m assuming that it has nothing to do with this style of reminding.

So far, the plan for the Digi-bike will include coverage for Castlegate Leisure Park, Russells Hall Hospital car park, the zoo, the bus station, and the Tesco store at Burnt Tree Island.

I can’t help but wonder what else you can use the Digi-Bike for besides advertising. Maybe you can think of something.

USB Anion Air Purifier

Posted: 12 Aug 2010 03:00 PM PDT

Someday there will be no gadgets left that cannot be powered by a USB port.  They’ll all be shrunk down and in many cases suddenly be made much more cheaply.  There are times when that’s not necessarily good, but on occasion it makes certain devices very handy.  Like this little air purifier that plugs into your USB port.  It’ll make sure that you get clean air while you’re glued to your computer.

This air purifier works by emitting healthy negative ions into the air.  Then by attaching themselves to air molecules and any impure particles in the air it negatively charges them.  This will get rid of toxic substances in the air like odors, dust, mold and hopefully will help to rid you of that sweaty smell coming from the guy with serious pit stains.  Hopefully.  You can purchase one of these for $19 through USB Brando.

GE Visible You makes you a dancing skeleton

Posted: 12 Aug 2010 02:47 PM PDT

This is GE Visible You, on display at the Shanghai Expo. As you can see, it can help the user to act out their body as a living X-ray.

I’m sure that you’re probably wondering how this could be, as X-rays create a lot of harmful radiation. No, think of this like an application of the Microsoft Kinect. (Oh, a Kinect App, is there such a thing? Will there be?) As far as I know, it has nothing to do with the Kinect, though.

All the user has to do is stand in front of it, and it somehow reads you like a scanner and turn you into a moving skeleton. By the way, it can also scan you and give you a simulation of your muscular system and cardiovascular system. Of course, even though this is a real-time scan, don’t count on it finding any tumors.

Yes, I suppose this is one step closer to the X-ray screens that we saw in the movie Total Recall. They might be good at finding a gun, but I look forward to it when it can quickly find medical problems.

Until then, I hope that GE can somehow manufacture these things, and then put them in amusement parks or something. I wouldn’t mind letting one of these things scan me so I can see my interior organs on display.

USB Turtle Optical Mouse

Posted: 12 Aug 2010 02:28 PM PDT

I swear turtles are quickly becoming the new frogs.  Before there were tons of frog themed household items, but turtles being just as lovable, are quickly catching up.  This Tortoise Turtle USB Mouse is one way to show your love for the little guys.  For being a novelty mouse it still looks comfortable to use, which is definitely not always the case.

The turtle has all the usual features, it’s USB powered, has a scroll button as well as the typical 2 buttons.  It’s also, thankfully, an optical mouse.  It says it’s comfortable for both right and left handed use, but being a left handed person I can’t say that I’ve ever had the urge to use the mouse with my left hand.  It’s currently in stock and ready to be shipped, all you have to do is pay the $15.99 charge.  You can find it through Source Square.

Robotic Wheelchair to Follow You

Posted: 12 Aug 2010 02:17 PM PDT

I’m not certain what comes to your mind when you read the words “robotic wheelchair” in the headline. Perhaps a normal wheelchair that is pushed by a robot like C3PO, or one that runs on completely on automation (like an R2-D2 wheelchair, if we can extend the Star Wars metaphor).

Actually, this is a concept project from the Saitama University Human and Robot Interaction Center. As you can see from the picture, there is no separate robot doing the pushing, but the wheelchair behind the person in the photo is automated, to some degree.

The wheelchair has a built-in distance sensor and camera system that can track the position of someone in front of them, and follow them. It can also follow someone who is on the side of them, which is easier for conversation.

This robotic wheelchair is definitely handy for temporarily alleviating wheelchair controls, which can be clumsy and awkward at times. It also comes in handy in rest homes and hospitals, where understaffed facilities can lead to one person pushing two wheelchairs at a time. If robotic wheelchairs are used, then it is possible that a train of wheelchairs can follow one person.

I guess this is the future, and I suppose it won’t be long before we see it being used all over. For now, it is still a concept.

Mini Risers keep it simple

Posted: 12 Aug 2010 01:58 PM PDT

My all time favorite accessories always seem to be the incredibly simple solutions.  The ones you really feel like you should have been smart enough to come up with on your own, but didn’t.  These Mini Risers are one of those items.  They don’t go overboard with big fans that you don’t always need.  Instead they just simply raise up your laptop to allow for all of that hot air to escape.

Truthfully, my laptop does get hot like most laptops out there, but I’ve never felt like it was really enough for me to rush out and buy an electronic laptop stand with dual fans.  I’ve had laptops before that need their own window air conditioner, but for my current one these Mini Risers would work perfectly.  If you think those little wire things will sit awkwardly in your laptop bag, you should check out their product site.  They have a picture that shows the perfect way to carry it without taking up extra space.  These come in a total of 10 colors, some falling in the subtle category while others go for that eye popping effect.  You can purchase these in sets of 2 for all of $7.95.

Creative Labs Aurvana In-Ear2

Posted: 12 Aug 2010 07:35 AM PDT

With the growth of portable audio and video, earphones/earbuds have become a necessity. Yet not all are created equal. If you are seeking a high quality portable experience look to Creative Labs Aurvana In-Ear2. This sequel to their award-winning Aurvana In-Ear headphones continues their trend of noise isolation technology in a comfortable, lightweight, convenient style. Creative Labs has enhanced sound quality over gen 1.

Having tested on an airplane, in the gym and just sitting at home I can say highs and lows were easily achieved. Bass was no problem, yet not overwhelming. Ambient noise was dissipated and volume levels were maintained – which will help you hear what you want to hear. The outer world will not disrupt your video, music or podcast while using Aurvana In-Ear2. They also did a great job of blocking others from hearing my material. So your listening experience remains yours.

For those addicted to noise cancellation headphone technology, like the author, Aurvana In-Ear2 are a pleasant alternative. No it is not 100% cancellation (nor does it claim to be), but it is a nice break from the bulk and discomfort of over ear products, while maintaining high quality sound. Aesthetically they are housed in an easy-to-carry case. Cable management offers good protection from the "elements" of backpacks, purses and the like. The form factor of the bud paired with various eartip sizes enables them to meet the shape of any ear. Other accessories include a cleaning tool and airplane adaptor.

Aurvana In-Ear2 is available at $99.99 from Amazon
