V-MODA introduces Vibrato noise-isolating in-ear headphones

Posted: 22 Oct 2010 05:00 PM PDT

Are you currently in the hunt for a new pair of headphones, but do not know where to look? Well, if the answer is in the affirmative and you don’t mind forking out a little bit extra over the regular bunch of headphones you see out there, then we would definitely want you to have a closer look at the V-MODA Vibrato noise-isolating in-ear headphones. Sounds like a mouthful to ask from the counter at Apple stores nationwide, but do read on and check out just what it can do before you relegate it away to a non-purchase category. Crafted from zinc alloy and featuring a Kevlar fabric cable with a 3-button remote and microphone, the Vibrato could very well be the ultimate multi-purpose earphone for anyone and everyone.

It was specially designed for music lovers who are stylish at the same time, as the Vibrato is impeccably sculpted from premium zinc alloy as mentioned thanks to patented die-casting metal technology. This innovative process will enable the Vibrato to sport a special geometric design, where it is found normally only on fine jewelry or watches, where it gives off a solid, durable feel which you cannot obtain from most plastic or aluminum headphones. This also means it won’t feel as though it will break at the slightest amount of pressure, which is always a good thing.

Even better is the fact that the Vibrato was masterfully tuned in collaboration with professional musicians, with the end result of recreating the sensations of a live music or club experience. It will feature an 8mm dynamic HD neodymium driver which delivers excellent vibrant bass, vivid mid-range, and vivacious highs. Thanks to the integration of its BLISS noise isolating technology, background noise is reduced effectively, resulting in a deep bass. Not only that, V-MASQUE technology enforces a strict tolerance for high and low frequency ranges, allowing every note on the Vibrato to sound as flawless as the next. How much for the Vibrato? It should shake $129.99 out from your bank account if you want one.

Joby introduces Gorillatorch Switchback

Posted: 22 Oct 2010 04:45 PM PDT

Mention Joby and chances are you will have the famous Gorillatorch Original and the Gorillapod line of innovative camera tripods coming to your mind. Well, we are pleased to say that you aren’t too far off the mark either with their latest release, as the new Gorillatorch Switchback is touted to be the ultimate companion for the outdoor enthusiast, where this unique combination of a lantern-headlamp will rely on the very same LED light array in a single form factor so that you will not have to carry two separate lights on your adventures, freeing up at least one hand (or a mouth if you love to bite on your torches). Using the latest in high-performance materials and LED light technology, the Gorillatorch Switchback will merge exceptional light quality with innovative product design. We will look at it in greater detail in the extended post, so hit the jump.

The Joby Gorillatorch Switchback will feature 5 powerful LEDs, where they include a 130-lumen CREE XLamp XP-G LED spotlight, sporting half a dozen brightness settings and an adjustable dimmer switch. Boasting a 92% ultra-efficient holographic lens that delivers brilliant and even light which is easy on the eyes even when viewed directly (this means you won’t get blinded), it is definitely a vast improvement over traditional lanterns that are available in the market at the moment. The whole idea behind the Gorillatorch Switchback? To create a lighting product that encourages strong social interaction in the same way that a campfire does, albeit without running the risk of burning down your tent, of course.

When functioning as a lantern, the Gorillatorch Switchback can illuminate an 8-person family tent or small cabin, which is more than ideal for any social gathering, ranging from meals at the campsite to an evening game of cards on the patio. You can always hook the Gorillatorch Switchback to the inside of a tent, sit it on a table or attach it to a branch thanks to the included flexible lantern stand. With its integrated design, you are able to make a quick transition to headlamp mode, where its ergonomic, woven headband can be comfortably worn for hours on end. The Switchback will retail for $59.95 a pop if you’re interested.

Hands on with the Inductive Charger from Energizer

Posted: 22 Oct 2010 12:04 PM PDT

We have reported on the Inductive Charger before, which looks to be Energizer’s answer to the Powermat and Wildcharger.

Some of you remember when I had a face-off between the other wireless chargers. If you recall, there was no victor for that contest. Both products do exactly what they advertise.

The Inductive Charger only has power sleeves for the Blackberry Curve 8900 as well as the iPhone 3GS and 3G. At least, for now.

As it is, Energizer’s Inductive Charger is a Qi inductive charger, which is its strongest feature. Qi is the new universal standard for inductive charging as established by the Wireless Power Consortium.

Apparently, it won’t be long before Qi-enabled devices will be on handsets, so you can lay them on Qi-enabled Inductive Chargers without the power sleeves that you have purchase for them.

Another thing that sets the Energizer Inductive chargers apart from other wireless ones is that there is an extra USB port in case you want to recharge some USB-powered devices I can’t remember if Powermat or Wildcharger have this feature. What works against the Energizer Inductive Charger is that there is no magnetic lock like its competitors.

All in all, I would say that the Energizer Inductive Charger is an investment in your future as you might be able to say that you were the first to get a Qi-enabled wireless charger and can now charge any mobile device made after a certain time in the future. You can get the Energizer Inductive Charger now for about $89.

MakerLegoBot: A Lego creation designed to make Lego creations

Posted: 22 Oct 2010 05:33 AM PDT

Remember that scene in Star Wars: Episode II where C-3PO sees a droid factory and says: “Machines building machines. How perverse”.

Clearly, my Source feels the same way about this Lego Mindstorms creation. Our pal Threepio would describe it as “Legos making Legos”. I don’t think that it would be perverse. I would call it cool.

If you are not familiar with Lego Mindstorms, they are very advanced Lego blocks that come with a mini computer so they can do programmed actions. In this case, Engineer Will Gorman’s MakerLegoBot.

As you can see from the photo, it can build up things like this blue structure here. Now that would be pretty impressive if it could build just that, but this can take a virtual 3D model and assemble it with lots of Lego bricks.

The only question is: where are all the Lego bricks that it is using for construction? Is it grabbing them from a secret location?

Actually, there is one other question: can this guy be programmed to create other Lego MakerBots? The creator is actually working on solving that particular quandary. I think my Source is having flashbacks to early Terminator movies on what comes next. All I can say is that those exoskeltons will look cool made of Lego.

Meet the robot bowler EARL

Posted: 22 Oct 2010 05:10 AM PDT

If they ever wanted to remake The Big Lebowski with robots, they would probably have to cast EARL in the film. I’m not certain if the bowling robot should be Jesus Quintana or The Dude.

EARL (Enhanced Automated Robotic Launcher) is a one-armed robot used by the Equipment Specifications and Certifications team of the National Bowling Congress to test gear.

EARL is one accurate robot that can hurl a ball from 10 to 24 miles per hour at 50 to 900 revolutions per minute, and make a consistent shot every time. Or so the creators thought. You might want to check out the video to see it go up against a professional bowler.

Here’s a Spoiler alert for the video. EARL recently showed up at the International Bowling Museum and Hall of Fame and bowled against PBA man Chris Barnes. It was a true man versus machine match like John Henry versus that hammering machine. The man won this time with 259 to 209, and the creators say that what caused EARL to lose is that it bowls consistently every time. Apparently, it scratches the oil on the floor and messes with Earl’s game.

Still, if I were a part of a bowling team, I would definitely want EARL on my side.

Another tablet hits the market in the form of the eLocity A7

Posted: 21 Oct 2010 06:26 PM PDT

The advent of the Apple iPad has certainly changed the way the tablet market worked, in a rather similar manner as with how the iPod actually offered a new revolution in the world of portable music. Sure, the Walkman by Sony back in the 1980s took the world by storm and sold plenty of cassette tapes in the process, while the Discman brought portable digital music to the forefront as folks started toting around CD pouches. Well, when the MP3 file format started to become really popular, there were basic MP3 players rolling out left, right and center (remember the Iomega models?), but none of them could actually hold a candle to the iPod when that came out, and it has remained that way ever since. Well, the same can be said about the tablet business. While prior to the iPad, most tablets were pretty boring because they didn’t really have that high a standard to aspire to, but when the iPad exploded onto the scene, things just changed. Other hardware manufacturers actually upped their game because they know that if they didn’t, it would be a failure in the market. Well, Stream TV Networks intends to hold their own with the eLocity A7 tablet, which has already experienced strong preorder sales on Amazon.com, while five more retailers will be taking preorders for the much anticipated device. We will look at the eLocity A7 in greater detail in the extended post.

First of all, the eLocity A7 will feature a seven-inch display, sporting an NVIDIA Tegra 2 mobile processor with Android 2.2 Froyo as the operating system of choice. Some of the other retailers who will carry the eLocity A7 include Sears.com, Newegg.com, PCMall.com, Walmart.com and MicroCenter.com, where all preorder units will be fulfilled beginning November 22, 2010. What makes the eLocity A7 special? Well, it is touted to be the first mobile tablet in the US that is powered by Android 2.2 Froyo, while being able to run the entire gamut of mobile apps, delivering support for Adobe Flash while enabling 3D gaming with the NVIDIA Tegra T-250 dual core processor. Other hardware specifications include a multi-touch screen, 4GB of high speed internal flash memory, wireless connectivity, HDMI output, a USB port, and a microSD memory card slot.

Verizon Wireless and Samsung to release Galaxy Tab this November for $600

Posted: 21 Oct 2010 06:17 PM PDT

Are you ready to rock and roll with the tablet market? If your answer is in the affirmative, then why haven’t you purchased an iPad already? What’s that? You prefer to shop around before dropping some serious money, eh? Well good news for you then – Verizon Wireless has teamed up with Samsung to release the Samsung Galaxy Tab this coming November 11th for $599.99 a pop, where it will be powered by the latest Android 2.2 operating system right out of the box so you don’t have to worry about it being bogged down by bugs in the older version. For more specific hardware details, you might want to check out in the extended post on just what the Samsung Galaxy Tab is capable of delivering.

The Samsung Galaxy Tab will come with a rather brilliant 7-inch touch screen display, delivering a robust HTML Web browsing experience that offers full support for Adobe Flash 10.1 for video and mobile gaming. You won’t find it lacking in terms of firepower either, as a pretty zippy 1GHz Cortex A8 Hummingbird Application processor is also there to ensure all your applications will run just fine, no matter the load you throw at it.

Apart from Android-powered applications that are hugely popular, you will also find special Verizon Wireless applications such as V CAST Music and V CAST Song ID, VZ Navigator, Slacker Radio, Kindle for Android, BLOCKBUSTER On Demand presented by V CAST Video, as well as the exclusive golf game known as “Let’s Golf”. Apart from text, picture and video messaging, the Samsung Galaxy Tab will also bring V CAST Apps to owners, which is actually Verizon Wireless’ mobile storefront that offers hundreds of applications for businesses and consumers at launch. Of course, there is no point in having the Samsung Galaxy Tab if you do not have an unlimited data plan, so it is good to see Verizon Wireless offers a monthly access plan from $20 onwards for 1GB.
