MSI does it again with new GX70 and GX60 gaming laptops

I do not know about you, but for me, a gaming notebook is a poor (an extremely poor one at that) substitute for a full fledged gaming desktop. After all, you do not have the luxury of a really large display for your eyes to enjoy superb visuals, not to mention the kind of audio that is pumped out from your notebook speakers tend to be lame – very. Of course, if you are a gaming addict, then at any time that you need to get that gaming fix of yours going, a gaming notebook would be the ideal solution. After all, something is better than nothing at all, right? MSI certainly knows that they have a couple of models in the market that will appeal to the masses, and they are the new MSI GX70 and the GX60.

These are armed with the AMD A10-5750M processor, and will have the Radeon HD 8970M graphics and Killer Game Networking card to accompany the notebook for a totally enthralling gaming experience on the go. In fact, the new and refreshed MSI GX70 and GX60 notebooks would also be the first AMD Richland A10-5750M powered gaming notebooks in the world.

We are looking at an increase in visual performance by up to 40% over previous generations, and not only that, the new processor will also increase battery life and CPU performance, which results in longer gaming sessions alongside a crisper, brighter and a more realistic visual experience. The MSI GX70 will be the higher end model between the two, where it also sports AMD's Eyefinity 3D technology which enables users to run multiple independent display outputs at once, while the Killer E2200 Game Networking card will theoretically eliminate lag time and a full color backlit SteelSeries Gaming Keyboard to get it going. Not only that, THX speakers with a built-in subwoofer are there for an ear thumping experience. Unlike just about all Ultrabooks in the market today, these two models will arrive with Blu-ray disc readers, a 1920×1080 full HD anti-reflective display and a 9 cell battery for extended mobile gaming pleasure. No idea on pricing or availability just yet though.

Remote Controlled Backyard Mosquito Mister

Sometimes, I do wonder whether some animals in this world are redundant. Case in point, does the pro of mosquito larvae being food for select animals outweigh the potential pest factor of a fully grown adult mosquito? Getting bitten by mosquitoes whenever you go out on a camping trip is no fun at all, you know. Thank goodness the advancements of technology in the modern world has led us to this particular road – a $299.95 Remote Controlled Backyard Mosquito Mister.

Should the Remote Controlled Backyard Mosquito Mister live up to its reputation (or at least, product description), then this backyard mister is capable of repelling mosquitoes within a 2,000 square feet area, and not only that, it can also be operated remotely from a safe distance away. It will rely on EPA-registered permethrin to get the job done, which so happens to be a synthetic form of naturally occurring pyrethrin that is derived from chrysanthemum, where it is good enough to kill up to 90% of mosquitoes, flies, gnats, no-see-ums, ticks, and other biting insects while repelling them for up to half a dozen hours with a mere four-minute misting. Don’t worry about toxicity levels, as permethrin biodegrades so fast, it is safe and gentle on the environment.

Weather Alert Emergency Handcrank Radio

When I was growing up, I always wondered what the heck was the weather channel there for. After all, who actually bothers to check whether it is going to rain or not tomorrow morning? Sure, mom would care a whole lot since she is the one who does the laundry at home, and she would obviously be upset if the skies literally rained on her parade. Golfers too, would know what I am referring to, so perhaps there is still use for the golf channel after all.

Enter the $59.99 Weather Alert Emergency Handcrank Radio, which pretty much does what it says, as it allows you to be prepared at all times for emergencies as well as power outages, thanks to an emergency AM/FM radio with NOAA weather band stations and the 'Alert' system. This is a hand cranked wonder that also doubles up as a flashlight when the situation calls for it, while sporting a red flashing beacon and is capable of powering your cell phone. You can choose to have it run on hand turbine power, solar power or a solitary AAA battery, it is your choice. Crank the hand turbine or place the solar panel in the sun for just one minute, and you get anywhere from 10 to 15 minutes of radio and flashlight use.

Sony develops Digital Paper device

Digital paper – does this particular term sound rather ironic to you? It does to us actually, although it is a kind of technology that we would more than welcome. Mention Sony and you would think of their Bravia TVs, the PlayStation consoles over the years, and of course, who can forget about the iconic portable music player line that kicked it all off – the Walkman? Having said that, Sony’s foray into the world of tablets has not exactly been an encouraging one to date where its track record is concerned, since their only major notable presence at this point in time would be the Sony Xperia Tablet Z. Well, perhaps they might be able to make larger strides than what they have already achieved with the aforementioned tablet if they were to incorporate some digital paper into future products. After all, Sony has successfully developed a 13.3" digital paper device, where the main aim would be to do away with paper educational materials and documents while helping improve learning effects and productivity among others.

Sony has every plan to propose new learning and working styles through the use of such a device, in addition to having it deliver, store, write and share electronic files over a network. As for the digital paper, Sony has made use of a 13.3" flexible electrophoretic display that relies on its own technology which will form TFTs on a plastic substrate with a high resolution (and that, our dear readers, would be the so-called electronic paper). This unique display can show up to 16 levels of grayscale and has a pixel count of 1,200 x 1,600.

Not only that, it is said that the thickness and mass of the digital paper are just 6.8mm if you do not take into consideration its pen holder and 358g, respectively. You can use it for up to three weeks on a single charge (and this is assuming that the Wi-Fi function is turned off, and PDF files are viewed for an hour each day), which will also include the use of the hand-writing function for five minutes per day. Anyone want to see Sony succeed?

Acer Iconia A1 Review – Unique Features at an Affordable Price

You know when a product category is hot. Think of the onslaught of smartphones once the big guys paved the way. Bam! Suddenly everyone – from your kid to your grandmother – had one. The category of 7-8" tablets seems to be the category of the moment. Plenty of good reasons exist too: they're easy enough to stash in a bag or hold in your hand or even tuck in a big pocket, smaller screen means smaller price which of course puts less hesitation in the mind when letting kids use and abuse it. But with such a hot category the quest becomes how to differentiate the product.

Acer made headlines in the last year putting a new spin on the laptop/tablet debate with their Iconia W7 and A5. Need a touchscreen laptop? You've got it. Need the portability of a tablet? Flip the screen around on the W7 and lay it down or detach it from the A5 and go on your merry way. Next up for Acer? Joining that fast growing category of 7-8" tablets which we here at Coolest Gadgets got a chance to preview. Launching in the next month, the Acer Iconia A1 should successfully vault them into the midst of the small tablet race with a 8GB version expected at $169 and 16GB version at $199. Affordability will certainly be the first point that will make the A1 stand out.

Like many other competitors, the A1 will run Android Jelly Bean 4.2 and offer a quad core processor. Jelly Bean enables the owner to create multiple users for one device – each being able to customize their tablet experience. No worries about the kids accessing your private "assets" when they want to play Candy Crush. The quad core also gave a speedy experience. The microSD slot will expand another 32GB so you can take your movies and music with you too.

Design-wise the A1 offers a healthy 7.9" screen and .43" (11.1mm) profile. One of those points of differentiation for Acer will be the 4:3 1024×768 XGA display. Some of you may consider a non 16:9 aspect ratio a deal breaker. OK, if video is your primary purpose for a small tablet we get it. But after playing with the unit we were pleasantly surprised at the 4:3 browsing, reading and gaming experience. Of course the physical drawback is that going with a larger 4:3 screen in a 7-8" tablet means a wider unit (145.7mm) versus say the Nexus 7 (16:9 and 120mm wide). So get ready to stretch your hand out to hold the unit. Another physical features worth a mention are a mini-HDMI port so you can plug in to your big screen. And as you would expect the A1 comes with cameras on either side including 5MP, 1080p capable version on the back.

The actual user experience definitely gives a few more points of differentiation. With our on-the-go society, instant access to your top apps becomes a necessity. Acer's Touch Wakeup function will enable direct passage to the app of your choosing from a locked screen by either double thumb touch or five finger twisting motion. Personally this would be a great feature to always have your email literally at your fingertips. Like with competing units, the navigation buttons are always present on-screen, taking up a little space but always readily available. Video screen quality was adequate, giving a decent picture and handling motion fairly well. The 170 degree viewing angle via the IPS screen was definitely a big plus. Touch responsiveness certainly wasn't that of a unit twice the price. But was competitive with other units in the price range.

After sitting down with the Acer Iconia A1 we definitely think it can hold its own within its category…7-8" tablets at an everyday price point. Sure you won't get the speed and visual impact of a full sized iPad or GalaxyNote. But then again this is a tablet meant for the masses. For those that need a unit on-the-go and have interest in sharing the device with other users take a look at the A1 when it launches in June. It will get you the mobility the masses are seeking in a small tablet at an affordable price.
