Porsche’s Design Tower project solves parking problem with robotic elevator for cars Posted: 23 Nov 2011 07:32 AM PST I think we all know that parking in big cities is a problem that will get progressively worse. If we keep packing people into cities that are less than a square mile, there is only so much space where someone can park their car. As someone who has had problems parking in the big city, there has to be a solution. In the movie I, Robot, a future is presented where cars park in front of a massive building, and a gigantic robotic arm picks up the car to store them away like bees in a hive. This particular Design Tower by Porsche takes that idea, but stores the cars horizontally. Imagine being able to drive up to your multi-level condo, and then put your car on a robotic elevator. You will then be taken both vertically and horizontally to your designated spot, which is very close to your doorstep. By the way, this tech already exists. This picture that you see is not a mock-up of the Porsche Design Tower, but Volkswagen’s Autostadt, a 20-story robotic parking garage in Wolfsberg, Germany. This condo will cost $560 million to build, and have 57 stories. There will be 132 units, and some will have up to four spaces per unit. I would imagine that I would have to be super-rich to live in the four-car one, and I wonder if owning a Porsche is a requirement for being a tenant at this condo. Selk’bag 4G Lite, a human-shaped sleeping bag Posted: 23 Nov 2011 07:15 AM PST You would think that sleeping bag technology has never changed, but for those that don’t like the “mummy bags” you might want to look into the Selk’bag. You might not be able to tell by looking, but the Selk’bag is designed to give you the comfort of a sleeping bag, but you wear it like a one-piece outfit. You might not be able to tell from the picture, but the Selk’bag separates the legs as well as the arms. I suppose what the Snuggie is to blankets, the Selk’bag is to sleeping bags. That is probably the best description that I can give, but the Selk’bag can keep you warmer than a Snuggie. For some reason, I am thinking of all the cold weather uses, but that is because I am in for a long winter. In the summer time, this could be used for camping out underneath the stars. If you are interested in getting a Selk’bag 4G Lite for yourself, head over to the Selk’bag site and get the fourth generation of bodysuit sleeping bags. It comes in gray, violet, and dark blue in sizes of medium and large, and, as you can see from the photo, kids’ sizes. The price is about $99.00. That may sound high to you, but heat can be pretty expensive. It might be worth spending this hundred dollars to save a few hundred dollars during the cold season. Kimtech Touchscreen Cleaning Wipes are true smudge-busters Posted: 23 Nov 2011 07:00 AM PST Now that I have a new Kindle Fire, I also have a new smudge-magnet. I really should have bought some screen protectors, but I couldn’t wait to use it. Fortunately, I got a chance to try out Kimtech’s Touchscreen Cleaning Wipes, and I was able to get rid of all those unsightly fingerprints. With a few wipes, I was able to bring the Kindle Fire’s screen back into its (dare I say it?) virginal state. (Yeah, I said it.) The Kimtech Touchscreen Cleaning Wipes are lint-free and are designed to remove all sorts of residue like grease, dust, and make-up. I can honestly say that I have been using my Kindle Fire for about a week, and I was amazed at how well the Kimtech’s wipes cleaned it up. As for my Droid X, which I have had for about a year, this didn’t clean up as well. However, I will say that the smudges that wouldn’t rub out looked like they were dried on. You should be able to get the KimTech Touchscreen Cleaning Wipes at the official site here. There are available in easy travel packages of ten or twenty. I found one deal on Amazon for a 3 pack of 20 for a price of about $7.37. You might want to get in on that deal if you got any kind of touchscreen device, especially one with a big screen. Posted: 23 Nov 2011 05:30 AM PST Those who travel alone frequently do know how to best pack their belongings – and to travel with a minimal amount of luggage. Well, you can never quite tell when you need to measure the weight of something, hence packing a scale along with you makes good sense. Don’t just bring any scale with you though, as there is the £34.99 Mirja Digital Folding Scales that will certainly make the little geek in you happy. After all, the name itself tells half the story – while it might add 3kg to your overall luggage weight, it will fold up to be smaller compared to a pepper grinder when you do not need it. All you need to do is unfold the satin-finished legs, stash it in a bowl or container on the central disc and turn on the LCD display – and you’re good to go. It doesn’t matter if you do not have any more room in the cupboards to stash this puppy away – just slide it into the accompanying wire cage and hang it somewhere… Cool Gift Idea: Digital Picture Frames, check out our reviews. Posted: 23 Nov 2011 05:00 AM PST There is a report out there that claims Apple’s devices are still the most desirable, never mind the fact that there are more Android-powered smartphones being used by the masses at the moment. I do wonder though – do all the rest of the mid-range Android owners really, really want an iPhone but could not afford one, hence settling for an Android device instead? I would have thought that they would hold out with their current phones first, and make the switch to perhaps the free iPhone 3GS at the moment, never mind that it is behind by a couple of generations. Well, iPhone owners now have a new toy to play with – the £79.99 iKon RC Buggy. This unique device will be able to cruise around the floor at around 10ft per second (that would make it go at around 7mph), where it ought to be able to shrug off some minor knocks and accidents since it is made from aluminum. Not only that, rack and pinion steering as well as high-grip tyres make sure that controls are responsive enough to deliver superb handling. Even when you decide to send the iKon RC Buggy on an uneven ground mission, it will be able to do just fine with an independent wishbone suspension system.
