Check out this R5800 Solar Death Ray, built by 19-year-old Eric Jacqmain

Posted: 31 Jan 2011 04:08 PM PST

What you are seeing here is a “death-ray” made by gluing 5,800 tiny mirror tiles to a fiberglass satellite dish.

According to my Source, it is powerful enough to “melt steel, vaporize aluminum, boil concrete, turn dirt into lava, and obliterate any organic material in an instant”. Believe it or not, it was built by a 19-year-old named Eric Jacqmain who wanted to prove how powerful the sun’s energy is.

Okay, point taken! Unfortunately, Jacqmain’s invention failed because it was destroyed by a shed fire that was started by its own energy. Jacqmain says he want so build a more powerful version with 32,000 mirrors in the future. Will that be more powerful than the sun?

In all honesty, I’m not certain at what point the government should intervene when Death-rays are created. I think I saw an episode of Mythbusters where they were trying to find out whether some ancient mirror weapon could blast ships. As I recall, it was busted. Correct me in a comment if it was Plausible.

Okay, this is one those times where I doubt whether this is true, because this weapon seems too powerful and it is rather convenient how this particular WMD was accidentally destroyed.

Does anyone know whether or not this particular R5800 Death Ray is really true? I’m not saying that it is completely false, but I would like to find out more about it.

RC Tricopter shooting hydrogen-filled balloons is the coolest thing you will see all day

Posted: 31 Jan 2011 03:41 PM PST

What you are seeing here is an excellent justification for putting guns on the Parrot AR.Drone. These two guys put fireworks guns on this mini RC tricopter here.

You absolutely have to watch the video after the jump to see what came next. The fireworks guns are roman candles that are triggered by a bit-switch.

Once these two guys let loose the mini RC tricopter, they targeted some balloons filled with hydrogen. In case you aren’t aware, hydrogen makes balloons float better than helium. You’ll notice that when they are hit with a spark, it creates an explosion better than Star Wars or Die Hard.

You definitely have to see the end of the video to see the tricopter face off with two 100 pack rockets on a tripod. It reminds me of the final showdown between the Enterprise and the Reliant at the end of Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan in its sheer epicness.

Of course, Star Trek II didn’t end with the two major players colliding with each other. That is definitely how this one ends, and comes complete with video game sound effects and captions as well.

Just enjoy the video here, as it will be the best thing you will see all day, guaranteed.

Black Pyramids could harness solar energy in the UAE

Posted: 31 Jan 2011 03:07 PM PST

Did you ever wonder why the Egyptians built the pyramids? It wasn’t because the desert was too boring, but they were tombs for the pharaohs.

In the case of this particular concept design known as Lunar Cubit, these pyramids could be built for the purposes of solar energy.

Lunar Cubit is the winning entry in Land Art Generator Initative, a contest in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) made for designing green energy installations that look really nice.

For some reason, I don’t have any information from my source about how this pyramid collects solar energy. However, I have heard that the deep black panels on the pyramid can give out enough power for 250 homes.

In fact, much of what my Source says deals with lunar energy. Apparently, this Lunar Cubit pyramid light up in various patterns to indicate the phases of the moon. I’m not certain why this is, but if we can ever harness the power of the moon, that would be good.

I don’t know if these pyramids will ever be built, but considering all the stuff in Dubai that has been built, I don’t see why not. Personally, I think that this is the best use of pyramids since the glass one at the Louvre.

Neuro Fuzzy Rice Cooker

Posted: 31 Jan 2011 10:04 AM PST

Back in the days where there was no such thing as a rice cooker, you had to figure it out through experience. How much water do you put inside so that the rice doesn’t end up as porridge? Just how long should you cook the rice under a stove, and when do you turn off the fire? All of those survival skills are more or less lost because of the advent of the dummy-proof rice cooker.

Enter the Neuro Fuzzy Rice Cooker from ThinkGeek – this rice cooker thinks for itself, where it will make the relevant adjustments to temperature and cooking time, letting you churn out tastebud perfect white rice, brown rice, sushi and even oatmeal. Of course, the $199.99 asking price might be too much for what you’re looking for, but when you take into consideration what it is capable of, it might just be worth every single penny.

Capable of cooking up to 5.5 cups of rice at any one go, geeks will definitely love its extra large colored LCD display alongside an easy-to-use navigation control panel. All purchases will come with a rice measuring cup, rinse-free rice measuring cup, nonstick rice spatula, and spatula holder.

So we’ve looked at Darth Vader drop some serious beats yesterday, and here is Boba Fett who intends to have his own 15 minutes of fame with the Star Wars Boba Fett Headphones. Currently available for pre-order, it is tipped to ship from February 2nd onwards (which isn’t too far away – just 2 days, to be exact) for a highly affordable £34.99. For any serious Star Wars fan, that can be considered to be a bargain.

Wearing this will help you capture the look of the Galaxy's favorite bounty hunter, where it will sport an adjustable strap which is capable of fitting most head sizes, while a 1.2 meter coiled cord should be adequate for most listeners. This is an officially licensed product that would definitely have serious collectors sit up and take notice, although we’re sure you can get comparable performance from cheaper non-branded headphones.

Pentel airpenPocket digital pen

Posted: 31 Jan 2011 09:43 AM PST

Pentel has something extremely interesting up their sleeves this time around, where what they are offering is definitely different from what you would expect. Instead of the business-as-usual stationery, along ambles the airpenPocket digital pen. Yup, by its name alone, you can tell that this is definitely something more than special.

Just what the heck is the airpenPocket, you ask? For the uninitiated, this is actually a digital pen which is capable of wirelessly transmitting characters as well as images it draws on paper to a computer. To know what kind of technological wizardry lies behind this writing instrument (or rather, inside its chassis), you might as well hit the rest of the post.

For starters, the airpenPocket comprises of a specially designed digital pen and a memory unit, where it will feature Bluetooth connectivity as well as the ability to receive and send data. Whenever you use the pen to take down a note, it will automatically record whatever was written in the memory unit thanks to Pentel’s original method (ultrasound infrared). All relevant data will then be transferred over to a computer through Bluetooth.

This wireless setup is a dream for most folks, but like most other good things, they do come from humble beginnings. The airpenPocket’s predecessor relies on a USB cable for data transmission between its memory unit and a PC, so fitting the successor with Bluetooth connectivity is a no-brainer. Pentel hopes that the wireless capability of the airpenPocket will expand further the use of the pen with mobile devices.

Pentel hopes to have the pen play nice with smartphones and tablet devices that have Bluetooth support as well, and intends to roll out applications for Android-based devices from early March this year onwards. All saved data will end up on the server of Evernote Corp’s “Evernote” crowd service with but a click. This means the combination of an airpenPocket and a smartphone will make it possible to save a handwritten memo using Evernote’s service even if you are not at home, how now about that?

Just make sure the airpenPocket has enough juice left before writing down a really, really long thesis lest the dog eats your homework and you have no softcopy backup.
