Microsoft’s Flight Simulator is going to be free

Posted: 06 Jan 2012 06:30 AM PST

It seems like a lot of MMO games are now free to play now, and it looks like Microsoft is making one of their classic games free with Flight Simulator.

It will become available this Spring, and the name of it has been curtailed to simply “Flight”. I’m not certain what requirements your computer will have in order to play it, but I really hope that it is capable of the rich detail that more recent Flight Simulator games have given us.

In fact, I still remember when I first played Flight Simulator back in the mid-eighties. It was one of the first PC games that I ever played, and the graphics looked about as good as the Atari 2600. It had an instruction booklet that was over 100 pages long, and the controls were not very instinctual. Still, Flight Simulator really changed the world of PC simulation gaming as we know it, and I’m sure that it has been a cash cow for Microsoft for many years.

By the way, those who are connected with a free Games for Windows Live account will be able to have additional content which includes planes, missions, and more. You can also get in-line purchases such as aircraft, regions, as well as customization options .

Well, I look forward to many “Flights” of fancy, as this game could be my next distraction for the spring.

8MM is back without the film or the app!

Posted: 06 Jan 2012 06:15 AM PST

Some of you might remember 8mm film, or at least remember the film 8mm with Nicholas Cage. Thanks to the Fuuvi, makers of the USB Mini Digital Camera, 8mm is back.

In case you are wondering, the Fuuvi Bee apparatus that you see in the picture has no 8mm film in it, and it doesn’t house an iPhone or other type of smartphone. All the film is done digitally, and it has a pretty wimpy resolution of 640 x 480.

You can see what a video looks like after the jump. It also does stills at 1280 x 960, and it is noticeably smaller than an 8mm camera. There is also no sound of 8mm motors working.

I really do like the retro look of the 8mm film. It reminds me of certain scenes from Oliver Stone films. Perhaps we have lost a little something with digital film and I think that 8mm will always has artistic merit, unless it is in a film with Nicholas Cage. But hey, I see no reason to rip on Nicholas Cage, as Saturday Night Live does a good job of that.

The Fuuvi Bee is good for about 100 minutes on a full charge, but my Source does not have a price.

Genius Ring Presenter for your PowerPoint Presentations

Posted: 06 Jan 2012 06:00 AM PST

Some of you may have used those Air Mice in order to do a PowerPoint presentation, and this is another way to control your slides in a less discreet way.

The Genius Ring Presenter allows the user access to Play/Exit and Last/Next Page on the PowerPoint Presentation. This allows for controlling the cursor movement, and for dragging as well as 4-way scrolling. The Ring Presenter also controls the same buttons that your mouse has, including the left, middle, and right buttons.

To make the Genius Ring Presenter even better, it has a laser pointer on it. Yes, with a little bit of smoke, you can make yourself look like a Green Lantern. This is assuming the laser pointer light is green.

Of course, you might look a little bit ridiculous with this big thing on your finger, and the people watching your presentation might be distracted by the flat Ring-pop on your hand. I think I would have to see it on my finger to see what it would look like.

The Genius Ring Presenter uses Bluetooth technology with a USB dongle to connect to the PC. Hopefully, it will make you look like a genius, and the price is about $60.

Samsung M370 arrives at Sprint

Posted: 06 Jan 2012 05:30 AM PST

Most of us are so caught up with smartphones as well as the kind of entertainment it delivers to the table, that we tend to forget that there is still a segment of folks out there who cannot afford phones that cost a few hundred dollars, leaving them with choices that are narrowed down to regular feature phones. Well, having a feature phone is not all that bad, really, considering how handsets from this particular group tend to be a whole lot hardier than a smartphone. Ever owned a Nokia 3310? Yeah, that candybar handset was the bomb when it came to durability of a normal phone, barring those rugged handsets from the likes of Sonim. Well, Sprint has another standard feature phone for the masses, where it is known as the Samsung M370.

Specially designed for practical customers who want to use the phone just to make and receive phone calls, snap photos once in a while, and send and receive text messages, the clamshell Samsung M370 does seem to be the perfect purchase. After all, it does come with decent enough looks, and will even sport Bluetooth connectivity for hands-free conversations. Of course, if you do not own a Bluetooth headset, all is not lost, since the M370 will also sport a built-in speakerphone. Nice to know that threaded text messaging is included with the M370, as it makes keeping track of your text messages with a particular person a whole lot easier, without having to go through an extremely long list of scrolling down to get an idea of where the conversation left off.

Apart from that, built-in productivity tools comprise of a calculator, calendar and task list. There is also a customizable photo caller ID, while speaker-independent voice dialing also helps out when you are too occupied with both of your hands. There is also a built-in parental control setting that will restrict incoming and/or outgoing direct dial calls as well as limit access to data services. If you have concerns about getting lost, Sprint Family Locator works great by relying on GPS technology to locate your child's phone and display the location on an interactive map. To top it all off, there is a 3.5mm universal jack which works great with majority of earphones out there, a 1.3-megapixel camera, 128MB RAM, 256MB ROM, and 2MB of internal storage space. The display is a 2.4″ LCD QVGA resolution screen, while the battery measures at 1000mAh. You can only pick it up in one color – Pewter Gray.

LG Google TV to debut at CES 2012

Posted: 06 Jan 2012 05:00 AM PST

CES 2012 will offer a smorgasbord of gizmos and gadgets that are sure to drive geeks and curious onlookers alike wild, and we will have coverage on the ground thanks to Mark. With so many gadgets to discover in just four days, it would require a well planned journey to make sure that all the major points have been covered, barring the free beer and food that are served at Showstoppers and the Digital Experience. LG has announced that CES 2012 will be the platform where they roll out the LG Smart TV with Google TV, merging the familiarity of Google's Android OS with the convenience and comfort of LG's 3D and Smart TV technologies so that you are able to enjoy a whole new and attractive home entertainment option.

Havis Kwon, President and CEO of LG Electronics Home Entertainment Company, has this to say, "LG has constantly strived to provide consumers with wider choices in home entertainment that bring the highest level of sophistication and convenience. Through Google TV, LG has merged Google's established Android operating system with LG's proven 3D and Smart TV technologies, offering consumers a new and enthralling TV experience."

One of the strongest suits for LG's Google TV would be its ease of use, which is made possible courtesy of the combination of its Android-based user interface alongside and the Magic Remote QWERTY that was designed by LG. LG's Google TV's user interface as well as its main screen have been designed to ensure one can enjoy convenient browsing and content selection. Love to multi-task? That is not a problem, since it will also run alongside search, social networking and TV functions simultaneously. You can access the user interface through the Magic Remote QWERTY that merges the user-friendly benefits of LG's Magic Remote with a QWERTY keyboard.

Not only that, LG’s own CINEMA 3D technology will also help Google TV deliver a home entertainment experience which is immersive, comfortable and convenient, right smack in the middle of your living room. All you need is a robot that serves you beer at your beck and call, and the ability to have it make sandwiches would also work in your favor. No idea on how much the LG Google TV would cost, but do expect to drop some serious coin if you are an early adopter.

Obama Farting Doll

Posted: 06 Jan 2012 04:30 AM PST

There is one great thing about the US – you can more or less poke fun at the President, whom many tout to be the most powerful man in the world, without getting hauled to court. Such freedoms are definitely not possible at all in countries like North Korea, and with a capitalist mindset here Stateside, why not make light of your leader and earn some money on the side at the same time? This is what the $19.95 Obama Farting Doll is all about, and unlike some of his policies, no hot air can be detected here.

The Pootin’ Tootin’ President Obama Doll is certain to win votes for folks who want something really funny – all you need to do is press the Commander and Chief’s finger, and your ears will soon be greeted with a fart, followed by one out of 21 different, hilarious remarks which will be spewed out randomly. Measuring 9″ in height, each purchase will already come with batteries so you can get started right out of the box. Scary how the very same finger might actually be used to launch a nuclear missile when all peace talks have broken down.
