Sony Ericsson Zylo with Walkman cellphone

Posted: 20 Apr 2010 06:21 PM PDT

Sony Ericsson is back with a bang, this time round they have expanded their Walkman line of cellphones (guess the Cybershot fans will have to take a back seat for this time), where the Zylo is the latest model to be introduced. This next generation Walkman phone will not break the bank if you are interested in picking one up, where it not only offers the best musical experience from a Walkman handset, but will also merge both music with social networking in a single device. That’s right, you will be able to catch up with family and friends over Twitter and Facebook among others using but a few button presses, while enjoying your favorite tunes in the background. Apart from that, the Zylo will also sport the TrackID feature which lets you access the name and artist of a track which you currently hear.

The Sony Ericsson Zylo will sport the human curvature design which is not consistent across the whole Sony Ericsson portfolio. Beautiful and timeless, it also comes with an ergonomic keypad that makes using the handset a joy. Apart from that, the Sony Ericsson Zylo with Walkman will also come preloaded with sounds to spice things up when you’re on an undercover mission – after all, you can pretend that you are still at work, walking on the street or in a restaurant when talking to your other half, although we wouldn’t recommend you build a relationship based on mistrust.

Interestingly enough, the FLAC format will make a debut on this handset, letting consumers experience superb lossless quality sound, but it will definitely take up much more storage space than a regular MP3 file. With PlayNow support, you can shop round the clock in a virtual music store, as long as your budget permits. Other features include connectivity to Flickr and Picasa as well as the ability to upload video clips to YouTube straight away with but a couple of clicks. The Sony Ericsson Zylo with Walkman supports UMTS HSPA 900/2100 and GSM GPRS/EDGE 850/900/1800/1900, UMTS HSPA 850/900/1800/1900 and GSM GPRS/EDGE 850/900/1800/1900 networks, where it will hit the market this Q3 with Jazz Black, Chacha Silver and Swing Pink colors to choose from.

Want to relive the past in the present with a device from the future? The Automatic Bucket Ice Cream Churn might just fit the bill, as this classic wooden bucket churn design that hails from the 19th century is capable of producing lovely, delicious and creamy ice cream without the need for tedious hand cranking. The paddle will make short work of cookies, fruit, or chocolate chips while making sure they are all well integrated into the mixture. As for its solid fir bucket, it is capable of holding ice and rock salt to keep the canister at the optimal 10ยบ F temperature when churning ice cream. Interested? The Automatic Bucket Ice Cream Churn is going for $69.95 a pop.

E-ink concept could change the face of newspapers

Posted: 20 Apr 2010 03:47 PM PDT

I think we all know that newspapers are dying. However, it may be something that will always be around in some form, like radio.

This is a concept newspaper that uses E-ink with a semi-transparent surface. Basically, it is creates a display on a surface that looks just like a newspaper, but won’t leave any black ink residue on your hands.

There is a video after the break if you want to see it for yourself. It uses a fingerprint identifier to see who the user is, and then it looks like you are surfing the web.

I believe that this is what Apple wanted to do with the iPad, but bigger. Considering that the iPad already does what the iPhone can do, but bigger, maybe this will be the iPaper. iPaper. I like that, and it could easily catch on.

However, I’m not certain whether people will open up to a huge folding display that is actually larger than most mobile devices. After all, newspapers are very large and bulky, and they take up way to much tabletop space. We might be at the point where people prefer to have something on a smaller screen rather than a larger one.

Still, I guess I like any technology that looks like it is out of Minority Report, and showed up a few times in that film.

Car Power Charger Adapter

Posted: 20 Apr 2010 03:23 PM PDT

If you were ever wondering just how to overload your car’s cigarette lighter, this would do it.  This extension cord will allow for you to plug in all sorts of things inside of your car.  It’s the perfect addition for anyone that finds themselves living out of their car on a very regular basis.  It even has a tiny little fan thrown in, you know, just in case.

It has 3 different plugs and in addition to that a single USB port.  I’m not sure what I would do with that many outlets, but it’s great for the overachieving gadget addict.  The whole strip has an on off switch, so you don’t have to unplug it to cut the power to all of your gadgets.  In order to get your own it’ll cost you $31. 69 through UXSight.

Robot Report: Getting more human all the time

Posted: 20 Apr 2010 03:23 PM PDT

The last time we talked about Robovie, we mentioned that he looked like he was ready to take over all of us fleshy humans.

It would appear that Robovie-R, a robot that is designed to assist the elderly, has been upgraded to Version 3 which now stands 120 cm tall and weighs 43 kg.

You can see a video of it after the jump. If you really want to be freaked out, I highly suggest watching the video of this freaky mouth that is able to do vowel sounds with its robo-lips.

Sorry I don’t have more information about the mouth robot, here is some more specs about the Robovie. It has eleven touch sensors, two USB cameras (one for each eye), two mono mics (one for each ear) 17 joints, a speaker in the mouth, networking capability, and can travel 2.5 km per hour.

I think it is proof that robots are getting more human all the time. In fact, let’s combine the mouth with the body of the Robovie. Or maybe we should just stick with the speaker on the mouth, as the robo-mouth just freaks me out.

Sorry if I can’t get over that mouth-bot. It just looks like something from The City of Lost Children or something. However, that Robovie could assist the elderly, and that’s good, right? I’m trying to dispel my robot fears.

T-OLED makes transparent glass a display

Posted: 20 Apr 2010 02:47 PM PDT

I think we all know that we are heading for an era where every pane of glass will be a display of some type. I mean, if there is one thing science fiction has taught us: no glass shall go to waste on something as mundane as a window.

It would appear that some Korean technology could make this a reality with transparent OLED or T-OLED. The purpose is to make a touch-sensitive transcreen.

I believe the intention is to make something that would be put on a windshield. I’ve heard that Microsoft has been working on that one.

For some reason, I always see this technology applied to automobile windshields. It’s like we can’t tolerate dashboard instrumentation anymore, or something. Yeah, I suppose we just got to have heads-up displays.

Most of these displays have involved some sort of tiny projector, which has been the only way you could get images on glass. I don’t see how the image on the device in the photo, but all those circuit boards below might be an indicator.

Personally, I want to see this on every window, mirror, or any other place where there is glass of any type. Of course, call me a dreamer. Of course, OLED technology is very expensive. Have you seen the price of OLED TVs these days?

GPS Built Into Your Visor

Posted: 20 Apr 2010 02:28 PM PDT

I don’t know how many times I have been completely and utterly stressed out, because I was driving in a city I’m unfamiliar with.  Only to start swearing profusely when the suction cup for my GPS manages to fall off of my windshield and scare the absolute life out of me.  I think I’m suction cup challenged.  There should be a support group for that.  That or someone could create this concept design and save me from absolutely snapping in the middle of a 6 o’clock traffic jam.

Truthfully my VW Bug’s visor probably isn’t even remotely large enough to hide a GPS unit, but a girl can dream.  Sure, this wouldn’t be a preferable design for some, since it may feel as if it’s blocking your line of sight.  Then again, that very distinctly depends on the size of your car’s windshield and visor.  Of course this isn’t something that’s going to be sold anytime soon, but the suction cup challenged can always pray to the gadget gods that it will become a reality at some point.

Doctor Who Sonic Screwdriver

Posted: 20 Apr 2010 01:40 PM PDT

Despite how old the Doctor Who series is, there is never a limit of adoring fans.  They all have their different preferences as to which Dr Who was the best, but the fans are an undying breed.  For those that have not forgotten their favorite sci-fi series, now you can pick up a Doctor Who Sonic Screwdriver of the 11th Doctor.  Sure, you probably won’t be using it to save the world, but it’ll give you something awesome to show off to your buddies.

This exact replica of the Gallifreyan even has special sound effects.  Just press the button on the side and it’ll activate those LED lights and sound effects.  The whole thing is about 9 inches long and requires 3 of the L1154 batteries.  To get your own collector’s item, it’ll cost you $25.99 from Think Geek.

Powerski Jetboard

Posted: 19 Apr 2010 06:48 PM PDT

The person in the picture to my left is not water-skiing. That cord he is holding onto is not attached to any boat, but is the controller for the motorized surfboard that he is standing on.

That’s right, someone went and put a motor on a surfboard, and made it work. This is the PowerSki Jetboard, part surfboard, part jetski, all fun.

I have included a video of this after the jump so you can see it in action, and you should know that it has a 45 horsepower motor to go forty miles per hour on the water.

So, I suppose that what we are seeing is a surfboard “that doesn’t require a wave to catch”. However, if you have waves, they make some interesting watery jumps.

I wonder how long it would take the average user to get the hang of this thing? It looks like you’ve really got to keep your balance, and I’m assuming that handlebar helps with that. That corded thing looks like some sort of speed or throttle control.

Well, considering that it is going to be summer in the States here soon, that means the surfers are going to be hitting the beach like lemmings. It would be nice if they had a PowerSki Jetboard.

Unfortunately, my source doesn’t seem to have any price on this guy, or availability date.
