UMSkinCheck – Encouraging you to Take Naked Pictures of Yourself! Posted: 11 Jul 2012 09:07 AM PDT Having at one time been a professional sun-tanner, I have endured the indignity of having full body screenings to check for skin cancer. Having grown up a bit from my deep tropical tanning days, I am now careful to use sunscreen and to watch myself for any changes that could develop into something scary. It made me think that some folks might be too embarrassed to go to the doctor… how do you get around that? Well, a new, totally free app called UMSkinCheck (developed at the University of Michigan Health System) allows users to create photographic baselines of their very own skin by taking pictures of suspicious moles and things, and then having the app lead them through a very private skin self-exam and, if you’re not sure what your skin cancer risk may be, the app even includes a risk calculator, that utilizes your specific input in order to determine your individual risk profile. The app also sends us automatic reminders so we can remember to monitor any changes to our skin and it provides pictures of the various types of dreaded skin cancers so we can have a better idea of what we may be dealing with and if a mole appears to be changing or growing, the photos can then be shared with a dermatologist to help determine whether or not a biopsy is necessary. With more than 2 million Americans being diagnosed with skin cancer every year, regular skin checks can be a tremendous aid in helping people discover it in its earliest stages. The app is free and is designed for both the iPhone and the iPad and is available to download on iTunes. Yes, I know there’s no substitute for good medical care, but if this encourages someone to check themselves that normally wouldn’t have, thats still a very good thing in my book, but please, don’t post the pictures on Facebook… I find I’m just not that open-minded anymore. Yves Rossy’s Wingpack – For the Love of Flying Posted: 11 Jul 2012 08:12 AM PDT Last night I had a dream that I was flying, when I woke up I realized that since the beginning of time man has wanted to be able to experience the joy of singular flight, to be able to soar like a bird on wings of their own. For me, I think it was just the banana split I ate before bed, but it made me look up gadgets that could let you fly anyway… Check out Yves Rossy’s Jet Powered Wing, having always wanted to fly in the most natural way possible this Swiss ex-military pilot has devoted most of his time to developing, and perfecting his ability to fly like a bird with ridged carbon fiber jet wings that span about 8 feet, and are powered by 4 small but powerful jet engines underneath. The 200 pound Wingpack is said to be incredibly responsive and requires careful control of all body movements during flight, the apparatus has been used to fly across theSwiss Alps, and the English Channel in a spectacular flight that was broadcast live to over 160 countries. Since then, recent wing changes to the Wingpack have allowed more precision flying, leading to recent acrobatic flight demonstrations and even formation flights. The Jetman has been saved by his parachute before, but that doesn’t seem to slow him down, having spent close to 200 thousand dollars on the original prototype and many different versions already developed, Yves “Jetman” Rossy seems dedicated to perfecting his “craft” and was last seen in a flight across Rio De Janeiro’s famous skyline, even circling the famous Christ the Redeemer statue. Check out the website at Jetman.com. Does anyone think that someday, we may all have one of these in our garage?

Motorola Atrix HD arrives on AT&T Posted: 11 Jul 2012 05:00 AM PDT When it comes to the world of smartphones, right now the market can be said to be fragmented into three different groups – the Windows Phone platform is one of them, occupying a minority spot, while the other two would be the Android operating system from Google as well as iOS from Apple. AT&T's latest offering, the Motorola Atrix HD, is clearly part of the Android camp, where from this Sunday onwards, it will be made available in all AT&T channels for $99.99 a pop. Do not be charmed by the relatively low price point at first glance, as it would mean you will have to agree with a new two-year agreement. Still, that would be better than purchasing a phone outright as an unlocked model, since you would have to get a data and voice line for the phone anyways. Not only that, if you are already a regular of AT&T for so many years, why not continue the trend and stick to the Motorola Atrix HD for a couple more years? Let us take a closer look at what the Motorola Atrix HD is able to offer underneath the hood in the extended post, shall we? It goes without saying that the Motorola Atrix HD is the latest addition to Motorola's Atrix family, where it measures an incredibly thin 8.4mm, but do not think that this is fragile at any time. After all, this puppy is made out of Kevlar, the same kind of material used for bullet proof vests, making it incredibly stable in any situation. Apart from that, the Motorola Atrix HD will also feature a high-tech, invisible nano-coating that doubles up as a splash guard for the outer shell as well as for the electrical circuit boards within. Owners of the Motorola Atrix HD might find the smartphone to be worth their while thanks to the pre-loaded SMARTACTIONS, which is a free app from Motorola which actually suggests ways to automatically change your phone's settings throughout the day in order to let you fall into a comfortable routine. For instance, should you place the Motorola ATRIX HD in the Vehicle Navigation Dock accessory and enable Drive Smart, it will automatically send the handset into vehicle mode, reading out any of your text messages, in addition to sending auto-replies to incoming calls and texts while delivering turn-by-turn navigation. Other hardware specifications include a vibrant 4.5-inch HD ColorBoost display, an 8-megapixel rear-facing camera with 1080p HD video recording capabilities, and a front-facing 720p HD camera. This will be an Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich powered device, so you need not fret about not having the latest operating system version, that's for sure.
