LUMIX DMC-G3 – Big Camera in a Small Package

Posted: 12 May 2011 05:20 PM PDT

I consider myself a pretty serious amateur photographer, I love the hobby and have taken some very professional looking shots if I do say so myself. What I don't enjoy is lugging around my huge camera and hefty lens, just for a trip to the beach, but I don't want to miss out on any potentially amazing photo opportunities…

Well, Panasonic just announced a brand new addition to the LUMIX G Series of Compact Cameras, the LUMIX DMC-G3, this is the smallest and lightest digital interchangeable lens camera with a viewfinder that they've ever made. This new camera offers a much lighter and smaller camera than your more traditional DSLR allowing for much greater portability and more creative control.

The G3 also features a new 16.0-megapixel sensor that produces rich, true-to-life, high quality images, plus 1920 x 1080 full-High Definition (HD) video recording capability with stereo sound in AVCHD. The Panasonic LUMIX G3 is the ideal hybrid, offering superb still and video capabilities with many easy-to-use features so users at any level can create professional-quality images.

The LUMIX G3 offers photographers the opportunity to express their creativity with cool pre-sets like Creative Control mode, which allows for images to be taken with popular visual effects like Retro, High Key, Sepia and High Dynamic.  The conventional film mode has also evolved with a new effect control, Photo Style, which has Standard, Vivid, Natural, Monochrome, Scenery, Portrait settings that allow finer adjustment of contrast, sharpness, saturation and noise reduction.

The Panasonic LUMIX DMC-G3 is made of aluminum and will be available in a variety of attractive colors, including black, red, white and brown, starting in June 2011. Suggested retail price of the LUMIX G3 WITH the 14-42mm Zoom Lens Kit will be around $699.99.

Fujitsu hybrid notebook/tablet folds into fourths

Posted: 12 May 2011 01:08 PM PDT

I have always envisioned a world where there is a portable device that works like a laptop, but has the portability of a cell phone.

I believe I have shared my story of how I tried to report from CES 2011 on my Droid X. The smartphone is just too small a device, but I don’t like lugging around a laptop or notebook.

Fujitsu might just have the solution to this dilemma with this hybrid notebook/tablet that can fold into quarters. Somehow it works without a hinge, and it has a laser-projected keyboard.

So are we looking at a future where people can just whip out their cellular phones and then unfold them into laptops or tablet PCs? All I can say to that is: Please.

In fact, could someone just make this, right flipping now? I mean, I really can’t stand lugging around my laptop when I am at conferences. I would just love to have all the practicality of a laptop in the size of a cellular phone. I just can’t have that, even with my Android phone.

Hey, Fujitsu, I personally think that you got something here. You had better hurry up and perfect this. Give consumers what they want! How about it, consumers? Is this what you want?

MtEverClimb is an endless rope-climbing exercise

Posted: 12 May 2011 12:00 PM PDT

Ah, climbing the rope, doesn’t that just bring back memories of gym class? I remember that I just couldn’t climb that thing for a while, but I finally mastered it. Fortunately, I learned how to do it before I got to high school, not that we had a rope in high school.

I would imagine if, as an adult, I climbed a rope every day, I would probably be in better shape than I am today. I suppose that this is why MtEverClimb was invented.

The MtEverClimb is not a mountain, but it is the next best thing. It is a 485 pound steel frame with a pulley wheel so that the user can climb up a rope as long as he or she wants. I would imagine that you could set it so your own weight wouldn’t weigh it down too much. I mean, it would suck if you started climbing, and it just started sinking before you could ever get to the top. Then again, this is the idea, you have to stay ahead of it.

Perhaps there is a way to “freeze” the rope in one place, so you can dangle on it upside-down.

Apparently, this apparatus is endorsed by NFL’s Pittsburgh Steelers. However, it costs about $7,985, and apparently the user has to pay $495 for an optional up and down timer.

Jetman soars over the Grand Canyon

Posted: 12 May 2011 11:30 AM PDT

Some of you might remember our old friend Yves Rossy. This man, who is also known as “Jetman” has used this personal rocket pack to fly across the English channel, is now handling some Evel Knievel territory with the Grand Canyon. There is a video after the jump if you want to check it out for yourself.

Actually, Evel Knievel did the Snake River Canyon, as he couldn’t get permission from the government to do the Grand Canyon. I don’t know whether Jetman got permission, but he got into a helicopter and hovered 8,000 feet above the canyon’s floor and leaped out. He then started up his four-motor jetpack and flew for about 200 feet above the canyon ridge at about 190 miles per hour for eight minutes before opening a parachute.

Apparently, Jetman did this one day later than originally planned, away from the media spotlight. However, there were onlookers, and I would assume that this is how we can post about it in the first place.

Man, that Jetman is just living the dream, isn’t he? I wonder if he did a loop like that one time. So, if you had the rocket pack, would you be willing to take a flight? Leave a comment for your answer.

Packable Spotting Scope

Posted: 12 May 2011 08:44 AM PDT

Having read the exploits of the highly secretive Navy SEAL Team 6 (who do not exist officially, and yet everyone has heard about them – how ironic is that?), you might want to go on a little spying adventure of your own, and you would need state of the art devices apart from stealthy gizmos and gear to aid your cause. How about the Packable Spotting Scope?

The name of the scope itself is self explanatory, where it retracts to only 8″ long, tipping the scales at less than 2 lbs. for easier portability. The retracted scope will be 50% smaller compared to traditional models. The 52mm objective lens has been fully coated so that it delivers better light transmission and visual clarity in limited or abundant ambient light, while its lens adjusts from 15X to 45X magnification and focuses on objects without blurring.

The asking price? A rather pocket friendly $129.95, so there shouldn’t be any objections there from the missus.

DTV Shredder gets your adrenaline pumping

Posted: 12 May 2011 08:37 AM PDT

If you are all decked out in your Master Chief gear, then you would surely love to get up and about in the DTV Shredder that you see here. Currently available for pre-order, it will cost you a whopping £3,500 which could be used to purchase a second hand vehicle, but then again would it have an equal cool factor attached to it?

The DTV Shredder intends to “eat up” rough terrain in a jiffy, but do make sure you wear the proper protective clothing before you start ambling about and around in this. This is somewhat a hybrid of skateboard, motocross bike and panzer tank in a single mode of transportation, making it the next generation of all-terrain vehicle.

Having picked up the attention of the US military, this rugged one-person vehicle will push the competition into the long grass where handling tough terrain is concerned. The rider will stand sideways on the Shredder, where he/she will be propelled by a couple of enormous caterpillar tracks.

Panasonic Lumix DMC-FH7 compact digital camera

Posted: 12 May 2011 08:25 AM PDT

Panasonic has further expanded their Lumix family of compact digital cameras with their latest release, the Lumix DMC-FH7. Of course, compact digital cameras are pretty much on par with one another these days where its specifications are concerned, so how else is Panasonic going to differentiate their product from the others in the market? Well, for starters, the DMC-FH7 will be a 16.1-megapixel shooter that sports intuitive touch-controls.

Being stylish on the outside, that does not mean it is a slouch underneath the hood. For instance, it sports a retractable high-quality 28mm wide-angle LEICA DC lens that has an impressive 4x optical zoom to go along with it, not to mention High Definition video capabilities which will record in 1280 x 720p at a smooth 24 fps for clear and vivid images.

Other hardware specifications of the Lumix DMC-FH7 include a 3″ Smart Touch Screen that lets one gain access to Touch Auto Focus (AF), Touch Zoom, Touch Shutter and Intelligent Scene Selector through the simple touching of the screen. This translates to the entire menu setting options being made available via touch control. When you access playback mode, you are able to drag the image across the screen with your finger in order to browse the photo collection in its glory, as though it was a page in an actual book.

There are three other modes to help you access your creative juices, where they comprise of Beauty Retouch (allows users to retouch faces), Esthetic (creates effects on faces such as clearing skin texture and whitening teeth) and Makeup (gives color options such as foundation, eye-shadow or coloring for the lips and cheeks).

The Panasonic Lumix DMC-FH7 will rely on Panasonic’s Venus Engine VI image processor inside that is capable of helping you shoot really stunning images, with its powerful Intelligent Resolution technology that targets a trio of areas – outlines, detailed texture areas and soft gradation. There is 84MB of internal memory just in case you run out of space on your external memory card. No idea on when this black colored camera will ship nor how much it will cost though, so stay tuned.

Bang & Olufsen BeoVision 4 plasma 3D TV

Posted: 12 May 2011 08:16 AM PDT

Bang & Olufsen joins the 3D TV revolution with their latest release, the BeoVision 4 that sports 85″ of viewing goodness. Yes, you read that right – a whopping 85″ for your eyes to crawl all over the place, drinking in all the detail that you would care to. Touted to be revolutionary as it delivers what some might claim to be the best picture experience of any plasma screen on the market, you can expect your eyes to enjoy Full HD images, razor sharp details, rich-lifelike colors and smooth movement of objects.

Not only that, the BeoVision 4 will also ship with a patented Bang & Olufsen Automatic Color Management technology that is capable of countering the effects of age, making sure it will deliver exceptional picture quality at a high level of performance year after year.

Features of the BeoVision 4 include a dedicated center loudspeaker known as the BeoLab 10, where it will rely on the patented Bang & Olufsen Acoustic Lens Technology, that is capable of dispersing sound at a 180 degree angle throughout the whole area. This would mean your ears are subjected to an unmatched sound experience which will accompany the high quality picture performance.

BeoLab 10 will spread the sound equally and horizontally from the center channel, where this will enable viewers to receive all the nuances from the film dialogue, never mind where they are seated in the room at that time.

Not noly that, this 85″ member of the BeoVision 4 family will also come with a special stand that elevates the display at the touch of a button. Whenever the TV is turned on, the display will elevate itself to the correct viewing position (that depends on where you set it, of course), followed by the seamlessly integrated BeoLab 10 center loudspeaker.

No idea on pricing, but we do know that the BeoVision 4 will arrive as a screen-only solution at a lower price point, while a 103″ version is also up for purchase later this summer at a yet undisclosed price. That means you still have time to save up, no?
