Bike rack puts bicycles up high

Posted: 12 Apr 2011 04:30 PM PDT

I’ve noticed that in America, most of the bike racks are almost empty. However, in certain places in Asia, bicycles are the primary form of transportation, and the racks might not be enough.

This is why I don’t like going to the big city, as you can never find a parking space. This is why MANIFESTO Architecture P.C. has designed this vertical hanger.

It could be used in places like Seoul, Korea, where space is pretty limited. This system of parking bikes uses the “nowhere to go but up” philosophy.

The racks are put on a system that looks like a Ferris Wheel, but it is not controlled by a motor. It is appropriately pedal-powered. I’m not certain if the bikers will have to do this, or whether there will be some elevator operator type of guy who will have to be stationed there.

I can definitely see an added benefit for storing bikes this way. Not only will it save space, but it will prevent theft. Who is going to steal a bike that is two stories up? Unless you are Spider-man, no one will be able to steal it.

Personally, I think this is a good idea, and someone should really implement it.

Would someone manufacture the Tron Light Cycle Board Game

Posted: 12 Apr 2011 04:01 PM PDT

What you see in the photo is a Tron Light Cycle board game, but it is not for sale.

It is a DIY project from Brett King. Apparently, his kids loved the movie Tron Legacy so much, and he loves his kids so much, that he made this for them. Hopefully, you understood that, and you should check out a video of it after the jump.

This little home project has been getting a lot of attention on the web, and can you blame it? I mean, who wouldn’t want a board game version of the light cycle battle with a backlighting and multi-levels.

In fact, how hard would it be just make this thing? Oh man, I’ll bet Disney is just kicking themselves for not thinking of this themselves.

I’m not certain how this game could be played. I mean, do you roll a dice to see how far your bike can go, and then try and surround your opponent? Yeah, that’s the usual procedure for Tron games. I’m not certain what the other vehicles are doing here, but I’m certain there are rules for those. I’m not certain how to do the jumps on these things. There must be some curved wall pieces for that.

Disney, you should contact this guy, and get the board game out before Tron III is made.

DARPA augmented reality goggles

Posted: 12 Apr 2011 03:34 PM PDT

For some reason, whenever I hear DARPA, I always associate it with some nifty technology that may or may not exist.

DARPA is now working on some holographic augmented reality goggles for soldiers. It is apparently designed for those who need constant air support. Apparently, if soldiers need to get that, they have to go through all sorts of radio links, and then some sort of bureaucratic nightmare until it actually comes.

Imagine if a solider could wear this special helmet and see a triangle that represents an F-16. The soldier can then just contact the plane directly, and, depending on the ordnance that the plane is carrying, air support might be given right away. Other information might be given with the help of augmented reality.

DARPA is working with several companies like Northrop Grumman, Raytheon, and Vuzix to make these goggles. I don’t know if you have heard of Vuzix, but they make these viewing goggles like the VR920. Vuzix plans on making these goggles about 3mm thick.

I wonder if there is any way that Vuzix could make some of these hologoggles for the civilians. I have seen a lot of augmented reality Apps before, so why not something like this?

Intel has new Oak Trail Atom platform

Posted: 12 Apr 2011 08:49 AM PDT

Intel has a spanking new Atom platform, formerly codenamed "Oak Trail", where it is now available and will arrive in devices beginning from May onwards – and for the rest of the year as well. There is also more than 35 innovative tablet and hybrid designs which come from companies such as Evolve III, Fujitsu Limited, Lenovo, Motion Computing, Razer, and Viliv among others.

Intel intends to accelerate the Atom product line by moving faster than Moore's law, where they intend to deliver new products to market using a trio of process technologies within the next 3 years. Apart from that, the company will also deliver a sneak peak of its next-generation, 32nm Intel Atom platform, which is now known as "Cedar Trail."

Could the Cedar Trail solution actually usher in a new age of fanless, cool and quiet, sleek and innovative netbooks, entry-level desktops and all-in-one designs? Only time will tell. The new Intel Atom processor Z670 is capable of delivering improved video playback, fast Internet browsing and longer battery life, all without sacrificing on performance. It is also noteworthy that the new "Oak Trail" will be able to support 1080p video decoding in addition to HDMI connectivity. Other platforms supported included Adobe Flash, of course.

Of course, the good news doesn’t just stop here, as the new power-efficient Intel Atom processor Z670 is able to run on wide range of operating systems, such as Google’s Android, MeeGo and Windows. Being uniquely flexibile, this bodes well for the consumers since it will open up the doors for newer kinds of tablet and hybrid designs that intend to merge both the netbook and tablet features in one amalgamation.

Accompanying the Intel Atom Z670 processor would be the Intel SM35 Express Chipset that delivers a lead-free, halogen-free design alongside high-speed USB 2.0 that delivers greater performance and Intel High-Definition Audio to enable premium home theater sound.

Garment Deodorizer for a breath of fresh air

Posted: 12 Apr 2011 08:33 AM PDT

Some of us tend to sweat more than the others, and even after using the most powerful cleaning agent off the supermarket shelf to do your laundry, it still can’t quite get rid of the stink. So what do you do with your laundry after it has dried? Hanging it in your closet with mothballs might do the trick, but there is the Garment Deodorizer that can step in to do a better job.

So far, an independent test of the Garment Deodorizer has been proven to deodorize and refresh garments by reducing bacteria in them by up to 97%. Any garments hung with the device in the included garment bag should come out smelling like a bunch of roses, as its integrated fan circulates throughout the garments. Powered by a quartet of C batteries, the Garment Deodorizer retails for $79.95. Hopefully those batteries can last the distance!

Razor eSpark Electric Scooter

Posted: 12 Apr 2011 08:28 AM PDT

You know how scooters were all the rage in the past? Well, if you just take it at face value and want to get around in a manner that is more eco-friendly and healthier, then you’ll be glad to know that there is an updated version – the Razor eSpark Electric Scooter. Retailing for $142.90, this is an inspiration of the original E100 electric scooter, complete with real sparks which will definitely light up your trail.

Since it is electric-powered, they will be extremely quiet just like electric vehicles, with a high torque chain-driven motor running in the background. Whenever you want to make sparks fly right before you reach your destination, just step on the foot controlled, detachable Spark Bar. Capable of cruising at speeds of up to 10 mph, a full charge of this puppy is capable of delivering up to 40 minutes of use, which of course, we believe is lesser the more pounds you carry around your waist.

It takes around eight hours to juice up it up to a full tank so to speak, but to work up to 40 minutes at a go, it is a perfect case of diminishing returns. Still, the sparks should make the entire experience worth it – are you willing to fork out the money asked for this?

Smile!- You’re Going to Jail

Posted: 12 Apr 2011 07:11 AM PDT

Some Police Departments in the U.S are going high-tech to help fight crime. They're installing their patrol cars with automatic license plate readers or ALPR’s. These cameras read license plates of parked and moving cars — hundreds per minute and they can take pictures of the plates as they pass by. If a suspect license plate number is read, audible and visual alarms can alert the officer within milliseconds of the license plate's capture.

The cameras can also take snapshots of the vehicle itself, along with the date, time, and location. Officials say that if conditions are right, the camera's can even get a shot of the driver. I guess these things make for a pretty good case against the bad guy.

Officers can now scan plates like wildfire, and some of the units will even scan, run and hold the information from an entire shift. Not only that, but this new device is gonna make merely driving through a parking lot a gold mine for officers.

Law enforcement agencies across the United States have lauded the system for greatly enhancing criminal investigations.

In both Los Angeles County and in Cincinnati, police say they have used data collected from these devices to track down murder suspects. The Long Beach Police Department has recovered nearly 1,300 stolen vehicles and arrested 208 people in three years from hits in the system.

Oh yes… Big Brother is watching you.

Facebook and 3D – Car Sales of the Future?

Posted: 11 Apr 2011 07:36 PM PDT

Every year, I try and attend the New York International Auto show, I enjoy checking out all the concept cars and the newest offerings from my dream car list. Some of the displays are cool, but the way you're introduced to a car is pretty much the same old thing, until now…

Subaru of America, Inc. will debut the all-new Impreza at its New York International Auto Show news conference via 3-D video.  In a show first, attendees will throw on some 3-D glasses so they can experience the lives of Subaru owners – from mud running, to yoga, to car driving – as its new model is revealed to the world.  You can also catch the show in plain old 2D on Subaru.com, and it may just be a show worth watching, the Impreza is being touted as the most fuel efficient all wheel drive vehicle in America.

Marking its best sales in company history, Subaru’s April 20th news conference will take place on the floor of the Jacob Javits Convention Center right here in New York City.  We will get to watch the all-new Impreza come to life in 3-D, hear from Subaru leadership and be the first to see the 2012 Impreza 4-door and 5-door models.

If you're a Subaru fan, or think you might be, and are not attending the auto show, you can watch the live news conference and unveiling at Subaru.com.  Subaru will address questions during a live question-and-answer session on the same day and that session will be streamed on the 2012 Subaru Impreza Facebook page.

So now we're using 3D technology and Facebook to sell cars. I guess the future is coming at us pretty fast. I'm looking forward to the day that I can hang out in my pajamas and have the International Auto Show drive through my bedroom in 3D, Now THAT would be cool… I'd miss the pretzels though, that, and the $60.00 dollar parking.
