Check out this 26 foot snakebot camera!

Posted: 14 Mar 2011 05:28 PM PDT

Even though I am based in the United States, I am constantly thinking about Japan after the tsunami and earthquake.

A while ago, we reported on a snake-like robot known as the Omnitread that is essentially a train of treaded cars that can got through rubble. It is a design that I have seen before in the Firegard, and this model here.

This particular device is a self-propelled snakebot developed by Satoshi Tadokoro, and it also has the ability to burrow through collapsed buildings. A light and a camera will show what is buried underneath.

There are no treads on this particular thing, but it uses motorized nylon bristles to make it crawl through tight places. It can take very tight turns, and I would imagine that it can return with information needed to perform a rescue.

It looks like the designer used a caterpillar for inspiration, and this looks like what a caterpillar would look like if it had legs all over its body instead of just its underbelly.

I completely agree with my Source and say that yes, I hope this snakebot was looking for people under the rubble in Japan right now. I could use a bit of hope in the midst of seeing the devastation there.

Wilson Sleek boosts your smartphone antenna

Posted: 14 Mar 2011 04:59 PM PDT

I have been trying for a while, but I finally got to go hands-on with the Sleek, a signal-boosting antenna for smartphones from Wilson.

The Sleek is designed for use with an automobile. It comes with an antenna that suction cups to the car roof and communicates with the cellular site. It also includes another amplifier that works like a cellular phone cradle, and is powered by through the cigarette lighter that boosts the signal to and from a cell site.

Wilson’s Sleek connects to the smartphone with a mini USB cable, so it will power the cell phone while you are driving. With the help of a Bluetooth headset or a smartphone on speaker, you can have a long conversation for a long drive through “dead zones”.

I wish I had a chance to try this out on some long distance trip. Recently, I drove from Las Vegas to Salt Lake City, and I talked on the phone most of the way there. I was surprised that I had clear reception on my Droid X Android phone and didn’t cut out, even though there isn’t much in between those major cities.

If you have a long drive ahead of you through “nowhere”, you might want to get this Wilson Sleek, you should be able to purchase it on Amazon for about $79.99, marked down from $129.95.

We go literally hands-on with the iPad Strap

Posted: 14 Mar 2011 04:30 PM PDT

I realize that there are a lot of beautiful things to look at in this picture, but focus on the thing that is sticking to this handsome blogger’s hand.

That is an iPad, and it is attached to my hand via the iPad Strap. Allow me to give it the proper introduction: In a world full of complex gadgets, a simple gadget accessory can change the world.

The iPad Strap is designed for those who really need to have it attached to their wrist because they want to show it off or they are always working on it. It is just a strap that tucks onto the corners so it is a tight fit, but you won’t have to worry about dropping your favorite Apple tablet.

This especially comes in handy for typing on the iPad with one hand, as it is difficult to keep the iPad still, even when it is on your lap. Best of all, the iPad strap is completely ambidextrous, but has to be adjusted properly to fit the left and right hand.

According to the official site, the iPad Strap is available for about $34.95. That might seem a lot for what is essentially an elastic strap, but when you think about it, the convenience of it is worth paying for.

CyberPower throws in world’s fastest graphics card into new offerings

Posted: 14 Mar 2011 05:00 AM PDT

When it comes to the world of competitive PC gaming, you can be sure that most folks would want nothing but the very best inside the chassis of their machines. Of course, you would not only enjoy the benefits of a large screen display by seeing more pixels than your opponents, having the right kind of keyboard and mouse combination would also go a long, long way in helping you achieve digital domination among your peers.

One important component that cannot be overlooked (apart from the processor of choice, of course) would be the graphics card – now, CyberPower intends to deliver nothing but the very best for its customers by announcing a series of high-end desktop gaming PCs which are based on AMD’s new Radeon HD 6990 graphics card, and it is with solid backing that AMD has called that as the “world’s fastest.”

CyberPower will make available the new Radeon HD 6990 graphics card through its entire lineup of desktop gaming PCs, ranging from the Gamer Dragon and Ultra all the way to its extreme Fang EVO Series. Of course, you can be sure that such performance will not come cheap, with the starting price for a CyberPower Radeon HD 6990-based system standing at $1,399, going north from there.

Just what makes the Radeon HD 6990 so special? For starters, it comes with a couple of Cayman GPUs which have been clocked at 830MHz, 3072 stream processors, 192 texture units, two 256-bit memory channels, and 4GBs of GDDR5 running at 5000MHz. Apart from that, if you think that you are still performance starved, there is the option to bump up the speed by a simple flip of a switch on top of the card in order to enable the built-in overclocking mode – that alone will boost the clock frequency to 880MHz. If you decide to run that with another Radeon 6990 in a Quad CrossFire configuration, your rig will hit a performance boost from 60% to 100% on extremely high-resolution applications.

All CyberPower machines will come pre-loaded with Microsoft Windows 7 64-bit Operating System with Service Pack 1 in order to enhance your gaming and multimedia experience, accompanied by an industry-best 3-year limited warranty and free lifetime phone support.

Fly like an eagle with Hammacher

Posted: 14 Mar 2011 03:01 AM PDT

Remember the R. Kelly hit song, “Fly like an eagle”? Well, with those living in the northern hemisphere swinging into spring, it makes perfect sense to start planning on how you are going to spend more time outdoors with your loved ones – be it a picnic or just playing catch. Well, Hammacher has a new toy for you to, er, toy around with, where we’re talking about the 9 1/2′ Remote Controlled Bald Eagle.

Now this American icon will now come in the form of a toy, where it boasts of the form of an engine and propeller-powered prodigious avian which is capable of soaring up to 100′ in the air. Meant to create and inspire awe from all who see it, the eagle’s 9 1/2′ wingspan is capable of creating an airfoil which will catch the wind to provide lift and enable broad turns. More on this pretty unique toy in the extended post if your interest has been piqued.

The 9 1/2′ Remote Controlled Bald Eagle’s engine will tip the scales at less than one ounce, but this is a case of not judging a book by its cover – or rather, a toy by its engine. Capable of generating over 30X its weight in thrust despite its size to replicate the bird of prey’s rapid dives and powerful soaring, you can be sure that the “Remote Controlled Bald Eagle performs swift loops and it even hovers in-place against the wind like a real eagle” – at least that is what is claimed by Hammacher Schlemmer’s General Manager, Fred Berns.

The transmitter trim controls will be able to deliver precise adjustment of the propeller in order to move the eagle left, right, up, or down in mid-flight. It is made up of a carbon fiber frame alongside a rip stop nylon and polyester body, letting the eagle fly in moderate winds of up to 10 mph, while withstanding turbulent landings.

For those who are interested, you will be able to pick up the 9 1/2′ Remote Controlled Bald Eagle for $499.95. Not exactly the cheapest gadget or toy out there for your kid, and you would do well to fly this under adult supervision since it does look pretty fragile at times. Hopefully other eagles won’t mistake it for a rival and start attacking it.

Posted: 13 Mar 2011 07:45 PM PDT

It's probably no surprise to anyone that I'm not quite right. Anyone that actually knows me, can certainly substantiate in a million ways just how, let's call it "different" I am from say… oh, the rest of all mankind. That being said, they are my friends, and like me, because of, or maybe in spite of, whatever it is that my parents did to me as a child. Don't get me wrong, they are the most wonderful loving parents, that being said, whatever the heck is wrong with me, is their fault.

Enter Dr. Freud's Therapy ball, gone are the days when one must make it to scheduled appointments and pay ridiculous fees at the therapists office, and let's face it, those appointments are never when you REALLY need to talk to someone, like in the middle of the night when you're hearing the voices again, and this time there telling you your pet turtle is evil. This Magic 8 type ball responds to your concerns and confessions with impartial, yet engaged objectivity. You need to simply shake this black plastic ball and then read over twenty different responses such as ”How did that make you feel?” or ‘Talk about your mother.”

Also available are the Affirmation Ball (that will throw some wonderful compliments your way), the Instant Excuse Ball (to keep you out of trouble) and the Wall Street Guru Ball (for better than average investment advice), all the tools you need, to live your best life, for less than $8 bucks each, at  www.mcphee.com

Pretty similar to its Rolleiflex predecessors, the Blackbird Fly will feature a couple of objective lenses, where one is used for taking the photograph while the other is meant for a top-down viewfinder. Look into the top of the camera if you want to view your image on a matter focusing screen, right before taking the photograph.
