Philips Portable GuideLight

Posted: 29 Mar 2010 04:48 PM PDT

I have a couple of plug-in emergency lights, but they aren’t nearly as attractive as these Philips lights.  Sure, my lights work just fine, but they look like something an elderly woman would keep plugged in within her bathroom.  There’s something to be said for attractive back-up lighting.  This Philips light will also come in handy even outside of emergency type situations.

The light is soft, so that it won’t disturb others within your home when you’re wandering around the house in the dark.  The portable light can be popped off of its base and carried around, then when it needs a charge it’ll just need to be put back on the base.  It automatically turns on when the power is out or when it senses movement.  You can purchase it for $22 from Amazon.

SIMsystem keeps track of underwater status, wirelessly

Posted: 29 Mar 2010 03:33 PM PDT

Welcome to SIMsystem, which is being hailed as the world’s first electric underpants. I can scarcely believe that this is the first electric pair of undies. Hasn’t someone made a pair of electric underwear to keep your torso warm?

Anyway, the SIMsystem is designed for people who live in rest homes, and the workers who love them. Or, if nothing else, must work with them and change their Depends every once in a while. The SIMsystem uses this sensor strip in the underwear that will detect moistness, and then will send a report via text message, or even over an intercom.

Hopefully the intercom message won’t be something like: “Mrs. Fields has just wet her pants again”. Perhaps something like “Code 142 for Mrs. Fields” will do until everyone learns the code.

You might be wondering how the SIMsystem communicates wirelessly, and it has nothing to do with Bluetooth, bur rather Zigbee.

I suppose we are looking at rest homes of the future who have daily “bladder reports”. It is too bad that these cannot be put into diapers. After all, it is the babies that sometimes get neglected with their diaper changes. However, give it time, and I’m sure that this SIMsystem will get off the ground.

One-handed keyboard on the back of a jellyfish

Posted: 29 Mar 2010 02:58 PM PDT

Take a look at what you see here, this is not a mouse that requires five fingers to use, but it is a keyboard.

It is a keyboard that doesn’t require two hands, either. It is designed by Erik Campbell, and uses fnger combinations like piano chords in order to type the right letters, numbers, or other symbols.

This isn’t the first time that someone has divined a one-handed keyboard, and one designed by Doug Engelbart in 1968 is like a box with keys like a piano.

This Campbell model is rounder and nicer looking, and borrows its shape from that of nature as it resemles the back of a jellyfish.

I suppose this could be the beginning of an age of one-handed keyboards, and I can see a day where the traditional QWERTY is gone.

Then all we will have on our desks is a mouse and this one-handed keyboard. I would imagine that interfacing will look pretty interesting.

Of course, it might take a while before we can transition into the age of the one-handed keyboard. I mean, if I have to learn how to type again, then I’m not certain that it is worth the effort.

However, I don’t want to be the last guy who still uses a QWERTY. I can just see me in the rest home on my QWERTY, with visiting relatives looking at it like kids of today view typewriters.

AirPower from RCA could make us a truly wireless society

Posted: 29 Mar 2010 02:38 PM PDT

While I was at CTIA Wireless 2010, I saw a booth that had something to say about AirPower.

AirPower is some new technology developed by RCA, and it is designed to steal the energy from the Wi-Fi signals in the air.

I had no idea that those Wi-Fi signals could actually carry any energy, but apparently it only takes five to six hours to juice up one of these AirPower batteries if it is within close proximity of a Wi-Fi hotspot.

These AirPower chargers will be available sometime before the holidays, and they intend to market them as emergency back-up power supplies.

I don’t know about you, but I don’t see why we can’t use this AirPower power supply all of the time. Perhaps we could put smaller versions of these AirPower batteries on our cell phones, MP3 players, digital cameras, laptops, and other forms of mobile devices.

I mean, this is using the power of Wi-Fi to power a mobile device. This could be the end to charging cables as we know it! It really is everything we want when it comes to powering our mobile device.

In short, the future is looking bright when it comes to mobile gadget power. I’m looking forward to setting up my work at a coffee shop and using the Wi-Fi signal as power. No more searching for an outlet as I would be truly a wireless man.

Solar Electric Shaver

Posted: 29 Mar 2010 11:00 AM PDT

Those of you that have the strong tendency to shave on the go or away from electrical outlets, this shaver is able to go all sorts of places.  It’s powered by the sun, which means as far as this goes you could go through your grooming process in any location you choose.  Just make sure to leave it in a window to soak up a little sun while it’s not in use.

The gadget can get a full charge from a bright shiny day within 8 to 12 hours.  That might make it not the best choice as a primary source, but it’d be a great back up to have in your desk at work or any other areas you tend to frequent.  An electric shaver is a strange item to rely on solar power with, but if it does the trick then it’s worth a try.  Plus it’s one of the more affordable ones I’ve come across.  You can purchase it for £14.99 or about $22 through Nigel’s Eco Store.

Wrecking Ball and Crane Lamps

Posted: 29 Mar 2010 09:36 AM PDT

There are just those times when you really need a little extra lighting in some of the darker corners of your home.  Overhead lighting just never seems to cut it when you’re curled up with your favorite book.  Well for those of you that enjoy industrial looking items, Studio Job has come up with a couple of different interesting choices.  The Wrecking Ball and Crane Lamps were created specifically for a gallery upon request.

The Carpenter Workshop Gallery will have the commissioned lamps on display up until May 20th of this year.  Each one has a smaller sized light bulb inside of the cab of the vehicle then a larger one to help actually illuminate a room.  It would probably be tricky to get your hands on one of these bronze creations, but there’s no harm in dreaming.

Thingamagoop now comes as a sequel

Posted: 29 Mar 2010 06:30 AM PDT

The Thingamagoop has received an upgrade, and will henceforth be known as (drumroll, please) as the Thingamagoop 2. Not exactly awe inspiring, don’t you think? Well, this awesome and yet diminutive light-controlled, analog synthesizer will rely on its LED-tipped tentacle to flash light at different speeds into its photocell. The photocell itself will communicate with the main oscillator, resulting in blips and bleeps of pure electronic amazement. Apart from that, both analog and digital oscillators are available on the Thingamagoop 2, alongside an improved speaker and an Arduino Programmer jack. Depending on your budget, you can bring home the Thingamagoop 2 as a fully assembled unit, or save some money to purchase the kit and assemble it yourself. That results in a price point that ranges between $99.99 and $159.99.

Going wireless is the next big thing for most folks, and the Cordless Patio Lamp steps in to fill in such shoes perfectly. This is a cordless, weatherproof lamp which offers outdoor illumination without the need for an electrical outlet – of course, it would mean making sure there is enough battery juice within before you use it for any event. The battery powered lamp’s LEDs are capable of producing 200 lumens of brightness, casting a bright, 25′ circle of light onto a patio or deck. The brightness level can also be adjusted to range from a soft glow to a crisp light which illuminates a dinner table. The lamp itself telescopes from 24″ to 60″ high, making it comfortable on either a table or on the ground. Thanks to its sealed aluminum housing, the lamp is protected from rain, wind, and sun. Eight D batteries power the $99.95 Cordless Patio Lamp, offering up to 400 hours of light.

Jabra Clipper Bluetooth stereo headset

Posted: 29 Mar 2010 05:00 AM PDT

Jabra, a well known name when it comes to Bluetooth-enabled devices, is back with a brand new stereo headset known as the Jabra Clipper. No, this one won’t shave off hair that grows out from the ears of some people, but will instead offer a stunning listening experience via a wireless stereo headset. This diminutive clip-on device comes with noise-blocking ear buds which combines style alongside minimalistic, easy-to-use controls. As with its namesake, it can be clipped onto bags, clothing as well as belts with the chameleon-like ability to switch between music and calls in a jiffy. Developed by GN Netcom, a world leader in innovative headset solutions, the Jabra Clipper can’t be purchased from just anywhere, as it is available exclusively only at Verizon Wireless retail stores across the US as well as the online website, VerizonWireless.com, when May 2010 rolls around.

Using the Jabra Clipper means you won’t need to switch between an MP3 player and a phone whenever there is an incoming call, since both devices can hook up wirelessly to let you switch seamlessly between calls and music in a jiffy. Not only that, all incoming calls will automatically override music that are played on a cellphone and, using the multi-function button lets you pause, skip tracks or alter the volume in a snap. This means you are able to store your cellphone as well as MP3 player separately in different pockets or bags without worrying about the connection.

The Jabra Clipper will play nice with just about any Bluetooth-enabled device, and can hook up to two different devices simultaneously thanks to the Multiuse technology. Users can also hook it up to a computer and listen to their favorite tunes there. Noise-blocking ear buds are thrown into the mix which will help keep sound quality pristine at all times, completely blocking out any external sounds. The Jabra Clipper can also be used with just about any other 3.5mm headphones in the market just in case you were wondering. Retailing for $59.99 a pop, it will be out later this May as mentioned earlier.
