Electric/Hybrid Car comes with a scooter in the back

Posted: 25 Apr 2011 04:05 PM PDT

This is the McCar, and before you crack the most obvious Mcjoke that you are thinking, it is built by Geely, the same Chinese company that owns Volvo.

The McCar is presently on display at the Shanghai Motor Show, and it is both a car and scooter at the same time. I suppose that you could call it a “cooter”, but I don’t like the implication.

The purpose of the car and scooter combo is so the user/driver is able to use the scooter to get to where he or she is going if the place is far away from where he or she had to park. For example, let’s say you park in a huge parking lot at the mall, and instead of walking the city blocks to get to your favorite store, you unload the scooter from the back and drive there.

The McCar is planned to have a hybrid model and a fully electric model capable of a 93 miles per charge. The scooter itself will have a range of 18 miles per charge, and I’m not certain whether this smaller vehicle can be charged by the bigger one.

All in all, this is a pretty good idea, in a world where cars have to be inconveniently separated from us. Of course, this leaves the question of where you park the scooter. Unless you intend to drive the scooter around all day like certain lazy people at the Wal-Mart.

Wii Successor is coming, Nintendo to have it on display at E3 2011

Posted: 25 Apr 2011 03:49 PM PDT

I guess we all knew that it was coming, but Nintendo has officially announced the successor to the Wii is on its way.

This new console is not planned to hit the market until 2012, possibly in the Spring. Apparently, Microsoft and Sony are not planning to unveil their new successors until 2014, so that gives some time for Nintendo to raise the bar as far as console gaming is concerned.

This console, which is said to have the code name of “Project Cafe” is expected to have “bigger and badder specifications than either the Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3″. That probably means that it will finally get the HD going on, but this high-tech upgrade probably won’t include 3D.

The Wii 2, or whatever the big N will call it, is suspected of having a new controller interface that has the D-pad with buttons layout as well as a large touchscreen input. It will also support the Wiimote controllers that really changed the gaming industry through simplification.

Do you want to see it for yourself? So do I. The Wii successor is planned to be on display at E3 2011 from June 7-9, 2011 in LA. I attended E3 last year, and I might attend this year. If you remember last year, they company showed off the 3DS. I never did wait in the lines for that, but I think I would be more than willing to brave them in order to play with the Wii Successor.

Japanese bus uses personal luxury cocoons

Posted: 25 Apr 2011 03:31 PM PDT

What you are seeing here isn’t the maximum security section of the Imperial detention block. Think of it as the first-class section of a bus line.

The Willer Express, a bus with a route from Osaka to Tokyo, is a twelve seater bus that has luxury seat modules that are appropriately named cocoons. The relaxation pods are able to recline 140 degrees, and have a personal entertainment system, power outlets, even Wi-Fi.

The best part about it is that each passenger is totally separated from the other. It doesn’t look like it is completely private, but it is enough so that you don’t feel that you have to talk to a passenger next to you “just to be polite”. You can also take your nap and not worry if anyone notices your drooling problem.

In all honesty, I don’t even think that first class on an airplane is as good as this particular service. This Willer Express actually makes me want to take a bus, rather than fly.

Of course, this costs a little more than your average long-distance bus ride. It costs about $130 for a one way trip, which is about six or seven hours, which is cheaper (but not shorter) than a bullet train.

iTamtam offers a different take on a speaker dock

Posted: 25 Apr 2011 12:11 PM PDT

Now this is definitely an interesting looking iPod speaker dock that some of you might actually mistake it for a chair of sorts. Known as the iTamtam, it will cost a rather pricey £169.99, bringing along with it a quartet of 11W titanium tweeters and a rather beefy 25W subwoofer. This means this rather impressive looking designer speaker is no slouch when it comes to performance, fully capable of bringing the house down when the situation calls for it – of course, a packed party will not get any justice with this since you will need much more aural firepower then, but for average home use, the iTamtam shouldn’t be discounted. Heck, it doubles up as a stool when not in use as a speaker dock, so that alone earns plenty of brownie points in our books.

The iTamtam will come with a built-in lithium battery that is capable of lasting up to 8 hours of non-stop play when away from the nearest power outlet, and will also play nice with other devices that work with a 3.5mm connection.

Samsung W200 loves swimming with the fishes

Posted: 25 Apr 2011 12:03 PM PDT

If scuba diving or at the very least, snorkeling is your cup of tea, then chances are you would have also invested in a good quality waterproof camera (assuming you do have the necessary shutterbug skills to go along with your other wet, wet passion, of course) – either that, or a DSLR with an expensive underwater housing. Well, Samsung intends to cater to those who are just starting out on this underwater photography thing with their latest release – the Samsung W200.

Of course, the Samsung W200 first and foremost is not a digital shooter but rather, one that captures video underwater. What you can’t do with the Samsung W200, however, would be to bring it along with you on your deep underwater forays, since anything more than 3 meters would turn it over to a candidate for the vast consumer electronics graveyard.

Of course, that does not mean it is a sissy by any means since it would be suitable to shoot great video of a relaxed day by the pool, or perhaps even up-close shots of coral reefs. The W200's anti-water drop coating translates to the LCD display being free of condensation, even though you are in damp conditions, allowing you to continue with your amateur filming sessions without having to wipe the display.

The lens itself comes with anti-fog coating which allows steam to disperse so you always have clear, blur-free videos and pictures even if you decide to come straight after out of the pool. In order to shoot amazing underwater footage without looking too complicated, the W200 will also include an Aqua Mode setting, where it will automatically set the ideal parameters for the bright and clear underwater video.

Do not look down on it just because the W200 is slim and compact – it is a tough cookie on its own, being shock-proof and dust-proof, making it more or less the perfect candidate to bring on your next backpacking adventure. Heck, surely you don’t mind letting Junior have a go at this since it is robust enough to withstand some minor knocks and drops, and with a built-in USB arm, it is even easier to share your adventure at your next stop.

The Samsung W200 will be out later this May for $159 a pop.

AViiQ Portable Quick Stand

Posted: 25 Apr 2011 11:55 AM PDT

When it comes to the iPhone or iPod, you would surely know by now that there are just too many third party accessories available for either device, ranging from portable speaker docks all the way to cases and skins. Well, we will look at something that is slightly off the beaten path today – the AViiQ Portable Quick Stand. This isn’t any iPod dock, but rather, would be a laptop stand.

This unique peripheral will tip the scales at less than 3.4 oz, while making sure that it will not take up anything more than 3/8 of an inch thick off a measuring tape when folded. Judging by the measurements that you’ve seen so far, you can be sure that the AViiQ Portable Quick Stand has been specially designed in order to fit into just about any bag, and is also capable of playing nice with laptops that measure up to 17 inches in size.

What the AViiQ Portable Quick Stand does is not to rehash the same old – instead, it will rethink along the lines of traditional design, throwing away what is not required (the bulk in this case) while retaining both usability and practicality. Inspired by the principles and flexibility of origami, an ancient Japanese art of paper folding, the AViiQ Portable Quick Stand is able to turn quickly from a slim flat sheet to the optimal ergonomic angle thanks to the expansion and collapse that are instantaneous when required.

According to Alan Yeung, Co-Founder of AViiQ, "Even though some stands are designed to support laptops efficiently, they are generally not meant for travel. The AViiQ Portable Quick Stand is a combination of ultimate portability, optimal usability and elegant minimalistic design, perfect for business travelers, creative professionals, students, or anybody who uses a laptop."

The inclusion of an ergonomic angle will do its bit to reduce strain on the wrist, whereas the characteristic design helps increase air flow to dissipate heat and improve battery life. Not only that, the German-made Hylite material that is comprised of aluminum sheets bonded to a polypropylene core will do more than its bit to deliver extreme durability without having to sacrifice on flexibility, portability and stylishness. The AViiQ Portable Quick Stand will come in Onyx Black, Cadet Gray, Chartreuse Green, Cerulean Blue and Magenta colors, where they retail for $39.99 a pop.

PhoneSheriff – Know Where your Kids are, and What they’re Doing

Posted: 25 Apr 2011 08:10 AM PDT

Retina-X Studios just announced the availability of PhoneSheriff for iPhone, Android, BlackBerry, and Windows smartphones. This parental control service for mobile phones allows parents to monitor, filter, and restrict their children’s smartphone activities. The parent sets the software to record and block activities associated with specific numbers and it can also track locations via GPS.

PhoneSheriff is a stealth application which allows parents to see everything their kids do while on the phone, like every text message sent or received, every call dialed or received and all videos and pictures captured by the phone. Yikes! Then, parents can check the kids actions by logging onto the hidden interface on the phone itself, or in order to be extra sneaky, they can log into a secure Web panel from any Web browser to view the recorded logs and stored GPS locations. Boy I'm glad my parents didn't have this stuff when I was a kid!

This new program can also block phone numbers from contacting your kid via SMS or phone calls. In addition, applications and websites can be filtered or restricted. Parents can also set a time schedule to allow or disallow use of the phone at certain times. Score one, for total parental control.

PhoneSheriff also allows parents to send secret SMS commands to the monitored phone. This allows parents to track where their child is at any time using the Instant GPS Locate command. This feature also works as an anti-theft element, as parents can locate and monitor the phone even when the SIM card has been changed. Wow… I’m all for keeping track of kids, but isn’t this almost too much of a parental advantage? Not that I wouldn’t use it, I’m just saying if my folks had this, I’d still be grounded.

A one-year subscription to the PhoneSheriff costs $49.97 and works with Android, BlackBerry, iPhone, Windows Mobile, and Symbian OS smartphones. For more information, please visit www.phonesheriff.com oh, and good luck to your kids.

PooPoo Paper Company – Adds to the Crap on your Desk

Posted: 24 Apr 2011 07:55 PM PDT

Let me introduce you to the PooPoo Paper Company, manufacturing recycled and odorless paper products made from elephant poo, the company also makes a load of other paper products, all from poo derived from large fiber eating animals. Think horses, cows and the very exclusive, panda poo.

They start by collecting readily available poo from various wildlife parks, and then they convert it to paper, which they sell as stationary, greeting cards, notepads, photo albums and holiday cards, because nothing says Happy Holidays like a card made out of poop. I'd like to point out that a portion of the proceeds go to elephant conservation and welfare programs, which help foster healthy and happy animals who keep, giving us, um,  more raw paper materials, and the cycle continues… with a single elephant turd being made into about 25 sheets of stationary.

Of course as you must have already imagined, poo poo paper doesn’t smell anything like, well, poop, because the company first lets the waste dry out completely and then thoroughly rinses it. What’s leftover is merely the fibrous remains of the plants that the elephants consume, which is an amazingly great source material for paper production.

So its a nifty, non stinky environmentally friendly, renewable source of paper products that benefit us, and our animal friends.

So visit the "poo-tique" and get yourself some poop paper today, prices for poo products start at around $10.00 bucks, with new Poo Poo Paper roses coming soon. Just be careful you don't step in it….
