Holograms come to the smartphones, to a limited degree Posted: 05 Dec 2011 07:30 AM PST I hope that I didn’t get anyone too excited about this headline. I mean, I always wanted a smartphone that has a holographic interface so I could communicate, Star Wars style. This 3D Hologram TPU is not that, but it does turn your smartphone into something cooler. This is a screen protector that creates a cool holographic effect when the smartphone is in sleep mode. As you can see, you can choose from a variety of interesting holograms. As you can also see, it is possible to see the hologram while the phone is in use, but just barely. I wish I could have a chance to try this out for myself and report back to you. Perhaps they will be on display at CES in January. If so, I definitely want to at least get a picture, but I don’t think that will do it justice. Considering that most smartphone users use a screen protector anyway, I don’t see why we can’t use one that is a hologram. I don’t know if they have any other designs than these, as I’m not certain whether consumers will want monsters and aliens as their hologram of choice. If you want to see a better view of these products, head on over to the Audiotronic web site. Conference Calendar – The global conference and expo finder. Flying robots build this tower at the FRAC Centre Posted: 05 Dec 2011 07:15 AM PST What you are seeing here is a 20-foot tall, 1,500 block structure at the FRAC Centre in Orleans, and I think it’s pretty FRAC-ing amazing. The reason why is because this structure is made by robots. Not just any robots, but flying robots. There are about four flying robots who serve as construction workers, and they have the quadrocopter construction of Parrot’s AR.Drone. There is a video of it after the jump showing a camera on one of these robots putting a block into place, and it is surprisingly precise. I’m not certain how confident I would be just standing around a tower built by robots, but if you look on the video, it appears that there are a whole group of people standing around like they are at a party. Granted, the blocks are made of polystyrene foam, but I don’t feel comfortable in any room with a giant card house in it. By the way, the tower is supposed to be a model of a futuristic city that is meant to house 30,000 people. Man, I wonder if one day, real flying robots will construct such a city. For now, you can see this “Flight Assembled Architecture” at the FRAC center through February 19. This project is the work of architects Fabio Gramazio and Matthias Kohler, with the help of ETH Zurich roboticist Raffaello D’Andrea. Cool Gift Idea: Digital Picture Frames, check out our reviews. Raytheon is working on a mini-bomber Posted: 05 Dec 2011 07:00 AM PST We have reported on devices from Raytheon before, and they are usually making these very neat things that you don’t really want to see being used in a real-life war. For example, they were working on a prototype Power Loader that I never want to see being used to fight an alien, and a pain gun that I never want to be on the wrong side of. Now, they are working on this idea of turning a small spy drone into a bomb dropper. This is different from the huge bombers that you see that are large targets, and this little mini-bomber is smaller and probably harder to target. So far, they managed to to fly this drone called the Cobra into a testing zone successfully. I suppose that if they get a contract with the military, we might be seeing a whole new era where mini-bombers could be invading countries. You know what this reminds me off? The new Legend of Zelda game, Skyward Sword. In that game, you eventually get this flying golden beetle that can pick up a bomb and then drop it on an enemy target. One of the problems I have with this weapon is its limited range, and I wonder how far these mini-bombs can fly. Conference Calendar – The global conference and expo finder. Robot arm makes flight simulator more realistic Posted: 05 Dec 2011 05:30 AM PST In order to train pilots, especially those in the air force and military, it goes without saying that using a flight simulator is far more cost effective compared to letting a rookie sit in an expensive, multi-million dollar fighter jet. After all, it certainly helps the military and air force cut down on costs should the simulated flight experience a crash – not to mention saving lives in the process. Apart from that, the best combat flight simulators in the world will enable military pilots to practice virtual dog-fighting all within the “comfort” of within a machine which is capable of tilting and moving like a mild-mannered theme park ride. How about upping the ante when it comes to such rides? Well, a next-generation simulator that resides on the end of a huge robotic arm will enable trainees enjoy the sensation of white-knuckle 6G forces all within the simulated space of a screaming-fast fighter jet. The robotic arm will do its job in manhandling of pilots, where said pilot will also be wearing 3D-display headsets. Wearing these headsets are able to create an immersive experience of performing barrel rolls, or even pulling off extreme turns at high speeds. This particular high-tech simulator could can also be specially configured to simulate spacecraft or hovering helicopters, in addition to other land-based vehicles like tanks, trucks, race cars and motorcycles. I wonder if Formula 1 cars are not exempt from being simulated considering the kind of G forces that drivers experience in the vehicle’s cockpit. Saeid Nahavandi, director of the Centre for Intelligent Systems Research at Deakin University in Australia says, “This next-generation simulator uses its oversized robot arm to spin users at high speeds in any direction. No other simulator can provide the full experience of flying a military jet with all the gut-wrenching G-forces while only seven meters (23 feet) off the ground.” Introducing Foolish Gadgets because not all gadgets are cool [ Robot arm makes flight simulator more realistic copyright by Coolest Gadgets ] Related Posts: |
Coffee from a tap is now a reality Posted: 05 Dec 2011 05:00 AM PST I know that some of us like nothing better than to knock back a tipple or two after a particularly long, hard day at work. I helps keep stress at bay, or so I would like to think so, not to mention help working at breweries as well as malt fields to keep their job in this multi-billion dollar industry. Well, some of you might like to drink from a bottle, but others prefer the smoother feeling of an actual tap, not to mention working on getting just the right amount of head in your drink. As for coffee, the other multi-billion dollar industry, instead of getting your favorite morning brew from one of those super expensive coffee machines, how about doing it in the same way as that of a tap? Yes sir, you no longer need to shuffle bleary eyed into your kitchn each morning, getting your mornign glass of water from the sink, but rather, the Top Brewer will dispense of your favorite coffee into a mug of your choice. Let us see how it works in the extended post. Scanomat of Denmark is the one behind this unique coffee tap, where the Top Brewer will comprise of a tap which is able to simultaneously dispense up to a trio of different kinds of liquid (such as coffee and cream), where it will also run down to an aluminum-bodied brew unit which remains enclosed inside the Top Brewer cabinet. The brew unit will slide in and out for a jiffy refilling session, where dual grinders will get the job done for you inside, letting each cup of coffee be made from actual roasted beans. If you want filtered coffee, that is also not a problem, as it can be done at a rate of four cups each minute. As for other choices, they will comprise of espresso, cappuccino, macchiato, and latte. Apart from that, the system can also make steamed foam milk, located right in the tip of the tap, where it will automatically add to drinks when applicable.
