Green Power Island creates more land and energy Posted: 01 Jul 2011 02:58 PM PDT This Green Power Island is designed to combat two things that the Earth might be greatly lacking in the future: land and energy. The architectural firm of Gottlieb Paludan from Copenhagen created a serious combination of eco-friendly power with the wind turbines near the shore, not to mention all of the solar panels taking up the landmass. That’s pretty visible from this mock-up image, but what you don’t see is that the green space is for “biofuel crops”. Not only that, seawater is pumped into a lagoon-like reservoir, which is emptied by the turbine-powered pumps when it is low. These turbines also allow water to flow back into the reservoir during times when water is in demand. I’m sure that you can tell that Green Power Island is nothing more than a concept for now, and it would probably take millions to make it a reality. Still, if you had the money and the resources to create it, then you probably disprove the saying of “no man is an island”. Instead, you can say, “Dude, I’ve got biofuel crops and a bunch of renewable energy, and I am an island”. Villainous masterminds, I would definitely try and put a pre-order for one of these. Just make certain that you have enough power for your deathtraps around the perimeter. Check out the Coolest Gadgets 2008 Gift Guides, Christmas shopping made easy. Posted: 01 Jul 2011 02:23 PM PDT I’m sure that some of our readers are still dealing with the damage of the Tsunami that hit Japan. It is difficult to prepare for a catastrophe like that, but two Boeing engineers are working on a way with the Tsunami capsule. I realize that the picture here is a really bad mock-up, but you can see how it would work. It is essentially a 7-foot ball that is made for a family of six. These six people would strap themselves in at the first sign of a tsunami, which I am guessing is when the tide recedes. When the big wave strikes, what follows is probably one of the most thrilling and expensive amusement park rides ever. This ball will undoubtedly be crashing and bobbing up in the water, but it would eventually settle down. Engineers Julian Sharpe and Scott Hill actually conceived the idea of the Tsunami Escape Pod several years ago during a tsunami warning at Cannon Beach, Oregon. Their concept is currently under development after the unfortunate events in Japan. The plan is to have these Tsunami capsules hit the market in about two years for a price of about $1,000 each. I suppose we are looking forward to an era where all homes by the beach have one of these. Think of them as the fallout shelter for a potential Tsunami generation. Munich basketball court is in unnecessary 3D Posted: 01 Jul 2011 01:42 PM PDT Just so you know, you are seeing a basketball court, but this one is in 3D. As you have probably figured out, it is not NBA regulation. It is a regulation size, but some designer apparently had a lot of fun morphing it into a blob shape. If you want to see it for yourself, this orange-red tartan covered court is in Munich. My Source doesn’t seem to have any images of people actually playing B-ball on it, and I can imagine why. Can you imagine dribbling on a court like this one? All it would take is one bounce in the sloped areas, and that ball would fly out of bounds faster than you can say: “Michael Jordan”. Too bad the humps by the baskets aren’t larger, or players could do some serious slam dunks. Players might have a hard time avoiding those poles in the court, too. Just to let you know, those are lamps that illuminate at night. Putting one in the center is just plain bad layout if one wishes to use these for sport, which is why I am guessing that the designer just wanted to try something quirky. That, or he wanted to create something for skateboarders or rollerbladers. Coolest Gadgets UK – For all your UK centric tech and gadget news. Monopoly Banking brings the future to your living room Posted: 01 Jul 2011 09:06 AM PDT Do you love a good game of Monopoly? Well, for most of us, it is one of the rare moments in life to savor, as it is when you are able to actually pay for an entire house, or even hotel, with nothing but cold, hard cash. Yes sir, just flaunt all that wealth and hark back to the days when $100 actually meant something, and being a millionaire is nothing to sneeze at. Well, with the relentless attack of inflation as well as changing times, even the board game Monopoly needs to be revamped – hence the introduction of Monopoly Banking. No more paper notes in Monopoly Banking, as you will carry your very own debit card this time around. There’s also no need to count those small notes, as all you need to do is swipe your card (like in real life) and you’re good to go. As for the old school metal tokens, those have received an upgrade as well, riding on a skate board instead of a sports car, munching on a cheese burger while talking on your mobile phone. The price has remained pocket friendly though at just £29.99. Conference Calendar – The global conference and expo finder. Samsung invites travel weary gizmos to charge up Posted: 01 Jul 2011 06:00 AM PDT Modern day devices are able to perform a whole lot of tasks, but there is still one major drawback to think about – the lack of battery life. Yes sir, your smartphone might be able to help you arrive at an unfamiliar destination, check the weather, surf the Internet, reply your emails, perform your online shopping needs, but at a price of draining its battery before the day is over. Those who do plenty of traveling often have to juice up their devices the day before they fly, as only select flights come with a power outlet in economy class (First and Business class passengers need not worry), and sometimes, inter-continental flights might just push the boundaries of your device’s battery to the limit, especially when you’re bored with the in-flight movie catalogue. Samsung feels your pain, which is why they have installed 20 newly designed charging stations throughout the terminals at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA). DCA will be the first airport that sees these redesigned charging stations cater to travelers who need a place to conveniently charge their mobile phones, laptops and other personal electronics – for free, yo! With over 40 charging stations at Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD), you can be sure that having your flight make a transit at those airports would be a boon – not a bane. These redesigned Samsung Mobile charging stations will comprise of half a dozen electrical outlets that are compatible for U.S. voltage (i.e., 120 volts), two USB charging outlets, a quartet of micro USB mobile phone charging plugs and a touchscreen display which will offer travelers additional value through informational content such as news, weather and flight information. There is also a "What's New" tab that users can access to learn more about Samsung Mobile's latest devices. Apart from that, the charging stations will also boast of a small shelf that can your charging device – just make sure you keep a keen eye out lest someone with fast hands make a quick getaway of your favorite piece of portable consumer electronics. iPad speaker delivers sound the natural way Posted: 01 Jul 2011 05:39 AM PDT
Not so with this unique speaker which is totally natural and passive in nature. To make matters more interesting this speaker will be compatible with Apple’s hot selling iPad tablet device, helping it keep up with the times. Designer YellowGlueBlues is behind these wooden, iPhone and iPad speaker docks, where they are totally natural – meaning you won’t find any electronics or batteries inside. These passive speaker solutions will function by taking advantage of the laws of physics – through the channeling of sound from an iPhone or iPad's built-in speaker via resonant wood channels, resulting in a naturally amplified sound, which is totally different from what a megaphone does. What you see above ought to come in maple, cherry and walnut wood, with a price range of $50, going all the way to $60. The iPhone model will sport a couple of tunnels, whereby the designer claims they were precision drilled to create the best possible sonic result. As for the iPad version, you will find a solitary sound tunnel. No idea on whether the wood use is obtained from sustainable sources, but we don’t think they will sell as madly as other speakers in existence, so their impact on the environment ought to be negligible. Still, it would be nice to go to bed knowing that your latest speaker purchase is green in the large scheme of things. To alleviate your guilt, at least it doesn’t consume power. Just don’t expect heaven and earth to shake with these speaker docks, since only a moderate amount of amplification is in the works, and sound quality will be more or less on par with with that of an iPhone's speaker.
