Boeing teaches two UAVs to flock together

Posted: 24 Aug 2011 08:30 AM PDT

Boeing is always doing some interesting experiments with Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) before, and they have just created a new “milestone” with multiple unmanned aerial drones.

Granted, it was only two drones (Boeing ScanEagles), but the company got them to fly together. These vehicles searched a test area through “self-generating waypoints and terrain mapping, and sent information to teams on the ground”.

This means that unmanned aircraft can collect and use data while communicating with each other for their mission. I’m sure that you can easily imagine more than two aircraft involved in a search-and-rescue mission or perhaps a military invasion.

Are we looking at a future where swarms of these automated airplanes will be our advanced Air Force? Think of the scene in Independence Day where all those tiny fighters invaded that base. We could be those aliens!

Of course, I wonder how in the world we can get all those planes to work together so they don’t shoot down the wrong targets. Something tells me that this is going to be a whole new type of interface.

Then there is that scary situation where the whole army of robot planes turn on us. Think of the movie Stealth but with many planes instead of just one. I hope that someone isn’t taking that idea and making a sequel to that film, because it was horrible.

Anyway, we’ll see what Boeing is planning on doing as far as this new technology is concerned.

Zapparel augmented reality clothes

Posted: 24 Aug 2011 08:15 AM PDT

I have reported on a lot of terrific augmented reality stuff, and this Zapparel is something that is a long time coming.

This is the creation of Zappar and Hybrid Apparel, and there is a video after the jump so you can see how it works. I highly recommend watching it because it looks quite neat.

There are 20 different T-shirts, and there should be more coming out if this is a hit. I’m not certain whether or not people are willing to stand still while another scans them with an iPhone or Android device, but the video shows that the results are worth it!

You can see in the video that there is a space man with robot arms that shoots UFOs. If this is just what one design does, then I can’t wait to see what the other 19 do. What I don’t know is if the man wearing the Zapparel T-shirt has to stand there the whole time. If he walked away, would it be an instant game over?

Zapparel is planned to be launched exclusively at the International Fashion Expo, Magic in Las Vegas on August 22-24. The app is for free on the Android and iTunes marketplaces.

A Car Seat Rocker, courtesy of Ben Heck with Android ADK!

Posted: 24 Aug 2011 08:00 AM PDT

I’m sure that most of our readers are familiar with Ben Heck. If not, he is an online celebrity who is most famous for his mods, usually for video games.

Ben Heck recently took a request from a viewer to make a seat that will help rock his child to sleep. It will simulate the ride of a carseat in a car. Sometimes this helps a little one fall asleep, and I know this from experience.

Ben used the Google ADK (Accessory Development Kit) in order to take advantage of the built-in accelerometer to record the motions that the car goes through while it is driving. As user drives, the phone collects the code, and this data collected gets fed into the Android ADK. Ben tried this out on a scale model of a seat, but not a live one. You can click on the Source to see a video of it in action.

If Ben Heck wants to build an actual a seat that will help lull a baby to sleep, and create an app for it, then he will have some income if this seat is marketed just right. Perhaps Mr. Heck is working on that right now, or maybe he creates these mods for fun.

SOL REPUBLIC headphones caters for every need

Posted: 24 Aug 2011 06:00 AM PDT

Headphones are extremely personal, as nearly everyone has their own preference with regard to make and model. Do you go for a pair of over-the-ear headphones, or do you prefer something less “outstanding” such as the in-ear headphones? It really depends, and some of us might prefer to go for a water-resistant model since we tend to engage in rough and tumble activities. Well, SOL REPUBLIC has listened to their customers (potential or otherwise), having launched a range of on-ear and in-ear headphones.

SOL REPUBLIC is a music lifestyle company that has assembled an industry-leading team, having engaged top design houses to make sure every product that rolls off their production lines would be pleasing to the eyes. One of the more noticeable models would be the first interchangeable on-ear headphones that boast swappable headbands, speakers and cables in different colors, letting it match your very own style, music and desired performance.

Not only that, SOL REPUBLIC also addresses one of the most common consumer complaints associated with headphones – they break. Having said that, SOL REPUBLIC decided to conduct an extensive materials research in the quest to create Tracks, the ultimate on-ear headphone which is capable of withstanding just about any lifestyle. The result? A proprietary advanced new polymer known as FlexTech, which more or less makes Tracks indestructible. Bear in mind that this ain’t no adamantium, so that does not mean you can abuse it to the extreme such as firing a gun at the SOL REPUBLIC Tracks and not expecting it to walk away without a scratch.

Prices start from $59.99 onwards, where SOL REPUBLIC on-ear and in-ear headphones will come in both standard and HD flavors. Each pair of headphones will boast of its very own sound signature, a fashion-forward look as well as a remote and microphone. Time to start rockin’!

The Emotional Response Puppy

Posted: 24 Aug 2011 05:30 AM PDT

You know that some canines are just cut out for being therapy dogs, especially with their kind of temperament which just wants you to reach out and hug them. Well, for those who cannot afford a therapy dog or do not want to go through the daily routine of caring for one, there is always an “artificial” way of going around things – case in point, the $99.95 Emotional Response Puppy.

This plush puppy will actually mimic an actual canine’s behavior whenever it its touched or hears a sound, and good thing you need not feed it (apart from making sure it is juiced by a quartet of C batteries, of course) – and no feeding will translate to another important aspect; there is no need to bring it out for walks, poops, or bladder relieving sessions.

The puppy will come with sensors located in its paws, head and back – all well hidden underneath the soft, furry coat. Not only that, there is a built-in microphone that will trigger lifelike canine responses whenever you pat, tickle, stroke or hug it. Depending on how it actually perceives the particular touch or sound, it will open its mouth when panting or barking, heck it can even wiggle its ears, blink its eyes, or enthusiastically wag its tail.

The puppy’s actions will feature 18 lifelike sounds, ranging from a playful bark or a peevish grumble to a curious snuffle or a forlorn whimper. Seems like the perfect birthday present for your little one who has been bugging you to get a puppy?

Pac-Man Moneybox

Posted: 24 Aug 2011 05:00 AM PDT

Looking at the world’s economy, it makes perfect sense to start saving up from a young age. Well, what better way to make sure your little one is taught the value of saving up for a rainy day than to give him/her a coin box? The standard issue ones which you get from banks or the store are pretty boring, and they hardly respond – in fact, the best sound it makes would be when the porcelain porcine figure is smashed on the floor so that you can retrieve the fruit of your labor some time down the road.

Well, with the £14.99 Pac-Man Moneybox, things have changed – for the better, I might add. Who doesn’t know Pac-Man? This iconic arcade character from the 1980s is more than happy to have you drop your collection of loose change inside, where each coin dropped will see him respond his trademark “wakka-wakka” sound bite. All you need to do is make sure there aren’t any of those nasty ghosts around, waiting to swoop down on your coin collection when you’re not looking! Needless to say, make sure there are three AAA batteries inside if you want the Pac-Man Moneybox to respond accordingly.
