Jet Hitter floats the ball before you hit it

Posted: 22 Mar 2010 12:55 PM PDT

I’m sure some of you remember Tee-ball from grade school, but this Jet Hitter from Japan’s Meiji University takes Tee-ball to the next level, all the way up to the big leagues.

Meiji U teamed up with Sapporo-based MR Corp to make a machine that can hold a ball on air to create a hovering ball that a heavy hitter can hit very well. It is definitely baseball of the future, or at least baseball practice of the future.

This Jet Hitter machine can be loaded up with 70 balls, which has a very unique ability to load up into a weird snake-like tube beside the machine. I suppose they come out and rest on the air cushion somehow.

Now, you are probably wondering what the difference between this Jet Hitter and say, a pitching machine. Well, I would have to say that most automatic pitching machines don’t let the practicing player concentrate on the proper place on the bat to strike the ball. On an automatic pitching machine, it is difficult to concentrate as the ball is soaring through the air. Since the air cushion holds the ball in place, the batter can eventually learn where is the proper place to strike!

Well, I don’t see this device being available to the average consumer, but maybe the major ball clubs would be interested in them.

Nyko Energy Pak for the WiiFit Balance Board

Posted: 22 Mar 2010 12:20 PM PDT

Nyko is practically getting legendary with its gaming accessories, and they have turned their attention on a problem that I am familiar with: the batteries in the Wii Balance Board.

As an owner of one of these WiiFits, I can testify to how often these batteries in these Balance Boards wear out. They are worse than the batteries wearing out in the Wiimotes after hours of play. Since I tried out the Nyko Energy Pak, I don’t have that battery probably in my balance board anymore.

The Energy Pak is a Lithium-Ion powered battery pack that will fit directly into where the 4 AA batteries are kept. It can charge by hooking it up to an AC Port Relocator, and then hook that up with an AC outlet. Don’t ask me why they didn’t put the AC Port Relocator and AC outlet on one individual unit.

Anyway, the Energy Pak takes a few hours to recharge, and it is good for 30 hours worth of playing time. It has a charge indicator that is red when out of juice, yellow when almost charged, and (you guessed it) green when fully charged.

You should be able to get the Energy Pak from the Nyko Site for about $19.99. I believe that this is a small price to pay for the batteries that you would go through if you didn’t use it.

Hands on Review of the DXG-A80V

Posted: 22 Mar 2010 12:15 PM PDT

I have been reporting on DXG’s camcorders for quite a while, and I found them to be adequate for those who want to make funny YouTube videos, but they often fell short for resolution.

This is because many of them were 720p shooting, but the DXG-A80V is 1080p, and shoots very clear at 30fps. The user also has the option of switching to 1080i at 60fps.

The DXG-A80V is also can shoot digital stills at 10 megapixels. It can support high-capacity SD cars up to 16GB. It also has a “built-in Gyro sensor for electronic image stabilizer and 5X optical zoom”. All in all, I would have to say that the DXG-A80V is essentially your all purpose camera.

One the most interesting features is the touchscreen interface. It’s something that I haven’t seen on their earlier models, but I’m glad it is here. Another feature is the digital voice recording function for making instant to-do lists and such. That’s something else that I wished I would have seen on earlier camcorders, but couldn’t I just use the camera to film me reminding myself of something?

The camera comes with all you would expect, such as HDMI cable, USB cable, carrying case, sadly, no SD included. Too bad. Anyway, you should be able to get it on the DXG site for about $299.99.

Marvell to deliver new Moby tablet

Posted: 22 Mar 2010 08:33 AM PDT

Marvell also wants in on the budding tablet market, and has recently announced that they will be rolling out a brand new high performance mobile tablet which will be based on its leading silicon platform. Retailing for approximately $99, the Moby tablet prototype from Marvell is tipped to change the way students learn because it is capable of delivering an always-on, high performance multimedia tablet that boasts live, real-time content in 1080p full HD resolution and 3D media, and not to mention full Flash support when it comes to webpages on the Internet. Basically, Marvell is trying to position this tablet for students so that there will no longer be any need to purchase and tote around textbooks. After all, when was the last time you carried a school bag? Those stuff even come with rollers in selected countries simply because it could prove to be too heavy for a first grader to carry on his/her back.

The new Moby tablet will supposedly address a trio of important issues of today, with the first being printed textbooks being outdated the moment they are published. After all, don’t you think that an electronic version of the textbook which can be updated as well as refreshed as and when new information is available so much better? Here’s an interesting statistic according to the Government Accountability Office (GAO) – the average cost of a single textbook for even secondary school students can range from $60 to $200, and it can only go nowhere but up, making the $99 price point so much more appealing than ever.

As mentioned earlier, school bags are getting way too heavy for students, making neck and shoulder injuries from overweight backpacks being one of the fastest-growing health concerns for the world’s children. Since the Marvell Moby tablet is ultra thin and lightweight, it is capable of holding the entire year’s books with a weight of less than half that of a typical textbook. It is also interesting to note that Marvell is currently the largest sponsor of the One Laptop per Child program – perhaps they have found this to be a lucrative market to dive into? We can’t but wait to see just how the Moby will turn out – how about you? There are a few things that we do know about the Moby though, which would be it carrying a GHz-class processor speed, 1080p full-HD encode and decode, intelligent power management, power-efficient Wi-Fi/Bluetooth/FM/GPS connectivity, high performance 3D graphics capability and support for multiple software standards.
