Hands on with the Nyko Type Pad for the Wii Posted: 04 Jun 2010 08:59 PM PDT The Nyko Type Pad for the Wii addresses a problem that you may or may not have. If you have ever used your Wii to surf the Net with the Opera browser or the Wii friend messenger, then you know how annoying it is to type text with just a Wiimote. If you haven’t, this is what it is like: The keyboard appears on the screen, but you have to point at each individual letter, number, or symbol with the Wiimote. Yes, it is a mind-numbingly terrible toil. This is why Nyko invented the Type Pad, a fully QWERTY keyboard for the Wii. It is worth having for all sorts of Wii apps. For example, I use YouTube on the Wii a lot, and it is far easier to type in my searches with this Type Pad. As you can see from the picture, the Wiimote is designed to fit in the Type Pad and stays in by attaching with the port on the end. Unfortunately, having the Wiimote attached is not enough to get the Type Pad working. The user is required to attach a USB dongle to the Wii itself, and this is how it syncs with the console. The best part is that no batteries are required. It costs about $29.99, can be purchased now on the Nyko site. Day to Night Baby Log from Skip Hop Posted: 04 Jun 2010 04:24 PM PDT For some parents, they just have to log all the things the baby does in a baby book. I think we did that for our firstborn, but after the second, it sort of gets forgotten about. However, the Day to Night Baby Log is a baby book like no other. Not only is it set up for the parent to journal their baby’s activities, but it has a time capsule. Unfortunately, it is not the time capsule that you are thinking of. If you want to put the baby’s hair or teeth stashed somewhere, you’ll need something else for that. This is a capsule that is housed in the spine of the book, and it has four LED lights for illuminating the pages. I believe that the LED lights are for nights when you want to write without turning on the light and waking the baby. It also has an LCD clock and timer, so you will always know what time it was when the baby did…whatever. The time capsule also has a timer. I’m not certain what you can do with this, except time certain activities that the baby does. Anyway, you should be able to get this Day to Night Baby Log with its spotted cover for $39.00 on the Skip Hop site. Coolest Gadgets UK – For all your UK centric tech and gadget news. EQP2 Excursion is one light electric plane Posted: 04 Jun 2010 03:54 PM PDT Sometime, in the year 2013, when we have realized that that whole 2012 end-of-the-world thing was just another Y2K, we will (hopefully) see the EQP2 Excursion. The Excursion is a Light Sport Aircraft (LST) that has enough space for two people and baggage. You may note that it has two propellers on its tail, but what you don’t know is that is completely electrical. Yeah, there is no expensive jet fuel in this thing. The plane itself is less than 20 feet long, and can fly at speeds of 250 miles per hour for about 1,265 miles on a single charge. It kind of reminds me of this plane that the Roger Moore James Bond flew in Octopussy. It was during the opening part of the film that pretty much has nothing to do with the rest of the film. As I recall, Bond’s joke before the sexy credits was pulling into a gas station with his mini-plane and saying “fill ‘er up”. I suppose he would probably say “charge it up” if he was flying the EQP2. I suppose I will look forward to seeing this plane in the next three years, assuming the designers keep to their timetable. Of course, they don’t know exactly what will power this aircraft as yet. Hypospray from Star Trek is real, but with lasers Posted: 04 Jun 2010 03:17 PM PDT Nothing I like reporting more than reporting on tech from science-fiction that becomes science fact. Especially when it comes to Star Trek, the original series. Sure the original series just looks bad if you watch it now, and we still haven’t got most of that technology. Sure, most of our cellular phones look like James T. Kirk’s communicator, but as far as hypodermics are concerned, there are still needles. Not like Dr. McCoy’s spray vaccinations that we would like to see being used today. Until now, at least. In fact, this particular needle-less hypos use phasers! Actually, it doesn’t, but it it does use lasers. These lasers bore holes so tiny that you won’t even feel it go through the skin and cure your diseases. This is the painless epidermal system, other wise abbreviated to PLEASE. Yes, it isn’t a perfect acronym, but hey, do we need one? After all, wouldn’t injections without needles please everyone? After all, I remember taking my newborn daughter to a routine checkup, and it was like a stab-fest. Best of all, there isn’t that weird spraying sound that comes from using those Star Trek hyposprays. Yep, apparently the use of lasers means that there is no noise. I wonder if you can give the hypospray injections through uniforms. It never made sense how they could do that. Coolest Gadgets UK – For all your UK centric tech and gadget news. Aerial Camera to mount on RC planes Posted: 04 Jun 2010 11:48 AM PDT Instead of purchasing an expensive toy plane or helicopter with a camera already built into it, you could buy a camera seperate. That way you could just pop it onto your favorite RC aircraft instead of having to replace it with something completely new. Also if you happen to crash the plane you’re more likely to have to replace either the plane or the camera rather than the whole thing. The lightweight camera takes video at 640 by 480 pixels at 25 fps. While it’s taking that video the battery can keep it up and going for right around 1.5 hours. Now if you happen to be taking pictures instead, the resolution is at 1280 by 960, that’s quite a bit better than when it’s shooting video. You can manually move the lens itself to get the right angle you desire before the plane takes off. You can purchase the 2GB camera for $48 through Chinavasion. Posted: 04 Jun 2010 11:00 AM PDT The iPad being the newest obsession for many will need all of the random accessories that the rest of the Apple products have received. Those of you that like to be around a whole lot of water might want to consider picking up this case. It’ll make sure you have full use of your iPad, but it will also make sure that it stays completely dry. The case even has an incredibly attractive strap that can be used to make the iPad hang from your neck. I’m sure you’ll pick up even potential partners if you hang this around your neck while you’re wearing a bathing suit at your local pool. Of course should you want to make that particular fashion statement, you might have a little bit of a hard time getting one of these since it comes from a Japanese site. If you’re feeling lucky though, it costs about $38. Posted: 04 Jun 2010 10:15 AM PDT These appear to be massive thumping speakers, when in reality they are much different. Instead of being the source of all of that noise, they’re actually what keeps it controlled. Everyone enjoys the occasional loud night, but if you live in an apartment or duplex you usually don’t get to have those nights. That is unless you want your neighbor pounding on your walls every two minutes and finally having the cops show up on your doorstep after you’ve refused to turn it down. If you want to avoid those sorts of troubles, I’d suggest picking these up. You can purchase these in pieces and create your own pattern. That also means you can use as much or as little as you think you’ll require. If the walls are just a little thin and you like your TV just a little loud you won’t need near as many as someone who just prefers throwing keggers every single Friday. You can purchase one of the Typhonics SP Tiles for $54 a piece. Source: Newlaunches Coolest Gadgets UK – For all your UK centric tech and gadget news. Posted: 04 Jun 2010 06:00 AM PDT Love the game of golf? Well, for folks who are aboslutely enamoured with this sport will definitely have a great love of their golf bag as well (or bags for the real fanatic). To make sure that nobody tampers with your golf bag whenever you are not around, how about investing $49.95 in the Golf Bag Alarm System? This unique device comprises of a motion sensing radio transmitter that doubles up as a golf ball, alongside a key fob radio receiver. The ball will naturally reside in your golf bag while you carry around the key fob. Should the ball detect substantial movement, it will emit a shrill alarm while sending a signal to the receiver which beeps and vibrates. Not only that, even if someone silently drags the bag away with minimal motion, should it be separated by more than 30 yards from the key fob, the alarm will also sound. Swimways Submergency adds more fun during summer frolic Posted: 03 Jun 2010 07:45 PM PDT Hoping to get a water baby? Well, you will be pleased to note that the Swimways Submergency is a device which will encourage underwater play among kids (and adults who are adventurous enough, of course). Throw this into the pool and let the little ones attempt to dive and search for the Submergency underwater. Whoever finds it can deactivate it for added excitement in underwater play, and it works with adjustable depth technology as well, letting you choose to have the Submergency float, sink or even remain suspended somewhere in the middle if that is your wise. The LED timer can be adjusted to time out anywhere from 15 seconds to one and a half minutes, enough to pose a challenge for just about everybody. Fancy forking out $15.95 for this puppy? Hitachi rocks the market with Z-Series Family hard drive Posted: 03 Jun 2010 07:23 PM PDT
The whole Hitachi Z-series family of drives will come in varying capacities, maxing out at 320GB, which in the process makes them the industry's highest capacity 7mm 2.5″ drive in a one-disk design. For the Travelstar Z7K320 drive, this is touted to be the first 7200 RPM, 7mm 2.5″ drive for high-performance compact systems and devices in the world. It has been specially optimized for audio/video (A/V) devices including personal video recorders (PVR) and set-top-boxes (STB). For those who have a penchant for security, there is also an optional self encrypting drive (SED) model that helps protect your precious data within, while an enhanced-availability (EA) model will target applications that require around-the-clock data access in lower-transaction environments. When you think about it, the cost per gigabyte and gigabyte per cubic millimeter (GB/mm3) factor makes Hitachi’s 7mm drives the most cost-effective and space-efficient storage solutions when placed alongside solid state drives (SSD), 2.5″ 9.5 mm and 1.8″ hard drives, making them a suitable candidate that offers a compelling value proposition for OEMs and system integrators. You will be able to pick up the new Hitachi Z-series family in 160GB, 250GB and 320GB capacities with volume shipments ready to rock the market later this year. Guess we can look forward to newer devices, especially portable media players that are slimmer than ever, eh? SanDisk ready to roll out new Solid State Drives Posted: 03 Jun 2010 07:15 PM PDT
The new drives are touted to offer a unique balance of performance, high-capacity storage and long-term reliability. For the SanDisk SSD P4, it will max out at 128GB of storage space, while the SanDisk SSD G4 has a maximum capacity of double that amount – we’re talking about a cool 256GB here. Either way, the capacities stated are double those of the company's previous SSD offerings which goes to say how serious SanDisk is in rolling out the next generation of consumer level SSDs. These drives can ship in a variety of compact form factors, which SanDisk is able to customize according to manufacturers' specification, resulting in greater freedom and flexibility where OEMs are concerned when it comes to designing their products. These SSDs will use SanDisk's advanced 32-nanometer (nm) multi-level cell (MLC) process technology that offers cost-competitive high-capacity storage with a tiny footprint. The SanDisk G4 will come in capacities from as small as 64GB all the way to the aforementioned 256GB, where it offers sequential read/write speeds of up to 220 and 160MB/sec, respectively. With those figures, you will be able to enjoy fast boot times, enhanced system responsiveness and space needed to easily handle storage-intensive data such as videos, photos, music and games. Not only that, the SanDisk SSD G4 offers Long-term Data Endurance (LDE) of 160 terabytes written (TBW) for a 256GB drive, which is suitable for over 10 years of PC usage (we’re talking about an average figure here), so make sure you migrate all of your data to a new platform before changing your computer just to be safe. Expect both drives to hit the consumer market in various devices sometime before the year is over. Check out the Coolest Gadgets 2008 Gift Guides, Christmas shopping made easy. Car-shaped house is unusual, but quite energy-efficient Posted: 03 Jun 2010 06:47 PM PDT Okay, just picture having this house in your neighborhood. Chances are, the guy living in it would probably be someone that most would avoid, because he is, after all, living out of his car. That’s only because must suburbanites are too judgmental. If they really got to know this house, then they would see that it uses a “a ‘3 liter’ energy-efficient heating and insulation technique that optimizes all current building technologies, drastically reducing energy consumption.”‘ In other words, this is one car that is actually good for the environment. I’m not certain if it is as good as those houses that Ed Begley Junior builds, but if you don’t need that much space for living, then you might as well live in a giant, energy-conscious Volkswagen Beetle. This house is designed by a German architect named Markus Voglreiter, and this looks more like a mock-up than the actual thing. I wonder if he is going to live in it, or is he designing it for a famous German environmentalist or something. By the way, the wheels are just for show. This is one car that will always be parked somewhere, but it looks like it would be difficult to show snow off of its fenders. Robot Fish could help steer fish schools Posted: 03 Jun 2010 06:34 PM PDT The other day, I was watching the news about the oil spill in the Gulf, and I had heard that a pelican had been saved. Apparently, the Pelican went in the spill to catch a fish, but a team managed to clean him off. My first reaction was: “Man, why did that pelican go into the oil-infested waters for that fish?” Yes, there are more fish in the sea, but then again, it isn’t the pelican’s fault that we polluted his normal fishing waters. Hopefully, we will make certain that there will be less polluted waters, but right now, research is underway to steer fish away from those infected areas. Professor Maurizio Porfiri of the Polytechnic Institute of New York University is working on that robotic fish that could be able to lead a whole school of fish away from polluted, infected, or otherwise dangerous waters. Right now, this fish can only do a straight line, but if it is eventually capable of leading a bunch of fish, then it could be applied to a robotic bird. Then we can lead birds away from polluted areas. Perhaps this professor should check out the Mecha Fish that we reported on about a week ago. It almost looks like the robo-fish is a complete success!
