Pain Relieving Neuromuscular Stimulator System

Posted: 20 Nov 2010 03:12 PM PST

While pain is something most of us would try to avoid, it is there in our body for one reason – to function as a warning system so that we won’t be so naive as to sit on a bed of nails, or to keep on holding to a boiling kettle. While that’s the body’s natural response against danger, there are times when experiencing pain is a byproduct of our sickness, and fighting that could get weary especially if it has been going on for years. For folks who do not want to go through the ritual of relying on drugs to numb the pain, there might be a light at the end of the tunnel with the Pain Relieving Neuromuscular Stimulator System. This cordless home electrotherapy system is touted to deliver hours of drug-free pain relief without requiring a visit to a doctor, although its effectiveness is up to debate – any of our readers have used this $129.95 device to great effect?

Using the Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS) therapy, it relies on self-adhesive electrode pads being placed on sore spots, where they will then send harmless low-frequency electrical pulses into the tissue that block pain signals passing through nerves to the brain. Not only that, the system will help increase blood flow to the area to promote healing, while generating a sense of relaxation which is somewhat akin to what a massage does to you. The American Physical Therapy Association claims that TENS therapy is an effective element of pain management for low-intensity discomfort, including back pain and muscle soreness in the extremities. Sounds like a good buy for the older generation this Christmas?

Dalek Keychain Torch

Posted: 20 Nov 2010 03:01 PM PST

A fan of Doctor Who? If the answer is in the affirmative, I would dare so much as to venture that you have a soft spot for Daleks, the cute looking robot. When you shrink it down to a keychain size, however, it ups the cuteness ante, resulting in the Dalek Keychain Torch. While it won’t break the bank at £6.99 a pop, it will definitely make your fellow Doctor Who fans drool over your latest purchase. Not only does this Dalek hold your bunch of keys together, it also has some sort of R2-D2-sque feel to it, as it sports a super bright LED light that would definitely come in handy during an emergency, especially for ladies who want to rummage through their handbags while they’re in the cinema without disturbing anyone else within the vicinity.

LOCAMODA – Social Networking Goes Public

Posted: 20 Nov 2010 11:06 AM PST

I guess it's no surprise to anyone that I go out a lot. I eat most of my meals somewhere other than home. A new fixture in a lot of restaurants these days are flat panels with local advertising. I try to ignore these screens as much as possible. They are boring, redundant and lose my attention way too quickly than the money spent on them probably deserves.

But somebody got my attention, LocaModa, a location based, interactive social media platform that allows cellphone users to broadcast to, and interact with video screens set up wherever folks gather. Everyone wants their 15 minutes of fame, and being able to post your thoughts and pictures to a big screen being viewed by the masses seems to be a major draw.

LocaModa allows the provider of its services to offer their customers any combination of applications that suit their needs. Available from LocaModa's app store, a business owner can select from interactive games, text to screen applications offering real time display, a corkboard that allows patrons to post local for sale or trade ads, the posting of photos to screen and a variety of polls and social networking displays.

The platform is engaging to say the least and you'll likely be seeing it soon, somewhere near you. So smile, and make yourself famous.

iSi Twist’n Sparkle – Because everything’s better with bubbles.

Posted: 20 Nov 2010 10:04 AM PST

I love soda. Plain and simple, my love affair with bubbly things began at a very young age and I know I drink more than I should. A while ago I got what I thought was the perfect gift, a water carbonator. Oh how excited I was, until I got bored, and decided, why not carbonate some grape juice? Ah what a lesson that was, and such a lasting memory too.. as no amount of paint seems to cover the purple stains on the ceiling.

If only I had read the instructions that implored me NOT to carbonate anything other than water. So I guess my dream of a carbonated lemonade was never meant to be, until now.

The iSi Twist'n Sparkle adds some effervescence to almost any beverage, safely and without the need of ceiling paint. Easy to use, the Twist'n Sparkle comes with a bottle, a wand, a recipe book and 3 single use CO2 chargers. You need only fill the bottle with pulp free juices, wine, Mojitos, iced coffee or almost any other cold beverage, insert the wand and twist the top to carbonate.

I love the versatility, I love not having to lug cans and bottles from the store.. but most of all I love wine spritzers that are all wine. $49.95

Flipper Frenzy from Wild Planet Games

Posted: 19 Nov 2010 10:03 PM PST

I might as well admit it and say that there isn’t that much difference between Flipper Frenzy and the Hyper Dash Extreme game that I reported on the other day.

They are both made by the same company, and the same basic principle is the same. Each game has a unit that can give vocal command in order to grab specific objects.

In the case of Flipper Frenzy, it has four “friendly sea creatures” including a seahorse, octopus, turtle, and fish. The difference is that the unit is a shark with a jaw that opens and shuts with the touch of a trigger button. As you might have guessed, the point of the game is have the shark chomp the proper sea creature when it calls it out by name.

There are also some bonus games, such as Sharky says. You can probably guess what the point of that game is: don’t chomp the creature if it doesn’t say “Sharky says”. Another game is Hide and Seek, where one player hides the sea creatures while another chomps them out. They have to be chomped in a particular order, though.

I recommend this game as a possible gift for younger players. It can be purchased from the Wild Planet website for a price of $24.95.

iFrogz Mogul Headphones

Posted: 19 Nov 2010 09:47 PM PST

I’ve reviewed iFrogz headphones before, such as the CS40. I’ve recently had a chance to check out the Mogul from the company.

As far as their basic look, there isn’t much to differ the Mogul from the CS40, at least in the earpieces section. They can even fold up conveniently, too.

The Mogul has 50 mm speaker drivers with “super-deep bass” plus “smooth, undistorted highs, and clear vocals”.

I’ve found that any headphones that have this old-school seventies cushioned designed tends to bring pain to my ears after having them on my head for extended periods of time. This was the case after having these on my head for about eight hours. The lesson to learn here is not to avoid the Mogul, but not to keep any of this type of headphones on for too long a time.

If you want these earphones, you should be able to purchase them on the iFrogz site for about $69.99 in black, red, or white. You might want to ignore the statements about living in India, because they don’t really make much sense unless you know a little Indian history. Apparently, a Mogul is a member of the ruling dynasty.

What doesn’t make sense is this phrase on the product page: “Mai bahadur aur nadir hewn”. I did a Google search of it, and all I found was links back to the iFrogz Mogul product page. Anyone know what it really means? Leave a comment if you do.

My Review of the Spy Video TRAKR

Posted: 19 Nov 2010 09:20 PM PST

We have mentioned the Spy Video TRAKR before, and I had a chance to try out the Spy Video Car that Wild Planet put out several years ago. The basic concept is the same: put a camera on a remote control vehicle, and allow the user to see the video feed from a distance.

The Spy Video Car had four wheels and a hands-free glasses display that was black-and-white. The Spy Video TRAKR has two treads and the display is on the controller.

The TRAKR also has some other updates. It can actually record video with 8MB of onboard RAM or on an SD card. The camera is also able to see in the dark, and the user can transmit their voice from the controller to the rover like a walkie-talkie. Another bonus is the “Cyber mode”, allowing the TRAKR to “memorize and retrace mission routes”.

Another big bonus is its ability to do apps. There is a USB port on the TRAKR that can link to a computer for downloading. More tech-savvy users can write applications in C programming and upload them to share.

All in all, this is one cool toy that would look good going around the Christmas tree, and can be purchased on the Wild Planet site for $129.95.

Blue Microphones Mikey 2.0

Posted: 19 Nov 2010 08:56 PM PST

I first encountered the Mikey at CES 2009, and the first version was a handy microphone made to plug into the charging port end of an iPod.

They have since come out with the Mikey 2.0, which is made for the iPhone and iPod Touch. I happen to have the latter, and I found that Mikey 2.0 works as well as the original.

For those who are not aware, the iPod Touch comes with a voice recorder, but an external mic is required for earlier generations of it. Unfortunately, the Voice recording app is pretty poor and records in mono. Fortunately, Blue Microphones has a free App known as Blue FiRe, which can record audio in CD quality, and is very easy to use.

For some reason, Mikey 2.0 is more curvaceous and less angular than its predecessor, and it can bend in 7 angle adjustments “for any environment”. I’m not sure how many angles the first version could do, but the 3 gain settings have been effectively passed on to version 2.0.

All in all, Mikey 2.0 is a very advanced external microphone, and if you are looking for something to record lectures, concerts, voice memos, interviews, or audio journaling, you should get it. It is available on Amazon for an affordable price of $73.39.
