Vivitar 690HD Digital Video Recorder

Posted: 10 Aug 2011 08:30 AM PDT

Vivitar calls its 690HD camera a DVR. This is an abbreviation for Digital Video Recorder, but it has nothing to do with what your TiVo does.

The Vivitar 609HD is a handheld camera that looks like it should be held horizontally, but it is best used vertically as the user can see the 2-inch preview screen.

I got a chance to try it out, and the video is good for 1280 x 720 HD, 640 x 480 VGA, or 320 x 240 QVGA. The frame-rate is good for 25fps, 30fps, and 30fps, respectively. The camera is also capable of still shots, but I don’t have any word on the number of Megapixels.

The 690HD has very little built-in memory (8MB), but it can support an SDcard of up to 32GB. The SDcard is not included, but it does come with an AV Cable for watching the footage on your TV.

One major feature of the 690 DVR camera by Vivitar is that it is waterproof up to 10 feet. The packaging has scuba divers on it, which leads me to believe that this camera is marketed to the rugged extreme crowd.

Other features include anti-shake and face detection. You should be able to purchase it for about $59.99, and you can find out more information about it here.

Date-rape detection device can save you from a regrettable evening

Posted: 10 Aug 2011 08:15 AM PDT

I’m not the kind that is a part of the nightlife, so to speak, but I am aware of date-rape drugs like Rohypnol or “roofies”.

I would hate to be one to wake up from my bed with no memory of what I had done the following night, but know that I was violated. If something could prevent that, it is worth having around. Two scientists at Tel Aviv University school of chemistry claim that they have a sensor that can detect the most common date-rape drugs even though they are colorless, odorless, and tasteless.

This sensor looks like a straw or swizzle stick, and it sucks up a small sample of the drink in order to mix it with a testing solution. Like litmus paper, this detector changes color in the presence of GHB (gamma-hydroxybutyric acid), ketamine, at a success rate of 100 percent.

The scientists are trying to get it to work with Rohypnol, and they even want the sensor to be electronic, with a warning light of some type. They even want it so the detector could send a message to the user’s cellular phone, so the potential victim can be warned in secret.

Can you imagine the look on the perpetrator when he is discovered that his date-rape drug attempt has failed? Just imagine what kind of lies that this idiot would say. Think of the best episode of “To Catch a Predator”.

Saudi Arabia prepares world’s largest skyscraper, Kingdom Tower

Posted: 10 Aug 2011 08:00 AM PDT

In case you have wondering if we will ever live in the cities of towers that we have seen in science-fiction, the Kingdom Tower should seal the deal.

The Kingdom Tower will be built in Saudi Arabia, in Jeddah, a port city by the Red Sea that is often considered the “gateway to Mecca”. When it is completed, Kingdom Tower will stand at 3,281 feet tall, which is 568 feet taller than Dubai’s Burj Khalifa, the world’s current largest building. At one point, the designers wanted Kingdom Tower to rise a mile high, but soil testing revealed that it wasn’t a good idea.

As you can see from the CG images, it will have an impressive “sky terrace” located on the 157th floor that looks like a landing pad for futuristic flying vehicles. Also within this massive mega-skyscraper will be a Four Seasons hotel, upscale office space, luxury condos, and 59 elevators. These elevators will travel at a fast speed of 33 feet per second (22 miles an hour).

All this for a price of 20 billion. I wonder how long it will take before giant-sized buildings like Kingdom Tower will be normal-sized. If we really want to make mile-high towers, then mega-skyscrapers like Kingdom Tower, the Sears Tower, and others of its type today will look like shrimps in the future.

Xploderz X Stormer 575

Posted: 10 Aug 2011 06:30 AM PDT

Summer’s nearly over for folks living in the northern hemisphere, maybe you might want to spend whatever precious little time you have left outdoors with the Xploderz X Stormer 575 – after handing over £31.99 for it, of course. This model will deliver the paintball experience right in the comfort of your backyard without the mess or pain which you will inevitably receive from the actual (painful) paintball scenario.

This is just like a toy gun in many ways, and yet so much more. Capable of firing up to 75 feet away, the Xploderz X Stormer 575 is the perfect tool to take long shots at your target – so much so that your ‘enemy’ would be caught by surprise since they would not think that you have the necessary arsenal to get the job done. It does so as long as you pull back the arm and release it to fire. Each ammo clip holds 500 Xploderz that are made out of a water-based gel which will shatter on impact, leaving no mess behind – after the water-based gel evaporates, of course.

Mario 3DS Holder

Posted: 10 Aug 2011 06:00 AM PDT

The Nintendo 3DS isn’t exactly doing as well as Nintendo hopes it would – and even after going through a recent price slash to just $169.99 a pop, it had failed to pick up in terms of sales. Well, let’s just say you recently purchased it after the price cut, what do you want to do with your savings? You could always spend the $34.99 for the Mario 3DS Holder – where it is represented by a 12″ vinyl Mario figure who stands atop a black base, with arms outstretched, ready and waiting to cradle your precious 3DS in them.

Of course, Mario being Mario, is big hearted enough to accommodate the Nintendo DSi or DS Lite, too. This is one suspended animation Mario who will remain there in position perpetually, never letting your 3DS go even if the entire world turns its back on it. You can be sure that he won’t suffer from a bad case of butter fingers, too, but boy will he burn with envy if you leave the 3DS gathering dust in his arms while you enjoy your PS Vita this Christmas.

MyGoFlight announced iPad Sport series

Posted: 10 Aug 2011 05:30 AM PDT

Have you heard of MyGoFlight before? Neither have I, but the good thing about it is this – I now have, and soon, you will, too. MyGoFlight is actually a company that is focused on the iPad In Motion for aviators, and they have just rolled out the iPad Sport series for both kneeboard and cockpit-mounted uses. This particular device will enhance a product line which already comprises of the iPad Kneeboard Pro, external GPS devices, iPad Flight Bags, and accessories including in-flight power adapters, anti-glare screen protection, night vision pens, RAM mounts and other similar items.

According to Charles Schneider, CEO of MyGoFlight, “The iPad Kneeboard Pro was launched last year and has been very successful. However, some pilots expressed the need for a case that could be used in aircraft where space was tight or on a mount. The Sport case is for those looking for maximum utility in the least amount of space, quick-connects to RAM mounts, works with Apple’s Smart Cover (iPad 2) and is very ‘Apple cool’ for use as an everyday case in and out of the airplane.”

Looks like pilots have something that they will be able to make full use of now, eh, especially for those captains who are in charge of trans-continental flights, and have seen all the in-flight movies for the umpteenth time that they might just want to see what else their tablets can provide instead. After all, what makes the iPad Kneeboard Sport so special is this – it was designed by pilots for pilots.

It will function in aircraft where there is a cyclic or control stick used between the legs, or whenever there is very little room to move around. the iPad Kneeboard Pro will play nice in just about all and any aircraft, and is also ideal for helicopters and other sport aircraft – basically fitting in to a T whenever there is tight yoke clearance. It can also be used with a RAM mount that is secured directly to the airplane.

Seems to tie in perfectly with the FAA issued guidance (InFO 11011) earlier this year in May, where it defines the iPad as an Electronic Flight Bag (EFB) device and as a substitute for carrying paper.

Vizio does tablets with 8″ model

Posted: 10 Aug 2011 05:00 AM PDT

Vizio, the company that is famous for its range of budget-friendly HDTVs, has decided to dip their fingers in something very, very different – we are talking about a tablet here. Yes sir, the number 1 LCD HDTV company in the US has just announced their latest Vizio 8″ tablet (there is no proper name to it, can you believe that?) which will retail for a mere $299 a pop, making it far cheaper than the other tablets in the market.

Of course, it goes without saying that tablets from Apple, Motorola and other manufacturers which cost far more than Vizio’s model does have value in the extra dollars you fork out – those come with superior hardware, but just what can you expect from a sub-$300 tablet? Find out after the jump.

This particular tablet will sport Vizio Internet Apps Plus that merges the latest technologies with a unified, easy-to-use and fun user interface which will work in tandem with upcoming Vizio HDTVs, Blu-ray players and other devices. Not only that, you will be able to use this new tablet to control just about every element of a user’s home theater via a universal remote app – so you need not consider forking out another couple hundred dollars for a high-tech universal remote control for the living room.

Other hardware specifications include Wi-Fi connectivity to make sure you can take advantage of Wi-Fi hotspots where available, although the lack of 3G support means you cannot remain connected anytime, anywhere – on the bright side, at least that helps you save battery life, and you need not worry about supporting another monthly data plan on your budget which is already bursting at its seams. There is also a built-in HDMI port with HDCP support for content protected HD playback on a big screen TV. Seems to be the perfect model if you want to introduce someone to the world of tablets.
