iDo iPhone case and Amp

Posted: 08 Sep 2011 11:23 AM PDT

Today, I discovered two products, both are called iDo. I find several weird coincidences about them that I will go into detail about later.

The first is the Icon iDo, an amp that plugs into an iDevice, and the user plugs this amp into a stereo system. The end result is to produce some very terrific quality sound, much better than the iPhone’s external speakers. You can even plug headphones into the Icon iDo and will optimize headphone audio quality.

You have to be pretty committed to your iPhone to get an amp like this. Speaking of committed, you can “marry” your iPhone with this iDo iPhone 4 case. The case has a ring that will grasp your finger so you don’t drop your iPhone. By the way, the ring acts as a 360-degree kickstand to prop up the phone vertically and horizontally. See the photo after the jump.

I thought these iDo were the same product at first, but the iDo iPhone case is from Rampant Innovations, when the iDo amp is by Icon. I guess there isn’t really a way to trademark “iDo”. That would mean couples would have to pay more for weddings.

You can see the coincidence with the name iDo. Now here is another coincidence. The price of the Icon iDo is $250, but the ring iDo is ten times less at $25.

First man-made electric helicopter constructed by Frenchmen

Posted: 08 Sep 2011 10:37 AM PDT

A while ago, I remember covering an inspirational story about a Chinese man who builds his own helicopter. I am just as inspired by Pascal Chretien, a French man who has created the first fully electric helicopter.

Mr. Chretien does not work for any big company, he is an electronics and aerospace engineer who practically built this craft single-handed. Considering that the big helicopter company Sikorsky has been trying to perfect their own electric helicopter known as the Firefly for years, Mr. Chretien’s accomplishment is quite impressive.

Yes, Chretien’s flew only three feet off the ground for two minutes and 10 seconds. Like most great feats of aviation, giant steps are often small ones. Think about the Wright Brothers’s 100-foot flight.

Chretien’s helicopter uses ultra light construction, as well as the coaxial design of two counter-rotating rotors. You will notice that there is no tail rotor like on traditional helicopters and has a simple weight shifting system which makes the aircraft hard to control. In fact, Chretien’s first flight was quite dangerous, but he finished his flight with power to spare. My Source does not say how much battery power was left.

I hope that Chretien perfects his process and we have greener helicopters. I also hope that Mr. Chretien is compensated for his hard work. I have often stated that it is the inventor and not the big company who truly innovates.

Would you buy a phone like this? Samsung hopes so.

Posted: 08 Sep 2011 09:46 AM PDT

What you are looking at in this picture is not a phone that is on the market today, but really should be. It is a concept phone by a designer named Heyon You for Samsung.

It is made from two AMOLED panels, a protective glasses cover, module case, and silicone rubber. It also has a foldable display, which is not new technology in the sense that someone has done it before. I’ve been hearing about foldable and rollable displays since I started reporting about tech 5 years ago.

I always thought that whoever gets their hands on the flexible display could make a killing, but they would have to work well. Samsung has stated that this bendable display can take a punishment of 100,000 folds before a six percent decrease in brightness along the seam.

My Source describes this phone as a clam-shell/candy-bar hybrid. It also suggested that a folded screen can display information like time, missed calls, text messages, and other quick info that my old clamshell phone displayed. When the phone is opened, the user can have access to all the apps.

I am all for that. Personally, I think that our phones have screens that are too small for what they can do. Just imagine a smartphone that can unfold into a tablet. Oh, the possibilities are endless.

Click and Grow computerized plantpot

Posted: 08 Sep 2011 06:30 AM PDT

For the life of some of us, we can’t quite figure out how come we were born without green fingers, or if you’re a Smurf, you might say “blue fingers”. Well, if that is the case, you might want to give planting your crop of choice one last go after trying out all sorts of methods and devices – with the £49.99 Click and Grow computerized plantpot, of course. Where all else fails, why not take a more scientific and measured approach which might just work?

This is no ordinary plantpont, as it will not require you to water your plants or be involved in other forms of additional care. The seeds within are actually surrounded by internal sensors, while a microprocessor will work hard to figure out just what the plant needs and how much, using a specially written software. Even better is you need not purchase some top soil to get it all mucked up, but on the downside, that means earthworms won’t have a home.

All you need are a quartet of AA batteries, some water when required, and hopefully the plant inside will start to grow well enough without dying on you. With a status light to guide you (Green = ok, Blue = needs water, Red = replace batteries) on what to do, you won’t go wrong with the Click and Grow.

Spy sunglasses with remote

Posted: 08 Sep 2011 06:00 AM PDT

With the advent of the Internet, there has been far more user generated content than ever before, and the proliferation of cameras in cell phones have also aided the growth of sites like YouTube, where you get to capture unique moments on the spot. Well, if you want to participate in something more covert, it is going to take more than just a regular digital camera or camcorder – you would need a disguised option, and we would think the £59.99 Spy sunglasses fits the bill perfectly.

To make sure your “mission” to record a particular tryst from a table away without looking too suspicious, the manufacturer has thrown in a remote control into the mix – this means you can always place your sunglasses facing your subject, pretend to read a newspaper and use the remote to begin your recording process. It will be able to perform recordings in VGA quality (640 x 480), or if you want more detail at the expense of shorter clips, then you can always select the higher 1,280 x 960 resolution count.

It takes a single charge to deliver 1.5 hours’ worth of recording. When done, just transfer your video onto a PC via USB, and you’re good and ready to go out for the next round of spying. Good thing the design does not look dated at all, otherwise it would have been a hard sell.

G-Form keeps your tablet safer with Extreme Edge

Posted: 08 Sep 2011 05:00 AM PDT

When it comes to purchasing a tablet, you will need to take into consideration one major factor – that is, to pick up a protective sleeve or case. After all, it makes perfect sense especially after you have just dropped some serious coin to the tune of half a grand, so why not top it all up with another 10% or 20% more cash by keeping said tablet company with a new protective case? That is what G-Form had in mind when they delivered the Extreme Edge sleeve which will weigh no more than 6 ounces, and it will not only have an iPad fit into it snugly, but also other electronic tablets that are 10″ in size.

To make sure your tablet in the Extreme Edge remains well protected, G-Form has enlisted the help of their very own remarkable RPT (Reactive Protection Technology), where this revolutionary material is actually a composite, blending PORON XRD material with other proprietary “ingredients”, allowing it to absorb more than 90% of the energy generated during an impact – while stiffening like a dead man momentarily in order to function as some form of armor.

Sounds as though one could perform more research into this material and turn it into a more efficient and comfortable bullet proof vest, don’t you think so? Perhaps this is somewhere far off in the future, but at the present, the G-Form Extreme Edge ought to do a good enough job to keep your precious tablet free from scratches and dents should you happen to experience a butterfingers moment.

You will be able to pick up the Extreme Edge which comes in yellow and black colors for $44.95 a pop. There is also an inverted option for the Extreme Edge if you are so inclined, and by that, we do not mean a switch in colors, but rather, the military grade ballistic fabric will be on the outside, while the RPT material remains hidden on the inside. Which is your cup of tea?

Defusable Alarm Clock

Posted: 07 Sep 2011 11:43 AM PDT

I think we all know from movies that bombs are always in the form of rolls of dynamite, a few colored wires, and red numbers that let everyone know when they are going to go off.

I figure that something with that awkward of a design just has to be made into a clock timer. If you let the timer count down from 10 to 0, it will “go off” in the form of blinking lights. Unless you can cut the proper wire, the timer will freeze, preferably at 1 second left, for extra suspense.

You can watch a video after the jump, and you will see how it works. You will notice the guy says “whew” after he defuses the bomb. Just let you know, the faux-bomb changes its wire every time.

This fake bomb is done by Mike Krumpus of Nootropic. It is a DIY project, and a kit will be available soon from Mr. Krumpus. So if you ever have a dream of doing a MacGyver on a bomb, here is your chance.

I’m going to assume that you can’t defuse a real bomb like this. I mean, would a real bomb have some red number that tells you when it will go off? Come on! I’m surprised that this kit doesn’t have one wire that you cut, and the timer goes down really fast.

Hey, check out my 11-foot iPod dock!

Posted: 07 Sep 2011 11:03 AM PDT

What we are looking at is actually an iPod dock, not a replica of a skyscraper designed for the living room.

If you look closely, you can see the iDevice on top. The tower there is 11 feet tall, so you will need a ladder to put it up there.

Yes, it is completely impractical, especially since it weighs in at 870 pounds. You definitely are going to want some help moving this, so prepare a moving party. While you have a party, you should use this for sound. It has 10,000 watts of sound in its five speakers, and it includes a USB, 1/4 inch, and two XLR inputs to connect to other audio components.

Yes, trying to use apps or take calls from this iDevice seems rather counter-productive. I don’t have any word from my source on if it comes with a remote control.

All I can say is, it better have one. The thing costs about $550,000, and if you place an order, you’ll be placed on a six-month waiting list. Clearly this is something that only the filthy rich can possibly afford, and I can’t imagine that the manufacturing costs are that high to make one of these. It is available in black, white, or chrome.

Nintendo 3DS docking cradle sparks criticism

Posted: 07 Sep 2011 10:36 AM PDT

This is a scan of a Japanese magazine Famitsu, and it reveals that the Nintendo 3DS will receive a second analog stick and some should triggers in the form of a cradle.

I suppose cradle is probably the best description for this accessory, and this cradle shall dock. There has already been a lot of complaints rather than compliments about it.

Many say that it is bulky, and I will have to admit that it does take up more real estate than it probably should. Another complaint is symmetry, as the right controller is of a different size than the one on the left.

As far as we know, there is only one game that this dock seems to be ready for, and that is Monster Hunter 3 (tri-)G. More games definitely need to be made available before this gets its worldwide distribution. I know very few gaming accessories that are good for only one game, unless it is Dance Dance Revolution.

I don’t have a release date as far as this peripheral is concerned. Considering that mobile phones and tablets are becoming the method of choice for mobile game users, things are not looking too bright for the handheld console business. I don’t think this dock will change anything.

Love all things steampunk? You might be interested in the Steampunk Wrist Monocular then, as this unique device will certainly let you live out your steampunk dreams, and heck, it might even help complete your costume for this Halloween. Bear in mind, this is not meant to be a replica or a piece of decoration, this monocular actually works. Yes sir, this is a fully functional, brass monocular that will feature up to 2X magnification – not too impressive, but better than no zoom at all, no?

Heck, there is even a weathered leather arm-pouch that helps keep the monocular at hand all the time, and to make it even cooler, the monocular will open up via a lever movement. Yup, there is no need to press a button as folks tend to do these days, and being a steampunk device, you won’t get a touchscreen display, either. U.S. Presidents Talking Game

Posted: 07 Sep 2011 06:00 AM PDT

Presidents talk, and they talk a lot. What we’re more interested in is whether they walk their talk or not (and this does not apply to just presidents but everyone else whom we are in contact with regardless of social order), but today, we won’t be reviewing just what our presidents have done. No sir, this particular game will help us remember interesting details about each president’s life, and coming in the form of the $39.95 U.S. Presidents Talking Game, this is one interactive learning experience that the kids would definitely love (and the adults can learn a thing or two from it).

Being highly portable, the tablet comes with 44 buttons – one for each president, alongside a quartet of game settings. Under the “Fun Facts” mode, you will be able to explore notable details about each leader, ranging from Roosevelt’s leadership through World War II and the Great Depression all the way to a more peaceful time, which includes Reagan’s status as “The Great Communicator.”

The game also includes settings to help you remember birth dates, vice presidents, and first ladies for each president, and if any of the information is wrong, you can point fingers at the Encyclopedia Britannica’s student edition. What’s the point of remembering all that if there is no test? This is where the “Quiz” button comes in handy, testing childrens’ memories about what they have just learned. Make sure you have a couple of AA batteries handy just in case it runs out of juice.

Silynx C4OPS Hybrid Headset – good enough for the army, good enough for you

Posted: 07 Sep 2011 05:30 AM PDT

If you feel that gadgets these days need to be of a higher quality in terms of material and construction, I am quite sure that many others are in agreement with you. After all, don’t you think that many of the devices we purchase are so fragile which is why there are so many screen protectors and smartphone cases in stores? I would think that Apple makes far more money in terms of profit percentage with each licensed accessory sold (protective sleeves, cases, etc) for the iPad and iPhone instead of the actual hardware itself.

Well, if you happen to be one who lives the rough and tumble lifestyle and love adventuring with a group of people, then it would be prudent to make sure that your equipment are up to snuff no matter the conditions. The Silynx C4OPS Hybrid Headset is under our scrutiny here for today, where it is an enhanced in ear headset system that was specially designed to enable 5 x 5 loud and clear communications in extreme noise environments.

Interestingly enough, it has been optimized for operations under the guise of military vehicles, especially in MH-47G Chinooks, A/MH-6M Little Birds, MH-60K Black Hawks, MH-60L Black Hawks, Osprey V22 and other air and maritime platforms. This Hybrid Headset will comprise of a new modified steel core cable, new cable molle clips, and a modified collar/vest clip. As for the modified collar clip, that was designed so that you can firmly secure it to a shirt collar, vest, or in an internal back strap of a MICH or Ops Core helmet.

The collar clip itself will also include a miniature quick disconnect connector which enables the connection of a low profile, noise cancelling Ops Core Chinstrap Boom Mic. When you need to be less overt, just remove the boom mic in a jiffy so that the headset will still be able to work as usual, relying on the in ear mic instead.

You can be rest assure that the Silynx C4OPS Hybrid Headset has already undergone rigorous lab and field testing, and is combat proven after being deployed successfully in theatres of war by US and NATO top tier SOF units. No idea on pricing, but the next time you meet anyone in the US Special Forces as well as other top tier special forces of NATO, why not ask them whether you can get a look at it?

If only a civilian version is released, so that when as a party, we head out to the mountains or rough it outdoors, at least we can be in close contact with one another without worrying about the device failing.

Atari Arcade Duo-Powered Joystick for the iPad

Posted: 06 Sep 2011 02:22 PM PDT

Since a lot of users want to use their iPad for games, Atari thought that they could make an accessory for that.

I suppose it is an effort from the company to make gaming as old-school as possible for the company’s old-school titles. For example, you can get a lot of 2600 games on Atari’s Greatest hits iPad App like Asteroids, Centipede, Missile Command and even more.

Of course, the 2600 joystick had only one button, and this guy has four. The joystick is also a different look than the old school console system, but the ball on the top is welcome. Perhaps you can get an attachment for a trackball like the Centipede arcade game of yore (actually, it was the early eighties).

This Atari Arcade Duo Joystick has been making the rounds on tech and gadget blogs, and most of them have been making comparisons to the iCade. The iCade definitely has the arcade-style video game set up and this product is available at ThinkGeek for a price of $99.99.

As for Atari’s tabletop iPad gaming accessory, there doesn’t seem to be a price out as such. It would be good if word gets out on a price of this, especially if it is lower than the iCade.

Amazon delivering to 7-Eleven lockers in Seattle

Posted: 06 Sep 2011 01:40 PM PDT

As a gadget reviewer, I receive a lot of things delivered to me. Seldom do I get anything from Amazon, but the World’s Biggest Bookstore is now working on a way to change the way we receive deliveries as we know it.

Instead of letting the package come to you, now you can come to it. Amazon is setting up lockers at 7-Eleven mini marts in Seattle, where the company is based.

Amazon customers will be told that their order is ready to pick up through a notification email, and will be given a pin number. They can soon journey to the nearest 7-Eleven, input the number on a touchscreen, and open up their locker to receive their product.

I have to admit that I admire Amazon and 7-Eleven’s “meet me halfway” program, and I am guessing that this saves a bundle on shipping. Why pay FedEx or UPS or other third party shipping company when Amazon can just get a delivery truck of their own and make rounds to the local 7-Elevens? I would imagine that this could eliminate the need for boxes.

Right now, Amazon is taking this new “locker program” through trials. If it works locally, I would imagine that it will be adapted nationally. However, third party shipping companies will have to get involved unless the company has figured out a way to do it themselves.

BAE Systems creates Adaptiv armor systems to turn objects invisible on infrared

Posted: 06 Sep 2011 12:00 PM PDT

If you look closely at the tank in this image, you will notice that it is covered with hexagonal-sectioned armor. The purpose of this honeycomb armor is that they dynamically adjust their heat emissions.

This is BAE Systems Adaptiv armor system that allows vehicles to disguise themselves from infrared scanners. I’m sure you have seen how infrared cameras are used to see in the dark, as objects with heat look lighter than their cooler surroundings.

The Adaptiv armor is able to disguise by making a tank or other vehicle look like something less threatening like an animal. It does this by adjusting the temperature pixels on its shell. It can even make a tank disappear, and you can see (or not see) it for yourself if you click on the Source link.

Granted, this technology won’t do much good during the daylight, but at night, when infrared is the only way to see, you might as well be using Harry Potter’s invisibility cloak.

Yes, this is perfect camouflage, until someone invents a way to detect Adaptiv’s armor. Hey, whoever can perfect this Adaptiv effect first on their helicopters and tanks have a clear advantage in war. In other words, the side with these hexagonal tiles will be as safe as the Honeycomb Hideout. Some of you might not understand that reference.

Ultimate Gaming Chair V3

Gamers take their hardware very seriously, especially those who rock to the PC as a gaming platform of choice. Not only will you find some sort of fancy water-cooled system running in the basement, it will also come with a dedicated graphics card that is capable of churning out mind-numbing levels of performance alongside a screamer of a processor – at a handsome price, of course. You will most probably find a gaming keyboard and mouse that will fit the profile of the gamer to complement the whole setup, but how many will invest in a chair that’s dedicated to gaming?

I suppose the answer is not many, especially when you need to drop a cool £299.95 for the Ultimate Gaming Chair V3. Some might call it a massage chair or a cinema chair when they have spent some time with it, since it will also be able to be plugged into other devices such as an iPad, iPhone, iPod, DVD player, HDTV in addition to the gamut of major games consoles that are out there in the market at the moment.

The Ultimate Game Chair V3 sports a dozen vibration motors that will work in tandem with your game to give you the most realistic experience possible, while head mounted speakers ensure your ears will be on the receiving end of mind-numbing action. Heck, they’re even linkable to make for a far more social gaming experience.

Lost in Space B-9 Robot

Feeling rather rich and want to lighten your pockets by a sizeable sum? That’s not a problem, especially when you are a huge fan of the Lost in Space series, thanks to the whopping £25,500 price tag that is associated with the Lost in Space B-9 Robot. Yes sir, this robot has proved to be the so-called voice of reason in the Lost in Space series, and you can now have B-9 in your living room to add some dazzle for visitors whenever they drop by.

Expect this to be a family heirloom of sorts a few generations down, especially when this is a limited edition, fully licensed version in the B-9 Robot from the series. It was built based on original moulds and reference material from Robot's Season 3 incarnation, where it sports an acrylic bubble-head, a laser-cut steel 'brain', engraved acrylic chest buttons, rubber tread belts, knee bellows, leg bellows, and hundreds of individually fabricated parts which make it look extremely real.

Heck, B-9 can even adjust his head, ear sensors, torso and soil sampler, while manipulating his 'claws'. Good thing all of that can be achieved not through someone wearing a costume inside, but via the included remote control. Heck, at that price, I’d expect the remote control to be gold plated!

Zero1.tv unveils VooMote Zapper

Posted: 06 Sep 2011 05:30 AM PDT

Zero1.tv certainly had something interesting up their sleeves at the recently concluded IFA 2011 in Berlin, which is the VooMote Zapper. We first saw the VooMote One sometime earlier this year, but the VooMote Zapper is a slight variation of the One so to speak, where the main purpose of its existence would be to convert your iOS device into an impressively smart universal remote – in fact, one that is capable of gaining full control over virtually all of your A/V gear, while letting you hunt down your favorite TV shows effortlessly.

Touted to be one of the newer, next generation remote controls, it was specially designed to be light-weight and convenient, and ought to be able to fit into most pockets without missing a beat. Being as tiny as a paperclip might prove it to be rather elusive for those who tend to lose things easily, but at least you know at that size, it will plug into the 30-pin connector on your iOS device in a jiffy without looking like an eyesore.

What’s the point of having hardware like the VooMote Zapper when it does not have the right kind of software to go along with it? Well, fret not – there is a free app to accompany this puppy that delivers full control over hundreds of thousands of electronic devices. Setting it up is a snap, so there is no need to pore over thick manuals or to go through forum after forum online for a solution. All it takes are just seconds to have the VooMote Zapper control just about any A/V device in the vicinity.

Since it is iDevice agnostic, you can be sure that the versatility and mobility of this particular device is unmatched. Being fully customizable, it enables you to optimize the layout of your remote, where you can also make use of the Edit Mode in order to create macros which will execute functions with but a single touch. The tailor-made touch screen will have a user interface which has been optimized to suit your taste, while the Room Control and One View features that were made popular by the VooMote One are back, allowing you to categorize your infrared devices by room location.

Expect the VooMote Zapper to arrive this Fall, although pricing details have yet to be ironed out just yet.
