Air Swimmers fishes swim through the air

Posted: 16 Feb 2011 05:01 PM PST

I know that we live in an age where we can buy a cheap-o remote control helicopter for under $50 when it would have cost hundreds a decade ago, but that is really the result of cheaper workmanship.

I hope there isn’t cheap workmanship in this remote control blimp, because I like the idea of a remote control blimp. I also love the idea of making it in the form of a fish.

You can check out the video of it after the jump, and there is a clownfish and a shark moving around. I suppose this is case Pixar goes under and the sequel to Finding Nemo has to be live-action.

Just kidding on that last part. I do have to admit that I admire the way these fish blimps move. It probably would have been easy to create propellers on this to make it move it in the air. I’m sure it was probably harder to make the tail move on this guy so the fish can “swim” in the air.

Right now, these Air Swimmers are only available in shark and clownfish, but I would like to see them in all types. Then I would love to see a school of them swimming through the air. They will be available in July for about $39.99.

Paper Jamz has some updates

Posted: 16 Feb 2011 04:37 PM PST

We have reported on WowWee’s Paper Jamz guitars before, in fact, we have reported on it several times.

My son recently got one of these Paper Jamz guitars for his seventh birthday, and it is fun to play “Two Princes” by the Spin Doctors on it. I didn’t think there was much to do on this thing, but WowWee is now doing something more with them.

The first update is the downloadable content, more power chords, as well as a special waa waa function that will bend notes when the neck is shook up. This is definitely not meant to be a replacement for Guitar Hero.

Apparently, there is no problem with the thickness of the Paper Jamz, and they will remain as thin as ever. In addition to the downloadable song content, there are downloadable guitar sounds that include “heavy metal and twanging country”.

By the way, there is a new keytar Paper Jamz that is devoted to Justin Bieber. It includes Bieber voice samples, Bieber songs, a drum kit, plus an octave of note and effects. This is the point where I make Justin Bieber jokes, but I think the fact that this pre-teen is a huge sensation is funny enough.

I don’t have any word of when these new Paper Jamz will be out, nor the new Justin Bieber Paper Jamz keytar. I also don’t have a price.

Solowheel – Looks Like Half a Segway, but Oh So Portable and Twice as Fun

Posted: 16 Feb 2011 01:19 PM PST

Once again, I have something to share, live from the New York Toy Fair, and how I wish I had come across this booth first, instead of on my last day and 24th mile here at the show. Boy are my feet sore.

Check out the Solowheel, the most awesome motorized AND portable personal transportation device you have ever seen. The Solowheel is a singular self balancing wheel, with side mounted and foldable foot pegs. The whole thing weighs in at only 20 pounds, can travel at speeds up to 12 miles an hour and can easily be carried around suitcase-style!  See more pictures and video HERE

The Solowheel works by using gyroscopic technology for balance, a 1000 watt motor, and a rechargeable Lithium-ion battery that manages to recapture some of its own energy when you coast or take a downhill ride. The battery charges up in less than an hour, and each charge provides you with about 2 hours of true motoring pleasure.

The Solowheel is so much easier to use than you would think, after mastering the mount, you can just step up onto it and you're on your way, leaning controls your speed and direction. Lean forward to go forward and backward when you want to slow down.

Wow, I can see the city of the future, and there are a whole bunch of these in it!

And at around $1500.00 bucks, I’m hoping one of them is going to be mine!

The Eton Scorpion is all of the above and more, where £49.99 will net you a built-in torch as well so that you will be one of the better equipped people whenever you head out to the hills for a short camping trip, the only thing it doesn’t do is pack a flamethrower to fend hungry bears off. HTC Flyer enters the tablet airspace

Posted: 16 Feb 2011 04:30 AM PST

Is it me, or is HTC just plain interested in dipping their fingers into every gadget cookie jar out there? The smartphone company has certainly come very far since its Windows Mobile-powered days, and has since rolled out a fair number of flagship models on the Android platform that can be considered as ‘superphones’. Well, the tablet market is fair game, too, and HTC isn’t lost on the idea – hence introducing the HTC Flyer at the Mobile World Congress 2011 in Barcelona, Spain.

At first glance, some people might think that the HTC Flyer has the Samsung Galaxy Tab trained in its sights, but surely that moving target is not worth the accolades, as the iPad is what all tablet manufacturers should be gunning for. Well, we will take a closer look at how the HTC Flyer fares in terms of specifications, and wonder how is it going to fare in the market.

Since the HTC Flyer is a tablet, it goes without saying that HTC wil continue their partnership with Google by running Android on it, and of course, skinning it with a tablet-centric version of the HTC Sense. You will find it come in a sleek aluminum unibody that ought to move heads, helping the HTC Flyer tablet exude an iconic style and build quality that HTC is famous for.

It won’t be heavy in your pocket either, being of the same weight as that of a paperback book, and has dimensions that should have it fit in a jacket pocket with ease. Other specifications include a seven-inch display, a lightning fast 1.5Ghz processor and high-speed HSPA+ wireless capabilities, making it quite the challenger on paper where specifications are concerned.

Of course, touch interaction isn’t all there is to the HTC Flyer, since it will also boast the new HTC Scribe Technology that lets you rediscover the natural act of writing. HTC Scribe Technology will usher in a new era of integrated digital ink innovations which make it a snap to take notes, sign contracts, draw pictures, or even write on a web page or photo.

Apart from that, the HTC Flyer tablet will also play nice with HTC Watch, which is actually HTC’s new video download service. This service delivers low-cost on-demand progressive downloading of hundreds of High-Definition movies from major studios. No idea on how much the HTC Flyer will cost, and which carrier will it be tied down to, but we do know that a global release is set to happen in Q2 2011.

HTC does Facebook phones with ChaCha and Salsa

Posted: 16 Feb 2011 04:00 AM PST

As Mark touched on the existence of two Facebook-centric phones being introduced to the world at Mobile World Congress 2011 in Barcelona, Spain, we will look at them in greater detail today. Adopting a dance stance, we do wonder whether future iterations of such handsets will not be enhanced with a suffix, but rather, take on other names like the HTC Rock, HTC HipHop or even HTC Classical. I digress, let us see what these social networking phones are able to do.

First off, the HTC ChaCha and HTC Salsa do stand out from the rest of the smartphones that are on the market simply by virtue of a dedicated Facebook button that delivers one-touch access to the key functions of the Facebook service. Of course, that doesn’t mean that the HTC Sense experience is diminished in any way – no sir, you will find yourself more entrenched in Facebook more than ever now.

After all, with over 500 million active users worldwide, Facebook is a tour de force that will surely be a powerful brand name to be associated with, making sense for HTC to jump at the opportunity.

The Facebook button on the HTC ChaCha and HTC Salsa are context-aware, where it will gently pulse with light whenever there is an opportunity to share content or updates through Facebook. This means pressing it just once will let you update your status, upload a photo, share a Website, and even post the song that you are currently grooving to. How about snapping a photo of friends on your phone and have it uploaded instantly to Facebook?

The possibilities are more or less endless, and perhaps HTC does not want to put all their eggs in a single basket, hence the splitting up of the Facebook phone to theHTC ChaCha and HTC Salsa variants. The former will come in a unique tilt design which shapes the display and physical QWERTY keyboard, making it a snap to see everything that goes on as well as being easy on your fingers as you type. Features include a 5-megapixel color camera with auto focus and LED flash and a VGA front-facing camera, a 2.6-inch, 480 x 320 resolution landscape touch screen.

As for the HTC Salsa that reminds us of the HTC Legend, it is more of what you’re used to if you aren’t a BlackBerry addict, sporting a generous 3.4-inch, 480 x 320 resolution touch display.

Expect both handsets to hit Europe and Asian markets in Q2 this year, while they will arrive Stateside via AT&T in an exclusive agreement.
