Today, it is officially iPad 2 day!

Posted: 02 Mar 2011 04:54 PM PST

As you might have guessed, this is one of those stories that we have to report on, simply because we are a tech blog. I’m sure that most of you already know that Steve Jobs made the big announcement that the iPad 2 is on its way. Hit the jump to see what you haven’t heard.

Most of the announcement confirmed rumors. It will have the cameras, both front and back facing. Steve also promised some nice Photo Booth software as well as Facetime.

The iPad 2 is 33 percent thinner than the original, and lighter at 1.3 pounds (original was 1.5 pounds). Also on the inside is the new A5 chip that will bring graphics 9 times as fast as the original, with a CPU speed that is twice as fast. The same gyroscope that resides on the inside of the iPod Touch and iPhone will also be inside the iPad 2. As for the battery life, it will be a 10 hours, with over a month of standby.

The shipping date for the iPad 2 is quite immediate at March 11th. The price will be the same as the original, and it will come in black and white.

Of course, Steve Jobs did not just announce just the iPad 2, but he announced the Smart Cover, an accessory that magnetically sticks to the front of the iPad 2. He also announced an HDMI out cable, not to mention lots of new Apps, and iOS 4.3.

Solar Powered iPhone? Yes Please

Posted: 02 Mar 2011 07:20 AM PST

So, I take my cell phone with me no matter where I go. I consider it a luxury, but I also like to think that I would have it with me in the case of an emergency, like when my brand new car broke down this morning, and I was stuck on the side of the highway. Oh I had my phone alright, but the battery was dead, and the charger was in my other (and I guess, better) car.

Well that wont ever happen to any of us again if Apple has it's way. According to U.S. patent reports, Apple wants to be able to incorporate solar cells into some of their touch screen products. Can anyone say iPhone 5? Okay, can anyone say iPhone 6 then? Anyway, let's imagine if you will, the premise of throwing your phone up on the dashboard and having it be ready to go anytime you need it. Awesome.

The Cupertino giants have a better idea for solar-charging than just sticking a whole bunch of ugly solar panels on the back of their iDevices, the plan seems to be to put energy collecting cells hidden underneath the ever popular touchscreen display. So the hope would be that the iPhone won't look much different, but would be able to charge itself cord-free!

It's not that solar powered cell phones haven't been lurking around for a while. In fact, a couple of companies have already waved around some prototypes of solar powered phones quite a while ago, but they're not here yet, and when a company like Apple starts talking solar, I say let the sun shine in. Of course I don't know what you say when it rains, but I'll let them figure that out too.

Triops – Move Over Sea Monkeys!

Posted: 02 Mar 2011 05:14 AM PST

Remember Sea-Monkeys? I couldn't wait to set up my little plastic tank and hatch my own little sea monkey family, and teach them all the tricks listed on the box, and feed them, and take them places, and I would have done all those things too… if I ever got to see the suckers. I know they were there, little tiny pinpoints spotted in the sunlight, but they were so small, even my hopes of naming them were dashed.

But now we have another instant pet, Triops. Triops are actually really cool shrimp that look a lot like mini horseshoe crabs and they are considered living fossils, with a history that reaches back to the Carboniferous period, 300 million years ago.  They have pretty much survived unchanged in a state of suspended animation. So now you get the chance to bring these prehistoric monsters back to life, just by adding water to the eggs. Cool.

Triops have 3 eyes and can grow up to be 2 inches long! They hatch in around 24 hours and can double in size daily, kind of like me when there’s chocolate in the house. Anyway, they breathe through their feet and can eat all kids of stuff, including each other. They can make great pets that can be kept on any desktop or a dresser and in addition to tremendous educational value, Triops are also super fun, big enough to name and you don't have to take them for walks or empty a kitty litter box. So if you, like me, are never going to have the pet Llama that you really wanted, Triops may be for you.

So get your Triops Deluxe Kit that includes everything you need to hatch your own pets at www.thinkgeek.com for only around $15.00 bucks.

Four Attractant Mosquito Trap

Posted: 02 Mar 2011 04:00 AM PST

Certain mosquitoes do carry some deadly diseases, and it goes without saying that they are a pest which we could all do without. I’m not too sure how it will affect the overall ecological system though, but surely frogs and other carnivores who feast on mosquitoes can find other insects to keep themselves full?

Us as humans can do our part to make sure that these little critters will not be able to feast on our blood for long, especially when we’re outdoors, with the Four Attractant Mosquito Trap. This unique device will emit light, vibrations, heat, and a scent which will be able to attract and kill mosquitoes across the length and breadth of one acre.

An LED light oscillates at frequencies which have long been proven to appeal to mosquitoes’ spectral sensitivity, where the trap itself is capable of producing gentle vibrations which will excite the pesky insects, drawing them in to their death knell. Infrared heat is also emitted to simulate human body temperature as it produces the smell of octenol (more scientifically inclined readers would know that this is the same chemical in human breath and sweat) that will further enhance its ability to lure mosquitoes to the trap.

More or less capable of “ushering” mosquitoes to a certain death trap, any one of them who are unfortunate enough to gravitate to the unit will see a fan pulls them into a collection net, where they will be trapped for all eternity (insert evil laughter here) and die of dehydration in due time. Hmmm, interesting – I do wonder just how much water does a mosquito need in order to survive – we wish there was a way to zap all of them in the trapped compartment for a fast death.

So far, an independent medical entomologist has tested leading traps and the four attractant mosquito trap managed to capture 1,343 mosquitoes per night, which is a whole lot better compared to competing models which collected as few as 215. To sweeten the deal and make this all the more environmentally friendly, an integrated digital timer will turn the trap on and off at any time (and any day) of your choice.

Each $249.99 purchase comes with an octenol strip which can last for up to 30 days. It is powered via an AC outlet, and has a 60′ cord to extend its reach far and wide in and around your home.
