Solar Power Charger Case works with your small gadgets

Posted: 01 Feb 2010 02:59 PM PST

China-Gadget-Solar-Battery-Bag-400x400

Solar chargers to carry around in addition to your gadgets are pretty common.  However, this one doesn’t give you something extra to carry.  Instead it holds onto your gadget of choice for you and keeps it protected.  All the while giving it some juice directly from the solar panel that’s attached to the front of the case.  You could use it for emergency situations only or use it on a more regular basis, either way it would come in handy.

The case is meant to work with your usual small gadgets like your camera, cellphone and MP3 player.  All of which should fit into the case provided that they’re a smaller sized device.  It comes with an AC charger, a USB connect cable and a mobile phone plug to help you plug in your phone.  You just put it in the case, plug it in and zip it up.  The cord stays concealed within the pouch.  You can purchase one for $32.99 through China Grabber.

Armatix pistol won’t fire without the watch nearby

Posted: 01 Feb 2010 02:58 PM PST

armatix-.22-pistol-1I have never heard of the Shooting, Hunting, and Outdoor Trade Show, but I think it is just hysterical that it abbreviates to SHOT. It sounds like a fictional group in some anti-gun propaganda film.

Anyway, during SHOT, a German company known as Armatix had a smartgun like I have never seen before. This pistol is programmed not to fire unless you get a wireless arming signal from a special wristwatch.

As you can see from the photo, there is a green light. It means you can fire the gun. A red light means you can’t fire it. I’m not certain if the red warning light should mean that the gun will fire, so don’t mix up the light colors. The lights on the gun remind me of the phasers in the last Star Trek film.

Speaking of films, the Armatix really should be in a movie. Here’s the scene: some hero is trapped in a room with a bad guy who has an Armatix pistol. The bad guy is about to shoot him, and then the hero manages a precision knife throw that cuts off the wristwatch. The villain can’t shoot his gun with the watch.

Then the hero and the villain fight, and at some point, the hero gets the Armatix wristwatch in one hand, and the gun in the other. Then bang, final resolution, and credits.

Armatix wants to put a limited version of the high-tech pistol for about $9,700. That’s a pretty high price, but it is the gun of the future, today!

Palro robot pal from Fujisoft

Posted: 01 Feb 2010 02:31 PM PST

palroSure, I love covering robots here on Coolest Gadgets, and this particular one from Fujisoft is the Palro. I can only assume that this is some sort of blend of the words “Pal” and “Robot”. However, I would rather it have been called “RoPal”, doesn’t that sound so much cuter?

Palro comes with a lot of features that include 20 joints, five microphones, voice recognition, mono speakers, 3 Megapixel camera, Wi-Fi IEE 802.11 b/g/n, gyro-sensor, three-axis acceleration sensor, eight pressure sensors on the feet, 1GB internal memory, a USB port, and an Intel Atom 1.6GHz processor. In other words, he’s your laptop with arms and legs.

The Palro is powered by a 7.4V/2,800mAH lithium ion battery for power. Palro weighs in at 1.9 kg and is 15 inches tall.

Now, what is it that Palro can do? That is for the user to decide! Palro has some open architecture which allows the user to decide what they want to use Palro for.

Unfortunately, the Palro isn’t just available for anyone. But then again, not everyone can afford to shell out $3,300 for what is essentially a programmable robot. Fujisoft is planning on selling about one thousand Palros to research institutions on March 15. If you are a research institution, then you should probably hurry up and place your order. I’ve heard that the Trade Federation ordered enough Palro’s to take over the planet of Naboo.

Wacom updates Intuos4, updated the Bamboo line

Posted: 01 Feb 2010 02:08 PM PST

Wacom productsOkay, I have to admit that I am only slightly behind reporting this news, but needless to say, Wacom has recently updated two of their products, and I was surprised that we didn’t cover one of their updates already.

The most recent update is the Intuos4, which we have covered previously. It has recently received an update: wireless capability. It uses Bluetooth to do this, and the lithium ion battery can be charged via USB.

We’ve also covered the Wacom Bamboo Tablet, and these have received an update for multi-touch capacity a few months ago. So not only can you draw on this trackpad, but your finger can do some multi-touch interfacing on it as well.

In fact, using the Wacom Pen and Touch, which I had the chance to try out, was a lot like using an iPhone’s touchscreen. Now I know what it is like to use an iPad with a blank screen.

Seriously, the Pen and Touch uses the finger spread and pinch to enlarge and shrink images. You can also use two fingers to do a rotation, and single touch comes in handy for scrolling.

The wireless Bluetooth Intuos 4 is available in medium size only for about $400, which is $50 more than its wired version. As for the Bamboo Pen and Touch, it is about $99.

Flower Infant Nurser Monitor records video and audio

portable-wireless-baby-monitor-with-camnera

A lot of baby monitors just look like every other electronic device on the market.  If you’d like one that’s going to blend in within the baby’s room then these little cameras would do a whole lot better.  These bright flowers actually look like they belong in a kids room.  Plus they have the benefits of giving you a visual of your baby as well as making it possible to hear when the baby is crying.

The camera will work even when the room has gone dark.  There are two different portable wireless cameras that can clip onto the edge of the crib or the edge of a shelf.  You can then watch the color video on the rechargeable receiver.  The cameras come in a two pack and it appears they come in two different colors, but I don’t believe you can pick those two colors.  You can purchase the set for $134.99 through Amazon.

Going green with Samsung’s latest memory

Posted: 01 Feb 2010 05:30 AM PST

samsung-ddr3

It is encouraging to see that more and more companies are taking up their social responsibility by ensuring the process of manufacturing their products would not harm the environment (and eventually us humans) in a detrimental manner, with Samsung being one of them. Samsung’s participation in this effort is crucial considering the size of their organization and proliferation of products across many countries in nearly all aspects of life. Well, their latest efforts (by Samsung Electronics) would be the industry's first 30-nanometer-class DRAM which comes in two gigabit (Gb) densities, and not only that, it is the most advanced green DDR3 DRAM at point of publishing which utilizes 30nm-class technology.

After all, this move makes perfect sense with DDR3 SDRAM being the predominant main memory this quarter, and Samsung's aggressive advancement in process technology has paid off in the form of raise productivity and an expedited dissemination of high performance, 1.5V and 1.35V DDR3 for a wide range of computers ranging from servers to desktop PCs and notebooks.

For those who love statistics, you will be pleased to know that the impact on our environment is lessened thanks to the 30nm-class process that, when applied to DDR3 mass production, is capable of raising productivity by up to 60% compared to 40nm-class DDR3. This basically doubles production cost-efficiency compared to DRAM produced using the now more ancient 50nm to 60nm-class technology.

Apart from that, the new 30nm-class 2Gb, Green DRAM is capable of reducing power consumption by up to 30% in comparison to 50nm-class DRAM. When a 4GB, 30nm module sees action in a new-generation notebook, it will only sip a mere 3W/hour, which is just 3% of the total power usage of a notebook in the same time frame. Not only servers and notebooks will be able to use the new DDR3 memory, as it can also see action in future versions of netbooks and mobile devices as well. Expect mass production of the new 30nm-class DDR3 memory to commend in the second half of 2010.

MSI unveils CX420 and CR420 notebooks

Posted: 01 Feb 2010 05:00 AM PST

msi-cx420

MSI has made a name for itself in the world of netbooks and notebooks, and with their collection of all-in-one PCs make them a formidable PC manufacturer as well. Their latest notebook models to roll off the production line would be the CX420 and CR420, where both of them will come with the latest Intel Core i Series processors to keep up with the times while offering enough processing firepower to handle future applications with aplomb. The former will be equipped with a built-in ATi Radeon HD5470 discrete graphics card alongside 1GB DDR3 memory, while an external casing coated with MSI's exclusive Cross-Hatch Color Film Print patterning makes it a joy to look at. Being lightweight also goes some way in making it appealing to those who want a more-than-decent performer without letting you feel as though you were toting a bag of bricks on your travels.

To provide more details on the aforementioned Cross-Hatch Color Film Print Pattern, both the lid and palm rest area of the CX420 and CR420 are coated with it, offering scratch-resistant protection while revealing an exquisite texture which exhibits a radiant gloss. Coming at a perfect 45-degree angle, the case is constructed with MSI’s “wedge” design techniques, resulting in the notebook being slimmer, lighter and more portable – anything more portable would require you to get a netbook or one of those newfangled iPads when it rolls out.

Other hardware specifications include a chiclet keyboard for an optimum typing experience, a classic seamless touch-pad, the latest Intel Arrandale platform, lower power consumption compared to its previous generation (with 15% extended battery life), Hyper-Threading technology configuration and an integrated graphics core. The 16:9 Theater-Class LED-Backlit Screen makes it suitable for watching movies on the go, battery-permitting. No idea on pricing, but hopefully they fall within a similar range for devices of its class, and of course cheaper is better – nobody would complain, right?

Reverse Geocaching Box

Posted: 01 Feb 2010 04:30 AM PST

reverse-geocaching-box

Most of us would have heard of geo-tagging, where it is a way to add map coordinates to photographs and gadgets in order to employ positional markers, helping you remember where you went for the summer holidays in 2010 half a century from now. Well, there is nothing quite like seeing a reverse position – hence the reverse geo-caching gift box which relies on a similar technology which can only be opened once it is placed within the set coordinates – which would mean getting both the longitude and latitude perfectly matched. Sounds like some sort of James Bond spy-thriller quest – imagine driving your lady nuts with a proposal ring inside, causing her to drive all over town until the box magically pops open at the restaurant the both of you first met.

Headless USB Barbie

Barbie must’ve been an unrecorded wife of Henry VIII – as she has to undergo a decapicitation each time you want to access data within her. Hmmm, who says blondes are dumb, considering the amount of memory she holds within? Definitely one of the creepier DIY USB flash drive projects, and it might traumatize some of the smaller girls around who love their Barbies to death, but it sure is one of the more interesting DIY weekend project to indulge yourself in. What are some of the other zanier USB flash drive mods that you have come across so far? Get your instructions from where else but Instructables.

iPad turns into dating tool

Posted: 31 Jan 2010 07:39 PM PST

skoutThe Apple iPad’s initial buzz has come and gone, and with the dust settling, it seems that many parties are not looking at it with nods of approval. After all, there are many gripes and issues that potential users would run into, and the fact that Apple seems to be trying to create a new niche market with it could prove to be a much more difficult sell compared to the iPhone when it first hit the scene in June 2007. Well, killer apps are what devices are all about these days, as having fantastic hardware alone is not good enough anymore. What are some of the more practical uses that you can think of with the iPad? Some folks are already quick off the blocks, with Skout ready to hit the market the moment the iPad rolls out in 56 days’ time. The Skout, you ask? What’s that for? Well, proceed to the extended post for the answers, ladies and gentlemen.

Basically, Skout is a community dating application that makes it “even easier for singles to discover others with similar interests, using location information and the iPad’s rich interface.” After all, Skout.com is currently the leading mobile, real-time, dating site which enables you to flirt with singles in your immediate vicinity regardless of your position, letting you meet up with others (hopefully they aren’t some deranged person who suffers from multiple personalities and aims to make literal mincemeat out of you after the first date just like in those horror movies) at both your time and convenience. Guess this is what Steve Jobs meant when he dubbed the iPad a more “intimate” device, heh heh.

Skout for the iPad is equipped with a HotMap that displays a live overview of where you can find the most singles in your area – sounds like a dangerous tool to have if you’re bent in criminal intent! For those who want to end their lonely Saturday nights, Skout allows you to chat, share photos and even videos with one another, although bear in mind Skout won’t take responsibility if you settle down happily ever after with the lady of your dreams whom you met over Skout!

Sharp unveils solar-powered mobile

Posted: 31 Jan 2010 06:35 PM PST

solar_mobile

There is nothing more frustrating that talking on the phone only to have the line cut off simply because you ran out of juice. Sharp hopes to change that by offering an alternative method to keep your cellphone juiced up at all times, thanks to the Sharp SH6230C which will hit the Chinese market later this February. It is the first solar-powered cellphone by Sharp for the overseas market, boasting Sharp's proprietary solar cell module alongside a generous 2.9″ LCD display and a 5-megapixel autofocus camera. The solar panel is located on the back of the handset, so you can always leave it by your window at the office to keep it primed for long conversations. No idea on its pricing though, but it is nice to see companies taking a more eco-friendly approach in their products.

Electrical Clothes Hanger Dryer

Posted: 31 Jan 2010 06:32 PM PST

electricclotheshangerdryerWinter can be pretty sucky as your clothes will have a hard time drying out on a clothesline unlike in summer, but good thing there’s this thing known as dryers (which consume a whole lot of juice, obviously, but that’s the price to pay if you don’t want to wear soggy underwear for the entire winter season). Well, there is nothing quite like a little bit of improvisation in the form of the Electrical Clothes Hanger Dryer. Retailing for a relatively affordable $28.04, the Electrical Clothes Hanger Dryer must be connected to a power outlet, and when turned on, hot air will blow out of it to turn whatever’s hung on it as dry as the Gobi desert. Well, almost. Be careful not to plug this in when your hands are wet though!

Withings Wi-Fi Body Scale gets an update

Posted: 31 Jan 2010 06:22 PM PST

withings-google-health

Many of us have a bathroom scale stashed away somewhere (which would normally be in the bathroom itself, hence its name), but how many of us step on it with trepidation? We are often afraid of the numbers that greet us, and is one of the few instances where more is not necessarily better (unless you’re trying to bulk up after drinking all those protein shakes and pressing iron for hours on end at the gym). Well, time has passed, and the ordinary bathroom scale received minor upgrades which includes a digital display over the last decade, culminating in the Withings Wi-Fi Body Scale. Well, it looks as though the Withings Wi-Fi Body Scale has received an update, making it the first Wi-Fi-connected personal scale in the world that boasts integration with the Google Health service. In a nutshell, the Withings WiFi Body Scale is capable of providing updates to a user's Google Health profile in real-time thanks to its integrated Wi-Fi connection.

Just what is Google Health? Launched in 2009, Google Health functions as an online personal health record which enables users to store, organize, and manage health information in a single, centralized location. With relevant information collected, it can then be shared with nominated individuals, where among them include (but are not limited to) doctors, care-givers and other family members. Sounds like the perfect online accountability tool for individuals who are striving for weight gain/loss which points toward their health status. Of course, there is always the chance of cheating by keying in the wrong numbers, but this is where the Withings Wi-Fi Body Scale comes in handy. After all, the scale will automatically send updates of your weight and fat mass to your Google Health profile, ensuring there is no tampering in the process.

Apart from Google Health, the Withings Wi-Fi Body Scale currently is able to connect to a secure webpage, an iPhone (free app) and even via Twitter. Interested in picking up this super smart scale? It can be yours for $159.

kingston-datatraveler5000

Most of us have a few USB flash drive these days, considering the extremely low prices that flash memory has dropped to. However, many of us USB flash drive owners don’t really think about security in the event where our little peripherals go missing out of carelessness, forgetfulness or theft. Kingston understands this, and have unveiled their latest DataTraveler 500 which is a FIPS 140-2 Level 2 certified with Level 3 pending device, boasting 256-bit AES hardware-based encryption. The DataTraveler 5000 uses patented Secured by SPYRUS technology that supports hardware-based 256-bit XTS-AES and Suite B cryptography, including ECC, as mentioned above. For the layman, Suite B algorithms would be specifically selected and approved by the U.S. government and the Department of Defense, where it will see action in multinational data sharing environments that comprise of both classified and unclassified applications. After all, if you can’t trust the government, who else can you trust, right? As for XTS-AES mode, this cipher mode for encryption is superior to CBC, ECB and other modes.

Depending on your business or enterprise needs, the Kingston DataTraveler 5000 USB flash drive will come in 2GB, 4GB, 8GB and 16GB capacities. Each purchase will come pre-loaded with a Malware scanning application, while U.S. government customers are offered a variety of Trade Agreement Act-compliant (TAA) products and has a dedicated federal sales team in place.
