Crayola’s colored bubbles may be fun, but not very washable

Posted: 05 Apr 2011 08:00 AM PDT

In the movie Knocked Up, two men are watching kids play with bubbles, and they are marveled. Paul Ruud shares with Seth Rogen that “I wish I loved anything as much as my kids love bubbles”.

I was watching my kids play with bubbles the other day, and realized that the technology for blowing bubbles has not really changed. I guess Crayola figured that transparent bubbles could be given a dash of color, and so they added their own touch. The results have been disastrous. The colored bubble product has sold several hundred thousand since its initial release in February, but many parents have been complaining.

Despite the fact that the product is stamped with the label “Washable”, this doesn’t mean it is easily washable. One user had Sunset Orange bubble soap that dripped on the floor of her garage, and it dried up red like blood. The blue color “turn her two boys into Smurfs”. Another blogger says that it requires “scrubbing the top layer of the skin to get the color out”.

To be fair, Crayola does include a warning to not use at weddings or indoors, as well as “other materials that cannot be laundered”. So I guess that colored bubbles have a place: outside in an area that you don’t care about getting dirty, and make sure your kids are playing in smocks.

Onkyo expands HT-RC family of home theater receivers

Posted: 05 Apr 2011 06:30 AM PDT

Everyone, say hello to the new Onkyo HT-RC370 and HT-RC360, where both of them will now be part of the HT-TC family of home theater receivers which will see off the HT-RC270 and HT-RC260 in the process. What makes these two new kids on the block all the more special would be them being among the first AV receivers that are equipped with the new Marvell Qdeo 4K video upscaling processor.

Additional shared features include a front-panel USB port which will deliver a direct digital connection for an iPod or iPhone, not to mention support for audio playback from USB mass-storage devices. Heck, the USB port itself even plays nice with album art from your iPod/iPhone, now how about that? As for the HT-RC360, you will find that it now has full networking capabilities while the HT-RC370 throws in Audyssey MultEQ XT processing to the final mix.

Both of these are network-capable receivers, so it makes perfect sense for them to support streaming PC audio and Internet radio from different service providers including Pandora, Rhapsody, Napster, SiriusXM Internet Radio, Slacker, Mediafly and vTuner – not to mention being compatible with Windows 7 and DLNA. Via an Internet connection, the process of providing future updates to the receiver's firmware is made painless.

These networking models are also more than capable of taking advantage of Onkyo's free Remote App for iPod, iPhone, or iPad to control the A/V receiver. They will also not shun the recently announced UWF-1 Wireless USB Adapter which delivers an IEEE 802.11b/g/n connection to access music on a home network.

If you happen to be a huge movie and home theater buff, then rest assured that these receivers will come with their fair share of HDMI inputs in order to accommodate any likely combination of cable TV, satellite, and disk player sources, 3D included. Other connectivity options on the HT-RC370 and HT-RC360 include USB, Ethernet, and Onkyo’s proprietary Universal Port (U-Port), not forgetting the full range of traditional audio and video sources.

The Onkyo HT-RC370 and HT-RC360 will be out later this month for $849 and $549, respectively.

Keyport offers Mini LED for your Keyport Slide

Posted: 05 Apr 2011 06:00 AM PDT

Keyport, the name behind their Keyport Slide V.01, is now putting up on offer their very own Mini LED peripheral – or should we say, accessory? The Keyport Slide was a USB flash drive insert, and so its latest addition, the Mini LED insert, was specially designed to fit securely in the Keyport Slide V.01. Being more than ready to ship to the masses, this lightweight and compact accessory will consolidate keys as well as additional personal items, ranging from a USB flash drive to a bottle opener or LED.

Measuring roughly the same size as that of a standard key fob which holds only one key, the Keyport is more than capable of offering access to each of the half dozen ports using a single slide of a thumb.

With Keyport's latest water-resistant Mini LED, you will find that a couple of lithium ion batteries used here are more than able to last up to 15 hours of non-stop Care Bear shine. These LEDs are bright enough to illuminate darkened hallways as well as difficult to find keyways, and they will also go their length to shine the light (pun not intended) on the inadequacies of a bulky keychain – obviously bigger is not better in this case.

Tipping the scales at a mere 2.1 ounces when the Keyport is fully loaded, it ought to fit in snugly into your small jeans pocket without missing a beat. Apart from that, Keyport is also more than able to accommodate the vast majority of key types including most high security and chipped auto keys. Good news for those wearing expensive clothes – Keyport will not rip up your pants pockets or stab you in the leg, while doing away with the irritating pocket jingle in the process.

Not only that, Keyport was specially designed to eliminate scratches on the handlebars that happen simply because your keys were dangling around, and you need not tote a separate key to boot. With an optional quick-release lanyard letting you add additional loose items such a car alarm fob, the Keyport is starting to sound like a winner in every department.

Interested parties can pick up the Keyport starter bundle for $79, where that will come with a Keyport Slide V.01, six color Nodes, six key Blades and a detachable quick-release lanyard. If you want the LED light, then that will cost you another $9.99.

These days, if you want to keep up with the Joneses or even outdo them, then you must have some sort of hard hitting financial firepower – or plenty of creativity, of course. Fuuvi USB Mini Digital Camera

Posted: 05 Apr 2011 05:00 AM PDT

A USB flash drive is just that, or is there more than meets the eye? The answer is in the affirmative when you bring the Fuuvi USB Mini Digital Camera into the picture – we’re talking about a device that not only carries your favorite files on-the-go, it also allows you to shoot secret shots of upcoming devices assuming you’re working in some sort of top secret assembly plant for one of the major hardware manufacturers.

Hailing from Audiocubes, this puppy comes in a wide range of colors, but don’t expect too much from something so small especially when it comes to its resolution count. We’re talking about 3.1-megapixel stills as well as the ability to shoot video in 1280 x 1024 resolution which can later be transferred and viewed on another computer simply by plugging it into any available USB port. Of course, you will need to supply the memory yourself, which comes in the form of a microSD memory card.

The IDAPT I4 Universal Charging Station

Posted: 04 Apr 2011 09:38 PM PDT

We have reported on the IDAPT before, like the i2, and I have recently got a chance to try out the i4.

I am pretty certain that I tried out an IDAPT before, and it is essentially a wireless charger without the wireless. Powermat it is not, but the i4 comes with six tips, and three tips can be plugged into the mat. From there, a mobile device such as a phone, camera, portable gaming system, or Bluetooth headset can be plugged in and charged.

I found that the i4 has a mat with a glossy look to it, and charging it involves turning a switch with an LED indicator light to show that the device is charging. I don’t remember the on and off switch being there on other models.

The IDAPT i4 comes with six tips that include the miniUSB, microUSB, Samsung 4, Sony Ericsson 2, iPod/iPhone, and Nokia 2. There are other tips available, which include ones that can charge AA and AAA batteries. By the way, there is a USB port on the side for charging any gadget with a USB charging accessory.

You should be able to get the IDAPT i4 on the IDAPT site for about $59.99 right now.
