Electric Car to make 16,000 mile trip

Posted: 01 Jun 2010 04:25 PM PDT

Anyone remember when we reported on the electric car that goes 1,000 km on a single charge? Well, there is an electric car from the Racing Green Endurance Team that plans to take their SRZero Electric car 26,000km (16,000 miles).

The SRZero electric car is sponsored by Imperial College London, and the trip it plans to make is down the Pan-American Highway, starting in Northern Alaska and going to Tierra del Fuego on the tip of South America.

As you can see here, the SRZero car is it weighs just 1,433 lbs and has a 363 V8 in the back. Of course, the batteries will make the car weigh more at 2,600 lbs, and they have a 248 mile range at 386 horsepower. I have included a video of it in action that you can see after the jump if you want to know more about its history.

It also bears a strong resemblance to the Mach 5 from Speed Racer. Maybe they will put one of those special contraptions in it that will make it jump and flip, but I’m pretty sure that Speed Racer’s car was probably not battery powered.

Still, the SRZero is built for some serious cross country racing. Perhaps if there is some electric car racing, it will be the first to cross the checkered flag.

Microsoft: “Excuse us, while we Pinch-the-Sky”

Posted: 01 Jun 2010 03:59 PM PDT

Once again, Microsoft Research is up to something amazing with Pinch-the-Sky. This project is currently a geodesic dome with cardboard shingles, and with an omni-directional projector in the middle that is gesture and speech sensitive.

One of the things that this thing can do is show the viewer the universe like nothing else. You can watch the video after the jump and see the user scroll through galaxies and stars, and magnify planets like an iPhone app. All of the stellar information comes from telescopes, and the user can even say things like “Saturn”, and the program will focus on Saturn.

It reminds me of these rooms on the U.S.S. Enterprise that are devoted to “Stellar Cartography”. It’s a heck of a lot better than looking at the infinity of space with two-dimensional maps.

Of course, Pinch the Sky has other applications too. For example, you can know what it feels like to be in a snow globe. It also has some weird diagram of social networking that really confused me.

Yeah, those don’t sound too useful. Still, I wouldn’t mind getting a geodesic dome and an omni-directional projector so I could do my daily work. Man, I could have hundreds of screens surrounding me, each one running some different application! Not only that, it would be cool to work under a geodesic dome.

Keep on working, Microsoft Research, keep on working.

FPS games to teach medics

Posted: 01 Jun 2010 03:28 PM PDT

In case you are one of those people who think that First Person Shooter games are nothing but a vain activity, then you should know that they are sometimes used to train for combat.

I’m sure that comes as no surprise, as what could be better for training a soldier to go into enemy territory than an FPS game. Believe it or not, these are also being used to train medics.

What you are seeing here are screenshots from the Tactical Combat Casualty Care Simulation (TC3), and this FPS is the game you want your medic to play.

Sure, you want the medic to also be a trained doctor, but do you think that they cover how to treat wounds on the battlefield in medical school? That is a completely different animal.

Fortunately, the TC3 simulator uses actual combat scenarios from a virtual version of Afghanistan. Now medics-in-training will know a little of what it is like to treat injured soldiers on the battlefield.

One of the skills that TC3 teaches is bedside manner. Yes, this is important when treating a soldier, and all skills are tallied at the end of the game for a final score.

Well, I think we all know that there is a difference between reality an a simulator. I suppose the difference here is the fun of a video game and the real-life Saving Private Ryan D-Day situation.

Tower Lava Motion Lamp

Posted: 01 Jun 2010 03:00 PM PDT

After a while it becomes time that you need to grow up just a bit in order to appear respectable to the rest of the adult world.  Although it’s silly, your average lava lamp isn’t going to make you look the best to your very serious adult friends.  However, you might be able to pull off this tower since it has a slightly different shape that makes it look slightly more modern than like something a college student might own.

You can either choose to pick up the jet black or purchase pretty pink.  Either one will cost you the same amount, so it just depends on your color preference.  The lamp stands over 4 fee tall and functions just like your average lava lamp.  Just turn it on and you’ll get to watch the black wax bob up and down.  You can purchase one for $67.77 through Amazon.

Hydro Powered Calculator

This isn’t the first of the water powered gadgets, but it is definitely an attractive new design.  Plus besides looking good on your desk, it allows for you to live your life just a little more eco-friendly.  You also won’t have to worry about constantly replacing batteries, instead you just refill a tiny capsule and you’re ready to go.

The Hydro Powered Calculator has a total of 3 small capsules that you fill up with water.  The body itself is made out of clear plastic, which gives you the geeky joy of being able to see right into the insides of your gadget.  Then it has the bright green buttons, sorry, no other colors are available for those of you that are not fans of green.  It stands 2 inches tall by 5.25 inches long by 3 inches wide.  You can purchase this for $10.99 through Perpetual Kid.

Night Ize ZipLit LED Zipper Light

Posted: 01 Jun 2010 12:59 PM PDT

If you ever felt like you just needed a little more light in your life, now you can pretty much have a light installed on virtually anything you’re wearing.  This zipper light is definitely proof of that fact.  It’ll help to light your way a little and make sure that others can see you when you’re on foot in the dark.  Which is always a smart move if you enjoy those late night strolls.

I can’t say that it ever really occurred to me to wear a light on my zipper, but apparently someone thought it was smart enough to turn it into an actual product.  These zipper lights come in a set of white or you can purchase red instead.  Each set has a total of 2 lights for a pretty decent price.  You can pick them up for $5.99 through Cyberguys.
