Escape Capsule offers iPhone 4 protection

Posted: 26 Aug 2011 08:30 AM PDT

By now, you know about Mr. Jobs stepping down as CEO of Apple. Perhaps the new CEO, Tim Cook, might want to look into these EscapeCapsules.

Okay, that sounded weird. I’m not implying that Mr. Cook needs to escape in any way from his new position at Apple. The EscapeCapsule isn’t something that one uses to quickly leave, but it is something to protect the iPhone 4. Right now, Catalyst has put their Escape Capsule on Kickstarter, but it really should be an official Apple accessory as it is downright useful for protecting an Apple asset.

What you are seeing here is an exo-skeleton made from high-impact clear polycarbonate, which can protect against the elements, including water. It also can protect against impacts like scratches, and while I don’t have the exact specs, it will go underwater.

The EscapeCapsule protects the hardware buttons, as well as the touchscreen. It also comes in a variety of colors and has glow-in-the-dark rubber bumper and lanyard.

I’ve seen a lot of iPhone protecting accessories before, and this one looks very, very good. If you pledge $50, you can pre-order the EscapeCapsule now. Catalyst intends to sell the case for $70 when it hits the market, so that is a pretty good deal.

Charge a phone while you walk

Posted: 26 Aug 2011 08:15 AM PDT

We all know that we make a lot of kinetic energy just by moving around, and we all need energy to power our mobile devices.

This is why researchers at the University of Wisconsin in Madison are working on a harvester that stores all the energy that we create by strolling, running, or walking.

Tom Krupenkin, a UW-Madison associate professor of mechanical engineering, says that human beings generate a kilowatt of power while sprinting. That is more than enough to power laptops, flashlights, and mobile phones.

This technology that you see in the sole of the shoe here uses reverse electrowetting. It is the process by which the energy of moving liquid is converted into electricity, and the energy generated through walking is about 20 watts of electricity.

The developers of this technology created a company called InStep NanoPower, and envision their first product as the “Walk and Charge”. I suppose that we are looking at a future where we connect our devices to our shoe when we get to where we are going and work on our laptops, cellular phones, and other devices. According to my Source, this makes a cell phone battery last 10 times longer.

Of course, there is a problem with the cord connected to one’s shoe. Perhaps there could be a removable battery pack on the sole, but it might smell funny when placed on the table.

MIT Student creates his own grappling-hook gun

Posted: 26 Aug 2011 08:00 AM PDT

Grappling hook guns. From Batman to Rorschach from Watchmen, everybody wants them, but nobody really makes them. Unless there is some sort of spy company that actually makes them. Sort of like Q did for James Bond.

An MIT mechanical engineering student has essentially given the world what it wants as he has created a full-functioning grappling hook gun.

You can see a video of it after the jump, and it is made with some ordinary parts like a chemical fire extinguisher, copper pipe, hose clamps, blowgun, a 20 ounce CO2 canister, and it is mounted on NERF N-Strike Raider Rapid Fire CS 35.

As you might have guessed, this is an Instructables project, by a user named “crreed”. He certainly has me wanting to build one of these bad boys, but I won’t be shooting pictures of Osama bin Laden.

No way. I would be in a big city, atop a tall building, and then I would aim for a fire escape or something secure. Once I was was sure the hook was going to hold my weight, I would swing like Batman.

Yeah, right, like I really would do that. Still, you have to wonder if it is legal to own a grappling hook gun. I mean, you could do some serious damage if you hit someone in the chest, like in Watchmen. I can’t remember if that happened in the movie, but I remember it from the comic book. Honestly, I think it is comic books that made me want to try swinging from buildings with a grappling-hook gun.

Amco No Fuss Silicone Egg Cracker

Posted: 26 Aug 2011 06:30 AM PDT

Forget about cracking nuts – there is just something about whipping up a dish of fried noodles while throwing an egg into it for that added zest of flavor. While Chinese chefs are extremely adept at cracking open an egg using but one hand, emptying all of the gooey goodness into the hot work and throwing away the shell into a nearby dustbin, those of us who lack the finesse and experience will have to make do with a couple of hands, sometimes even cracking the eggshell in a way that some bits and pieces of the shell falls into the mix.

That’s no longer a thing of the future in your kitchen with the $8.57 Amco No Fuss Silicone Egg Cracker – this little puppy takes the fuss, mess and germs out of your egg-cracking activity. Not only that, you need not worry about fishing egg shells from the bowl, either, and since your hand never really touches an egg, it further reduces the chances of transmitting bacteria to and fro.

There is nothing quite as romantic as being with your loved one under the light of a full moon – just make sure he’s not a vampire or werewolf and you’re good to go. For those who miss the soft glow of the moon, how about bringing the moon right into your bedroom? That’s now possible with the Moon Clock which retails for $32 a pop – allowing you to sleep under the stars (actually, just the moon since you will need to provide your own glow-in-the-dark stars on the ceiling) right in the comfort of your own bed.

Specially designed using 65 different actual photographs of the moon, this glowing clock will not only remain close to you always, it also lets you know just what time it is. Made out of a combination of paper, plastic and glass, the Moon Clock will be powered by a single AA battery. Definitely one of the cooler looking devices to have in the bedroom, and it sure as heck beats the ordinary plastic clock from IKEA.

This is what Bracketron delivers with the Style-iT stylus, where it delivers added control on your touchscreen device while making sure that no smudges appear on your device’s display – meaning the hanky you have in your pocket? As for the integrated ballpoint pen, it makes for a convenient and quick note taking companion – after all, with a clip attached to the Style-iT, it will be a snap to stash away in your pocket, briefcase, notepad, or basically anywhere else where you can clip the Style-iT onto it. Depending on your preference, the Style-iT will come in black, white and similar stylish colors as the Apple Smart Cover – that also comprises of orange, green, pink and blue. Not exactly a complete rainbow, but at least it is a start and won’t look out of place when paired with your iPad 2.

Just what will you use the Stlye-iT for? It is perfect for sketching, drawing and photography apps, including writing, tapping, dragging and basically other kinds of activity that requires a high level of accuracy compared to your fingertip. As the stylus boasts of an omni-directional soft tip that will be able to adapt to virtually all kinds of writing style – never mind if you’re right handed or a southpaw.

The Bracketron Style-iT will be able to work on basically all touchscreen devices, making sure they remain free of fingerprints and smudges, also allow you to navigate your device through in a quick and easy manner.
