Animatronic doors could scare the Tootsie Rolls out of trick-or-treaters this Halloween Posted: 19 Sep 2011 11:26 AM PDT I remember visiting Disney’s Haunted House ride, and being more than slightly creeped out by the doors that were banging loudly, as if some monster behind them was trying to break out. This Animatronic door is incredible advancement that gives a visual appeal. You seriously need to watch the video after the jump if you want to a good scare. This effect is as simple as putting a 22-inch LCD monitor with a DVD of Mr. Tough Guy trying to break through the “glass”. The pneumatics are queued at the appropriate moments so it looks like the prisoner might succeed in breaking out. Since it is close to Halloween, I am guessing whoever made this must be prepping for the trick-or-treaters. I can imagine that a lot of parents will have to be consoling a lot of kids after visiting this house. Hey, might I suggest a bigger approach? Perhaps you can use a 70-inch flatscreen TV and use a DVD of a giant monster trying to break out of the house. I don’t know how you will make the house shake. Yeah, I really hope to see more advancements of this technology in the future. And you thought those DVDs of the “haunted noises” was going to scare the pants off visiting trick-or-treaters. Memory City turns your flash drives into a metropolis Posted: 19 Sep 2011 10:56 AM PDT I just recently gave away some of the old flash drives that I have acquired through various press conferences that I have been to over the years. I wish that I had figured out this use for flash drives. This is Memory City, and it is designed to turn your flash drives into miniature buildings in this cute little town. It can hold up 4 GB flash drives, and it also has places for the caps for the drives. Considering that I am always losing those caps, I’m glad someone is making something to beat this problem. There is also a place for 3 microSD cards and 3 SD cards. My Source mentioned nothing about holding a note, so that would be a bonus, right? Sadly, this Memory City is really just a place to hold memory sticks. What I really want to see is a Memory City that is connected to the computer, so you can actually the flash drives and memory cards. To me, a computer connection doesn’t seem that hard to make, but hey, I didn’t make Memory City. If the makers of Memory City want to make that aforementioned upgrade, they are feel free to do it without any lawsuit from me. You should be able to purchase design3000.de for about $14 in either white or red. Check out the Coolest Gadgets 2008 Gift Guides, Christmas shopping made easy. WhatWasThere application allows iOS users a glimpse into the past Posted: 19 Sep 2011 10:27 AM PDT One of things I always admire about period piece movies is the way they can transport us back in time and show what big cities look like back in the thirties, forties, or other black-and-white eras. Most of the big cities that I have visited are over a hundred years old, and I often wonder what they look like back in the day. Fortunately, this iPhone app known as WhatWasThere gives iOS users precisely that. Thanks to the power of crowdsourcing, the application allows its users the chance to see “a visual historic record of the world’s streetscapes”. Photos can be uploaded and tagged with a year and location. If you want to see if your favorite place, then you can download the application for free and examine the application’s Map to see if they have some shots of it. If it does, the available photos will show up with the thumbnail, year, and even the distance from where you are. Using the application is simple as the user can put the old-time photo in full-screen mode, and then aim the camera of his or her iDevice in the direction of the photo’s location. By dragging a slider bar, you can get the now-and-then perspective. Something tells me that we are going to see a lot of applications like this. I predict that whoever perfects this type of technology will really make a killing. I just checked the Android Market, and there is sadly no compatible version. The developer, Enlighten Ventures, plans to release a keyword search based on title and description, so you can see virtually any location in the old times. Glo Nightlight with Glowing Balls Posted: 19 Sep 2011 06:30 AM PDT You know how it is with kids – they want to be comforted at night whenever it starts to get all dark, and some of them find it difficult to get to sleep if parents do not chase out all the (imaginary or otherwise) monsters out of the room, if any. Well, a little bit of light might provide courage to your little ones to sleep alone at night, and you probably won’t go wrong with the $79.99 Glo Nightlight with Glowing Balls. I must say that the Glo Nightlight does somewhat resemble alien plant life to a certain extent, where it features three stems that hold a glowing ball each. At the base lies the secret to its “life” – it is where those lights get charged, so whenever it becomes dark enough, the balls will light up to provide some level of illumination, giving enough light to see what’s going on around while not being too bright that one cannot fall asleep. It will last up to 30 minutes though, so make sure your kiddo enters dreamland by then. Check out the Coolest Gadgets 2008 Gift Guides, Christmas shopping made easy. Posted: 19 Sep 2011 06:00 AM PDT The sound of Angry Birds and snorting pigs are common enough these days, considering the amount of devices that the highly addictive game has appeared on thus far. You are about to get a visual reminder of this group of highly charged (and strung) avian friends in the form of the £49.99 Angry Birds Speaker. I guess the group of birds aren’t too content with flinging themselves at green porkers, but rather, want to shout it out by coming in the form of a speaker. It will not only be compatible with the plethora of iDevices out there, this officially licensed Angry Birds speaker will also sport a 3.5mm jack that will see it work with just about all the other compatible devices out there. With 30W RMS of power, you can bet your bottom dollar that all those squawks will sound all the more menacing than ever before, along with the classic “Wheeeeeeeee!” sound. ViewSonic has quartet of portable entertainment solutions coming your way Posted: 19 Sep 2011 05:30 AM PDT When you talk about ViewSonic, chances are your mind would be transported over to images of cheap monitors that tend to punch above their weight, but this time around, take a break from monitors. ViewSonic has just announced that they will be previewing a quartet of entertainment solutions at Pepcom’s upcoming Holiday Spectacular event. Among these four devices would be the ViewPad 7x, the ViewPad 7e, the V3D245 and V3D231 LED monitors, and the PJD5523w projector. We will look at the remaining three after the jump, but just what does the Android-powered ViewPad 7x bring to the table? For starters, it will have the latest Android 3.2 Honeycomb operating system running in the background, letting you access Android Market apps for that increased level of productivity on the go. Connectivity options include HDMI and DLNA, while your senses will be treated to dual cameras and SRS surround sound capability. With a 1,024 x 600 multi-touch display and NVIDIA Tegra 2 dual core processor running inside, this is not a tablet to be trifled with. As for the ViewPad 7e, this 7″ tablet won’t see any Honeycomb action, but rather, the smartphone-centric Android 2.3 Gingerbread operating system alongside Amazon Services for Android integration, Amazon Kindle for Android for eBook reading, and RiteTouch for writing straight onto the screen itself. You can always output its display via HDMI to a compatible device, while Flash support and dual cameras round off the rest of the features. The “twin terrors” of the 3D-ready LED monitors known as the V3D245 and V3D231 will deliver a 2ms response time, 20,000,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio, HDMI 1.4 connection and integrated SRS Premium Sound to excite your senses with an unsurpassed 3D experience. The 24″ V3D245 will be able to support over half a thousand 3D games in 1080p thanks to its integrated NVIDIA 3D Vision wireless emitter, while the smaller 23″ V3D231 will have TriDef 3D software that lets you play over 370 PC-based 3D games. Last but not least is the PJD5523w WXGA DLP projector which sports a widescreen 1,280 x 800 WXGA native resolution, and a high brightness level and contrast ratio of 2,700 ANSI lumens and 3.000:1, respectively. Time to start saving up for what ViewSonic has in store for the holidays, no? Coolest Gadgets UK – For all your UK centric tech and gadget news. Evolution Robotics Mint Plus Automatic Floor Cleaner Posted: 19 Sep 2011 05:00 AM PDT You know, back in the day there was the standard broom and dust pan used to get dirt all cleaned up from the floor, but these days, you not only have powerful vacuum cleaners, but we are also looking at vacuum cleaners which are smart enough to get the job done even when you are not around the home. Yes sir, we’re talking about robotic vacuum cleaners, where these devices will roam around your floor, breaking up family after family of dust bunnies without any remorse. With a fair number of such robotic vacuum cleaners going around (literally), having one more introduced to the market should not come across as a surprise to anyone. Evolution Robotics throws their hat into the ring this time around, with their next generation robotic floor care unit known as the Mint Plus Automatic Floor Cleaner. It will continue where its predecessor left off, where you will be able to enjoy an enhanced wet cleaning system, not to mention having a self-dispensing reservoir, a faster recharge time as well as a higher capacity (and physically larger) battery which delivers up to four hours of run time. It is said to offer consumers a simple, easy and affordable way to keep up with life’s demands while maintaining a clean and healthy home. Surprisingly, the Mint Plus won’t break the bank at all, where it will start from $299.99 onwards, while you can always pick up the previous generation model for a Benjamin less. The Mint Plus was specially designed for hard surface floor cleaning, where it will get to work by automatically dusting and mopping hard surface floors using popular cleaning cloths, including the Swiffer brand Dry and Wet Cloths (other similar products will also do). Guess that labrador of yours that sheds heavily all year round won’t be that much of a hassle to upkeep any more, since the Mint Plus will get to work daily to remove all unwanted (or most, at least) fur from the floor. Those with plenty of carpeting might want to look elsewhere though, since it does not seem as though the Mint Care is going to do a good job.
