Smush Can Self-Powered Trash Compactor Posted: 20 Jan 2010 03:00 PM PST Trash compactors are somewhat common, I still know very few people that actually own one. However, most people at least have knowledge of them existing. If you don’t like the idea of wasting energy on a trash compactor, then this one might interest you. It’ll compact your trash like normal, but it manages to power itself instead of sucking away more energy. Alright, so it’s not entirely self-powered, but at least it still compacts the trash. It requires a little bit of extra energy from you though. To work it, you just have to push down on the handle itself. It’s a happy medium between an electric trash compactor and just jamming down the trash with your bare hands. It’s made out of heavy duty stainless steel and can hold twice as much trash as your normal trashcan. You can purchase it for $139 from Uncommon Goods. Intellisteam from Morphy Richards Posted: 20 Jan 2010 02:37 PM PST I have one of those steam cookers, and I use it a lot. Unfortunately, I only have one of them, so I have to cook my courses one at a time. With the Morphy Richards Intellisteam, there are three individually controlled heaters which allow for setting different times on these containers. So if you can have fish in one, vegetables in another, and potatoes in the last one for a complete meal for up to four people. The Moprhy Richards Intellisteam comes with a blue backlit LCD screen as well as a visible water gauge so you can see how much steam you’re giving your cooking. Hopefully, it isn’t too much, or your food will be chewier than it normally is. Fortunately, the Intellisteam also comes with a 40 minute auto keep-warm function so you won’t overcook something. By the way, you can pre-program your cooking times and even save them in the internal memory for later use. As an added safety feature, the Intellisteam has a Boil Dry safety cut-out alarm that will sound if the water boils dry. It also has a removable drip tray, and the accessories on top are dishwasher safe. You should be able to purchase the Morphy Richards Intellisteam for about $160 from the Morphy Richards site for about $160. Thunder Generator creates some wicked shockwaves Posted: 20 Jan 2010 02:16 PM PST Do you know what you are looking at? It looks like a firehose, doesn’t it? You know how firehoses can disperse crowds? This device, known as the Thunder Generator, can also disperse crowds, and can do a better job. The Thunder Generator uses ordinary sound with liquid petroleum, cooking gas, and air to create explosions that can create such a shockwave, that they can literally blow people away. That is, if a person is standing close enough, say, 30 feet, it could kill that person. If a person is standing at the other end of a football field, than they will be stunned by the blast. The designer, ArmyTec, hopes that this device can be mounted anywhere, and then combined with other Thunder Generator barrels to create a sort of shield around something. Believe it or not, this device was once used by Israeli farmers to scare birds away. Right now, this amped-up version of the Thunder Generator is starting to scare me away. Yeah, I’m not looking forward to a future where these devices are used to keep crowds at bay. I suppose it would be better than Soylent Green. Still, if you see this thing coming to a mob, then you had better get as much space between you and it as possible. Non-Electric Candle Holder won’t raise the power bill Posted: 20 Jan 2010 02:00 PM PST This is probably the most non-electric device to ever be plugged into an outlet. I’m usually in desperate need of more outlets thanks to living in a very old house. However, if you have outlets to spare then this is one way to make sure that they stay packed full. Yet your power bill will never go up and you’ll get a bit more lighting. The down side of this strange candle holder is that if you have some drippy candles then all the cords and flooring below are going to end up a bit more waxy. Alright, so it won’t shine as brightly as a lamp being plugged into the wall, but at least it’s better than absolutely nothing. To purchase your very own it’ll cost you about $24. Although one small suggestion, buy non-drip candles. Source: UberReview Check out the Coolest Gadgets 2008 Gift Guides, Christmas shopping made easy. Design a Star Trek Phaser, for real Posted: 20 Jan 2010 01:47 PM PST We reported on a Star Trek Phaser before, but that was a toy. What you see here is the real deal. Well, as real as it can probably be with DIY tech. This modded weapon is powered by a FlexDrive DC/DC, and it uses an off the shelf laser driver. In fact, I believe that it is an ordinary laser from a Blu-ray device. There is a video of this phaser after the jump so you can see it in action, and you will note how it can pop balloons from a distance. By the way, it can also burn skin. You may note that you cannot see the entire beam, as in the photo. I believe the photo uses a smoke effect, which is really the only way to see most lasers. Granted, this isn’t as good as a real Star Trek phaser, and you can’t set it to stun, kill, or vaporize. Still, it is what we all want, which is a real genuine laser. It is a laser that can hurt people, and could easily cause some blindness. In other words, something tells me that even if these phasers get mass-marketed, you’ll probably need a special permit. I suppose that should come as no surprise. If you can’t wait for the day when you have to get a phaser license, you can make one right away. Check out the instructions here. Posted: 20 Jan 2010 01:16 PM PST If there were ever an ultimate geeky gift for your eco-loving Valentine, then this is it. Not only does it feature big pretty hearts, but it comes in a very sappy color combination as well. Plus it offers you an endless supply of sweet music without every having to swap out any batteries. All you have to do is wind it up several times and it’ll keep the music going. In addition to playing the radio, it can also charge up your cellphone. Which could come in handy if you ever find yourself stranded without any other method to charge your phone. It might not be quite as good as roses and chocolates to some, but it might appeal to your significant other. It comes in bio-degradable packaging to add to the eco-friendly aspect. They don’t say how many twists it will take to keep things powered, but it probably won’t be too much. You can purchase it for £13.99 or about $23.
