A Friend for Any Beer Fan

Have you ever been into a bar where the bartender is part customer server, part entertainment? You certainly remember the locations with behind-the-bar antics. Usually it involves bottles and colorful drinks, flips and turns. But what about us beer and ale drinkers in the world? How do we get entertainment? Popping a top sure seems mellow in comparison to flipping bottles.

BBbarfly, devised by a former bartender and an engineer, adds a little pizzazz to the art of serving and drinking beer.  As any bartender or 'beertender' will attest the sheer volume of beers opened require a reliable tool. And you need a tool the professionals count on. Sure it is a bottle opener. But open it up and take a look. The high quality stainless steel means you can open hoards of bottles. Contact BBbarfly and they can look into customizing a unit or units for you. What a great way to keep your company’s name out there.

The specs are just half the fun of BBbarfly though. What you do with the unit makes it all worth it. BBbarfly creates Trick Tutorials for your device – new entertaining moves to open, close, flip, spin and amuse  Hop on their website to learn tricks like the John Wayne or the Kickback or my personal favorite, the Transformer. You finally have a chance to perfect those butterfly knife tricks – without the blade! Tricks continue to multiply as BBbarfly users submit content to the Flair Beertending section of the site too. And if that is not enough, add some style with a belt holster for $15.

The Aesthetician's Ultrasonic Hand Moisturizer

Let's face the facts – no one likes having dry skin, and you can more or less say that this is anathema to those who are of the female gender. After all, dry skin looks ugly, and when the condition gets really bad, you start to itch all over the affected area. Well, perhaps it is time to slap on plenty of moisturizer, but that can end up being extremely expensive in the long run, so why not settle for something that is slightly different, albeit it might cost you a wee bit more as an initial investment? I am referring to the $149.95 Aesthetician’s Ultrasonic Hand Moisturizer, which is an at-home hand moisturizer that relies on similar technology which professional aestheticians use to rejuvenate dry, chapped skin.

It will make use of distilled or fresh tap water (your choice), where the moisturizer’s ultrasonic transducer will get to work by emitting an oxygenated warm or cool hydrating mist that is seven times smaller compared to water droplets, penetrating deep into moisture-starved skin, ensuring that your hands remain smooth and supple along the way. All you need to do is insert your hands into the front of the unit, and the moisturizer will get to work immediately, where control knobs let you adjust mist output and temperature from about 62° F to 92 F° in a precise manner.

Swimming robot arrives at Australia, breaks record in the process

Having a human swim across an expanse of water like the English Channel is surely an achievement not to be trifled with, but rather, to be celebrated by the rest of the world, but do we do the same when it comes to robots? After all, robots do not have emotions, and they certainly are not out to chase records and all. The thing is, behind each robot is a human (at least that is the way things are at the moment, not until the robot apocalypse happens ala Terminator and we see robots start to make robots…), and certainly the human behind the robot's conception and creation must be pretty darn proud if said robot was able to perform amazing tasks. Case in point, this particular self-controlled swimming robot which actually completed a journey from San Francisco all the way to Australia, covering a record-breaking 9,000 nautical miles (that would be 16,668km just in case you were wondering), a trip that required the PacX Wave Glider to spend more than a year in water to achieve.

Liquid Robotics is the US-based company behind the project, where the PacX Wave Glider's main role is to collect data concerning the Pacific Ocean’s temperature, salinity and ecosystem from the drone itself. The company claimed that the success with PacX Wave Glider's Herculean attempt is proof that such technology could actually "survive the high seas", in their own words.

With a name like Papa Mau, this robot takes on a far more personal character, where it was so named in honour of the late Micronesian navigator Pius “Mau” Piailug, whose claim to fame was his innate ability to look out for ways to navigate through the seas without the need for traditional equipment.

Liquid Robotics said, “During Papa Mau’s journey, [it] weathered gale-force storms, fended off sharks, spent more than 365 days at sea, skirted around the Great Barrier Reef, and finally battled and surfed the east Australian current to reach his final destination in Hervey Bay, near Bundaberg, Queensland.” What other record breaking feats from robots that you would like to see?

Nokia Lumia 620 is new Windows Phone 8 for those on a tight budget

Nokia has just made an announcement for a new Windows Phone 8 powered device, where they have called it the Nokia Lumia 620. This particular bad boy is definitely one that targets the market which is more budget conscious. After all, we do know that the world's economy is not in the best of shapes at this point in time, so it would make perfect sense for smartphone manufacturers to be more sensitive to the needs of those out there who work around a tight budget, juggling their (financial) responsibilities between a family, work, and leisure. Perhaps you are one who wants to give the Windows Phone 8 operating system a go, but do not want to splurge your hard earned cash on a high end Nokia Lumia 920, which is where the Nokia Lumia 620 steps in – perfectly.

Nokia's Lumia 620 would be the company's third and most affordable Windows Phone device to date, and it will join its "elder" siblings in the market, which are the flagship Lumia 920 and the Lumia 820. The Nokia Lumia 620 will come with a rather compact 3.8" display, and this would certainly make it the smallest Nokia Lumia device in the market today. Specially designed to be an affordable alternative to the mid-range Lumia 820, it carries with it an estimated retail price of just $249 – prior to taxes and subsidies, of course.

Just what kind of firepower (some say the lack of, I leave that up to you to judge) do you think the Lumia 620 has underneath the hood? For starters, it comes with a dual-core 1GHz processor, a 5-megapixel camera at the back, a front facing VGA camera, and 8GB of internal memory. Of course, we all know that in this day and age, 8GB is just not quite good enough, which is why there is a microSD memory card slot thrown into the mix for good measure, letting you bump up the total memory to 64GB along the way.

Apart from that, it will also be accompanied by a host of all of Windows Phone 8's features alongside Nokia's extremely useful app suite which carries Nokia Drive, Nokia Maps, Nokia City Lens, and Nokia Transit among others. Any takers?

Get Ready for the Slopes

Raise your hand if you will hit the slopes this season! Whether a weekend warrior or just a holiday skier I'm guessing you are checking the snow reports daily. But one thing that always makes me chuckle is the fact that skiing is a mega-aerobic activity. Yet we all think we can just get out there and go for it and be as good as we used to be or as the pros around us. Stop! If you intend to ski soon, you need to be getting in shape and familiarizing yourself with the 'sweet spot' – that centered balance point optimum for best performance.

So get out your ski boots and get yourself a pair of SKiA Sweetspot Ski Trainers. Simply strap your boots into the trainers. Add 1 of 4 sets of balance blocks – green for beginners, blue and red for intermediates and black for experts – and get into your boots. On dry land or in the snow get into your stance. The objective is to balance. You will quickly determine if, in fact, you are properly centered.  If you can't crouch in your stance you have some muscles to train. If you can balance then step it up by switching to more narrow blocks. In addition to basic stance, SKiA helps muscle memory with steering movements too – whether by rotation or edging. Not to worry, you are not totally alone either. Every order includes trainer exercises plus additional drills to do on the slopes. A pair of the SKiA Sweetspot Ski Trainers runs $72.50 (£45, $72AUD or $92 NZD) on the SKiA website and fit adult ski boot sizes. So before you hit the slopes this year ensure that you won't be yard sale guy or gal. Get your balance in check. You will enjoy the results!

Ultimate Retro Table

We laugh when we think about floppy disks now. Yet they were a lifesaver back in the day. And the 3.5" introduced that sweet plastic cover and metal slider thing which meant you could throw them in your backpack or wherever. Ahhh, the good ol' days. But how will future generations ever know the technologies that preceded them? Guess we need to remind them.

Two Berlin-based artists want us to commemorate our computing roots. They sought inspiration for a table from our beloved 3.5″ floppy friends. Neulant van Exel design firm have launched their Floppy Table. Made from hot-rolled steel and stainless steel the unit provides a unique, sturdy and retro statement. The 28" x 18" x 26" (w d h) table contains detail we all remember like insertion arrows and a movable, metal shutter complete with a storage space inside. Each unit is laser marked with a serial number for authenticity too. This trip down memory lane will cost you $930 (before shipping). The product website gives few details but email them if interested or learn more on their Facebook page. For the right user – you know who you are – and the right home I am sure the memories will eclipse any cost. So if you miss the days of floppies there is only one coffee table for you!
