You will be able to choose the variable zoom on both models in order to scan a wide area at low magnification before you zoom in seamlessly to pinpoint a subject, ranging from birds in a field to some other forms of wildlife on your next safari adventure. You can turn on the digital zoom at magnification settings of over 10x, but of course with digital zoom on, you make a sacrifice in terms of image quality. If conventional binoculars could talk, they would definitely turn green with envy when they lay eyes (or should I say, lenses) on the DEV-3 and DEV-5. The former will be able to pull wildlife, sporting subjects and architectural details closer thanks to a maximum magnification of 10x optical, while when you’re set to 3D mode, it boasts of a maximum magnification of 5.4x optical. Electronic autofocus will help keep moving subjects sharply in focus at all times unlike conventional binoculars, and Sony knows that you place ease of use at the top of your list, hence throwing in a comfortably positioned dial that delivers fingertip adjustment of manual focus. Not only that, with electronic autofocus, it will let you focus cleanly on subjects that are less than 0.5″ away when recording in 2D (minimum of 32″ is required, however, when recording in 3D). The DEV-3 and DEV-5 digital binoculars will also boast Optical SteadyShot image stabilization (Active mode), similar to the kind of optical stabilization system that you find in most of the other Handycam camcorders and Cyber-shot cameras from Sony.
