Cardboard Camera Recreations

Posted: 05 Oct 2010 04:37 PM PDT

We’ve grown used to our polished gadgets with plastic and metal casings.  Yet, one man enjoys making his cameras out of something entirely different.  Instead of hard metal pressed up against your eye, he’s making fully functioning cardboard cameras.  It’s be a bit of a change from the usual, but you’d definitely stand out from the crowd.

These insanely detailed cameras are by Kiel Johnson.  Of course not all of his camera designs are actually functional, but some of them at least run like a normal camera.  He makes everything from incredibly ancient recreations to brand new DSLR cameras.  Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like these are actually up for sale at this point.

Mobile Wind Turbine

Posted: 05 Oct 2010 04:04 PM PDT

Getting a little electricity to areas that need more juice is pretty simple most of the time.  However, there are drastic circumstances that make it very difficult, plus it’d be nice to be able to bring along some eco-friendly energy.  Whether it’s a concert in the middle of nowhere or a natural disaster, this concept design is meant to bring some power to all sorts of areas.

I imagine something like this would only work in areas that are capable of keeping a normal wind turbine up and running, but beyond that glitch it is pretty cool. This is made to be driven to any location and put into place by a single operator.  It works like your usual wind turbine, it gets power from the wind and this one will store that energy on a battery.  It is obviously still in the concept stages, so there’s no way to know if it’s actually a practical design.  It’s still interesting to look over though.

Lucky Bums Music Strap Speakers

Posted: 05 Oct 2010 02:55 PM PDT

If you are tired of jamming earbuds into your ears, Lucky Bums has a handy little solution for those that use a backpack on a regular basis.  Although I’m not a fan of listening to other people’s music tastes on a long train ride there are situations when a set of speakers would be nice.  These are capable of handling a little bit of bad weather and will play the music from any old MP3 player.

These speakers aren’t choosy, even if you have a cheap old MP3 player instead of a fancy new iPod it’ll still play your favorite music.  It plays that music through 1W speakers that are held in place by a pair of Velcro cable ties.  They are obviously weatherproof and manage to stay powered with 2 AAA batteries.  You can purchase a set of Music Strap Speakers from Lucky Bums for $29.99.

Life-saving Bazooka wins James Dyson Award

Posted: 05 Oct 2010 12:10 PM PDT

In a situation where there is a drowning victim, having a boat nearby doesn’t always help. In fact, the drowning victim’s life usually hinges on the strength and accuracy of someone’s throwing arm. Here is a better way to throw a precious life-ring: shoot it with this bazooka.

I have a video of the Longreach after the jump so you can see the basic concept. Some of you might be wondering how it is possible to shoot this giant bullet that can magically transform into a floating device, but it uses hydrophobic or rapidly expanding foam. With a range of 150 meters, the victim can hold on until he or she receives the proper help.

The Longreach is designed to be small enough to fit into a boat’s compartments, and easy enough to use with printed instructions on it. It looks like you have two shots make the target, and it looks like fast reloading is an option. The Longreach is equipped with Para-Flares for night-time illumination.

As stated in the title of this post, the designer of the Lifereach, Samuel Adeloju, has been awarded $15,900 for his efforts. His life-saving idea beat out 14 finalists.

Right now, Longreach is in the prototype and testing stage, but should start field trials with Surf Life Saving NSW in Australia in the next few months.

Panasonic welcomes you to the Jungle

Posted: 05 Oct 2010 11:39 AM PDT

Panasonic hasn’t been into the home video game market since the 3DO, which was not able to compete with Sega and Nintendo back in its initial release in 1993.

They have chosen to re-enter the video market with the Jungle, this portable video gaming system here. Considering that Nintendo’s 3DS is coming very soon, some might think that Panasonic’s sudden move into the handheld gaming market could be a mistake.

However, the Jungle has something that other handhelds don’t have. It allows the player to play online games like massively-multiplayer online (MMO) ones. So for those who want to take their World of Warcraft game online, it could be a Jungle out there.

Considering the success of MMO games is due to the PC, they are not usually portable unless you have expensive gaming laptops. If it is possible to get a less-expensive handheld that can do the same thing, then consumers just might be “game”.

This “play anywhere” feature is possible with Wi-Fi and 3G. It should also feature a directional control pad as well as a set of buttons for controller, not to mention a QWERTY keyboard. Little else is known about the games available for it, except some Battlestar Galactica themed ones. We also do not know its release date or price.
