Shower has a built-in fish tank

Posted: 29 Mar 2011 04:55 PM PDT

Every once in a while I see a luxury item that is so cool that I wish that I had thought of it. Then I usually wish I could have it.

It is this shower with a built-in aquarium that is making be particularly green with envy today. It is created by an Italian bathroom fixture manufacturer named Cesana, and no two of these fish tank showers (Plano Acquario) look exactly alike.

I once heard that watching fish can calm you down, so perhaps watching them in a hot and refreshing shower will be especially nice. I can’t help but wonder how the hot water will affect the temperature of the tank, but I’m sure this has been figured out.

By the way, Cesana does this same designs with a greenhouse, so you can view some plants if you don’t want to see fish. If you don’t want to see fish, plants, or anything of nature, you can always opt for a TV to be put there, the company does that too.

I don’t have a price, but there is something that you should know: the fish tank can be viewed on both sides. Think of it like the fish tank from Finding Nemo. I don’t have a price on this, but you know what they say about “if you have to ask…”

You have got to like the SWITL spatula

Posted: 29 Mar 2011 04:30 PM PDT

Sometimes it is the simple things in life that you appreciate the most. For example, something that can clean up a ketchup or mayonnaise stain without leaving any trace evidence (for lack of a better word).

This is the Furukawa Kikou SWITL robot hand, and I have a video of it after the jump removing an ugly stain. What makes it really interesting is how that it is able to put the stain back, as if the stain was never removed in the first place.

Yes, I don’t really see the value of a robotic hand spatula that can move a stain. Especially when I couldn’t help but notice that it looks like the stain was put on some Teflon coated surface. If this is just your ordinary kitchen counter, then it is worth building the rest of this robot’s body to go with the hand if it can do these speedy clean-ups. This is assuming that the robot hasn’t already been built just yet.

Apparently, the purpose of this robot arm is to create a robot arm for bakeries who want to handle soft substances that are too gooey for ordinary human hands. Honestly, I can think of a few places in my own kitchen where this would come in handy.

Neutral Power Drill combines screwdriver, laser level, and stud finder in one

Posted: 29 Mar 2011 04:01 PM PDT

I am definitely in need of a new electronic screwdriver, as this old Wal-Mart one seems to have out-lasted its short life.

If I waited long enough, perhaps this Neutral Power Drill designed by Tim Bennett will become a reality. Not only is it an electronic screwdriver, but it also includes a stud finder and a laser level.

I believe that the laser level is found in the small black rectangle located just below the screwdriver bit. I have honestly never used a laser level before, so I wouldn’t know too much about that, which is the same as the stud finder.

This screwdriver thing works by a slide back head. I would imagine that if you knew what you are doing, you can find the stud, set up a level place to put a screw, and then put it in. As you can probably tell from my last two paragraphs, I don’t really know what I am doing with a tool like this.

Still, I wouldn’t mind having one of these things to make me a handier handyman. The inventor has entered this particular device in an iF Concept design contest, but who knows whether or not he will win. Even if he does, who knows if this will be manufactured by Black and Decker or some other tool company.

Amazon introduces Cloud Drive, Cloud Player for Web and Cloud Player for Android

Posted: 29 Mar 2011 05:30 AM PDT

Amazon thinks that the future of computing lies in cloud storage, and hence has announced a trio of new services – Cloud Drive, Cloud Player for Web and Cloud Player for Android. Basically, any one of the three allows you to buy anywhere, play your tunes anywhere while making sure your digital music collection remains in a centralized place.

Of course, you can always do it the old fashioned way, which is to start in humble beginnings with 5GB of free Cloud Drive storage, and if you like it enough and feel that life is incomplete without cloud storage, then proceed and make that upgrade move to 20GB of free storage space with the purchase of any MP3 album.

Basically, these services let customers securely store music in the cloud, and they are able to access it at any time of their convenience to play back on any Android phone, Android tablet, Mac or PC. Apart from that, customers are also able to easily upload their music library to Amazon Cloud Drive, and are able to save any new Amazon MP3 purchases straight to their Amazon Cloud Drive for free.

This means you no longer need to go through the hassle of moving music around to different devices, and it eliminates the use of flash drives and cables in the process. To sweeten the deal, all new Amazon MP3 purchases are saved directly to Cloud Drive, where they are stored for free and will not count against a customer's storage quota.

Of course, there is also the issue of security – well, we’re pleased to say that as a customer, you need not worry about losing your music collection to a hard drive crash ever again. All of your digital music files are securely stored on Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3), where each file will be uploaded to Cloud Drive in its original bit rate. Apart from that, you can also purchase your music anywhere, safe in the knowledge that your MP3s are safely stored in Cloud Drive and accessible from any device.

PoachPod for the perfect poached egg

Posted: 29 Mar 2011 05:00 AM PDT

You know these days, whenever anyone mentions the words “poached eggs”, all I can think off is the Angry Birds stage. I can’t help it, everywhere you turn, you see things that have to do with Angry Birds, ranging from movie trailers to backpack clips.

Well, the PoachPod is definitely useful if you’re a fan of poached eggs, as it is touted to offer you the best DIY poached eggs in town, and for just £4.99 to boot! Getting the right amount of heat is an art form and a delicate operation, requiring precise timing and perfect temperature water, although all of the planets need not be aligned.

With the PoachPod, it is a snap – all you need to do is crack an egg into a flexible silicone mold, where you can let it bob about on the surface of gently boiling water for just a few minutes. Whenever it is ready to serve, all you need to do is run a spoon around the inside and turn it out for perfection.

Basketball Return Net

Posted: 29 Mar 2011 03:15 AM PDT

Love shooting hoops all day long? If you’re one who prepares early enough, then summer can’t come quickly enough for you to stay outdoors all day long, throwing your basketball into the hoop as you attempt to make that money shot. Of course, part of the satisfaction is seeing you make your shot, but what happens when you miss it (and by a mile, to boot)?

This is where the Basketball Return Net comes in, where it allows you to practice from just about any distance or direction without having to go through the hassle of chasing down balls when you can spend that time shooting. You will need to mount it to rectangular backboards up to 60″ wide in just a matter of minutes, where the net will extend 15′ from the hoop with its corners attached to a couple of moveable, weighted bases. Those bases will need 50 lbs. of sand, and it will facilitate quick return of free throw and perimeter shots.

At $149.95 a pop, surely your little one might grow up to be the next Michael Jordan or Larry Bird as his natural talent is augmented by practice.

Giant Green Machine motor trike could break a world record

Posted: 28 Mar 2011 05:32 PM PDT

Back in the days when I was riding a Big Wheel, there was the Green Machine. The Green Machine had nothing to do with saving the environment, but it was the Porsche of the Big Wheel cycling trikes with two giant brake levers for some serious spin-outs. At least, that is what the ads showed.

A few guys from Parker Brothers, who have also designed a working Tron Lightcycle, have created this Green Machine Motorcycle trike. It has an 80-inch Harley Davidson Evo engin and is capable of going at speeds of 50 miles per hour. Something tells me I might want to take a class before I get behind the wheel (the big one in front) of this. I have no idea what those controls do, but it reminds me of a Speeder Bike from the Return of the Jedi movie.

I’m not certain why you would want to build this, except for fun. Apparently, Parker Brothers is seeking some sort of approval from the Guinness Book of World Records as the largest wheel on a motorcycle. I am not certain what in the world is the next biggest, or who would try to break this record.

I once heard that our old comedian friend Gallagher created an adult-sized Big Wheel. I’ll bet he would really like this one.

Mechanical Bird uses its own wings to fly

Posted: 28 Mar 2011 05:08 PM PDT

I remember seeing pictures from DaVinci’s manuscripts of flying machines. Many of them were ornithopters, flying machines that use the flapping power that birds use to defy gravity. I remember even reading a short story once called “DaVinci Rising” that depicts the Renaissance great actually succeeding in his accomplishment.

Festo’s SmartBird is able to replicate the process, and has created a gigantic herring gull that can take off by flapping its wings, and can also land as well. There is no propeller or jet engine required, just the same natural power that sets birds to flight. It is all part of the Bionic Learning Network, adapting natural principles to technology to make things work.

As you can see, the SmartBird is about the size of a large Albatross, and has a massive 6.5 foot wingspan. However, it is made of carbon fiber and a polyurethane foam, so it weighs in at about 1 pound. It is powered by a lithium polymer battery, and it has sensors to relay data to ground operators for better control.

I’m not certain what one could use this for, except to make remote control bird toys. Unless it is possible to create a plane that is essentially one big ornithopter. Yeah, I’m not certain how practical that is.
