Clock Face draws its own hands

Posted: 07 Dec 2009 04:12 PM PST

Here’s some tech that I can’t help but report on. If you play the video, you will see a video of a man simply drawing the hands on a clock. If you keep watching it, you will see that he is trapped in a box.

The poor guy. Actually, this guy was filmed prior to this display, which was spotted at Design Miami. Then the footage was put on an LCD clock face.

I think that what is interesting about this technology is that it definitely puts a whole new face on the traditional clock. However, I can’t help but feel sorry for the guy who had to spend twelve hours drawing and erasing the big and little hands. I can’t think of anything more boring.

I also can’t help but think that this clock, cool as it is, would not work well in the real world. One of the whole reasons that you have a clock is so you can look at the time in a quick second. With this clock, you might find yourself waiting several seconds for the man to draw the minute hand.

This is definitely a step in the right direction for making cooler clocks. Maybe future efforts could use something that is computer generated. For example, they could show a CG figure painting the hands. That way, you wouldn’t have to film anything. I’m sure you would probably bore some computer graphics guy somewhere, though.

First Underwater Glider Crosses the Atlantic Ocean

Posted: 07 Dec 2009 03:51 PM PST

ru27flight_300When I reported on the first attempt at an intercontinental jet-pack flight, I stated that it usually takes a Charles Lindbergh transatlantic flight before some new technology literally takes off.

Such was the case of the Scarlet Knight, which is officially the first underwater glider to cross 4,591 miles of the Atlantic ocean. It traveled for 221 days at a pace of about 4 centimeters per second.

The underwater glider was built by a team from Rutgers University, who named it the Scarlet Knight after Rutgers sports even though it is yellow. Rutgers partnered with the Integrated Ocean Observing System (IOOS), the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), Peurtos Del Estado (Spanish Port Authority), the National Oceanographic Partnership Program, and many others.

NOAA assistant administrator believes that an important milestone has been achieved, and “opens new frontiers in oceanography”. He went on to say that “it is through efforts like this that we will continue to learn more about the wonders of the ocean at a critical time for our planet”. I’m assuming that by critical time, he is talking about climate change and other environmental damage.

The Scarlet Knight isn’t the only underwater glider that Rutgers University has. Right now, they have seven of them at the cost of New Jersey. The success of the Scarlet Knight will insure that more underwater gliders will be charting vital information about the ocean.

Recon Technologies making some highly advanced ski goggles

Posted: 07 Dec 2009 03:09 PM PST

recongoggles-thumb-550x449-29652I haven’t been skiing in over a decade, and there were times that I got lost on the slopes. They didn’t have navigation units or cellular phones back then, but this new device from Recon Instruments could turn skiing into a very high-tech experience.

The Recon Instruments ski goggles have a miniature heads-up display that can show the skier’s position on the slopes, as well as the location of his or her friends. You can even use the GPS function to guide the ski patrol to you in case you crash and burn on the slopes.

Not bad, but that is not all they do. It can also display altitude, temperature, as well as recording the skier’s speed the height that he or she has jumped.

It also has a camera, CPU, and storage. The controls are conveniently on the side for easy manipulation, but that might be difficult with a pair of thick gloves on.

Man, I remember back when ski goggles with an anti-fogging fan was a technological advancement. This one looks like you could watch a video or listen to music while waiting in the lift line. What I would have given for a pair of these goggles back in my skiing heyday.

Recon Technologies isn’t planning to release these models until next year. The price is rumored to be quite high, at $350.

Samsonite Trolley Luggage with Micro Scooter

Posted: 07 Dec 2009 03:00 PM PST

samsonite_trolley

Dragging your luggage behind you is about the most boring thing you could possibly do.  It’s just barely better than standing around watching paint dry.  Instead of wheeling around your luggage like usual, you could ride on this Samsonite luggage that happens to have a built-in scooter.  It doesn’t get much more awesome than that.  Instead of feeling weighed down and stressed, you can feel years younger as you swerve around the slow people with the normal luggage.

Luckily, if you no longer want to use the scooter or just aren’t allowed to use it in your current location, the scooter portion can be folded up.  Then you just roll it around like you normally would.  The suitcase itself is so small that it’s entirely possible you may even be able to use it as your carry-on bag.  After all, it is actually pretty slim once it’s all folded up.  Certain details on the scooter are limited though, such as where to pick one up or how much it’ll cost you.

Rocketfish Laptop Case turns into lapdesk

Posted: 07 Dec 2009 02:10 PM PST

It seems laptop case creators are getting smarter and smarter.  Instead of just doing the usual task of protecting your laptop and making it easier to take with you places, it does an extra function.  Just flip it around and you have yourself a handy little laptop desk.  You may not use the desk all the time, but having the option would be nice.  Be it while you’re carpooling or just lounging on the couch, it’d make messing with your laptop a bit more comfortable.

The case itself is not really anything to look at.  It’s not bad, it’s just nothing impressive either.  Since it is so incredibly useful though, it’d be easier to overlook the exterior of the case.  The bag will hold laptops up to 15.4 inches.  It’s made out of foam and rubber materials, which are meant to make the bag last longer and be more lightweight.  You can purchase it for $49.99.

HUGlight Flexible Hands Free Book Light

Posted: 07 Dec 2009 01:14 PM PST

414Fd4OfToL._SS400_

Many of the book lights attach to your book itself.  One thing I’ve never liked about that is that I feel like I’m constantly shifting the light when I turn a page or just need to see a different side of the page.  Now whether or not this HUGlight is the solution for that is debatable.  Yes, it is a bit silly looking but the design would illuminate both pages without having to move it at all.

The device drapes over your neck, which might feel awkward and uncomfortable for some people.  However, if you don’t think that’s going to be an issue, then it’s not too bad.  The flexible wire arm is 9 inches long and covered in a soft foam.  The foam would help make it more comfortable.  It has a 40 hour battery light and uses 4 LED lights.  The HUGlight can be purchased for $14.95 through Amazon.

One-Hand Calculator

Posted: 07 Dec 2009 04:30 AM PST

onehand-calcAre you involved in a job that requires you to crunch numbers on a separate calculator apart from that on your numeric pad? Well, a desk calculator is often one solution that many use, but what about the One-Hand Calculator which makes things easier and more convenient?

Balance your checkbook or tally your taxes at the same time you're writing down the numbers. It takes just one hand to operate this calculator! Press the big, white button, and out pops the LCD display. Slim design fits in your palm and makes numbers easy to key. Auto off after 10 minutes. Just 4¼"L. Includes battery.

You can pick one up for $9.95, but purchase two and save $1 off the retail price for each. Definitely much more portable compared to a desk calculator, although those whose fingers are so used to the regular desk version might take some getting used to. One positive way of looking at it would be to use it as though you were composing a text message on your cellphone while driving – I believe many people have mastered that technique by now :P

Battery Eater

Posted: 07 Dec 2009 04:00 AM PST

battery-eaterSo you’re a big fan of making sure the world remains pristine and green (or whatever there is left at the moment, of course) for your kids while you pass on – so apart from making sure you have a solar-powered heater installed in your home with a Toyota Prius parked in your garage, how about the Battery Eater? “A what?!?”, you ask? Why, a Battery Eater – making sure that every single bit of battery is drained completely before they’re safely disposed.

There may not be enough juice in that AA battery to power your camera, but before throwing it away, feed it to Battery Eater! As this hungry guy eats up the last bit of power, his eyes blink with delight! When he stops blinking, you'll know the power is depleted, and you can safely recycle the battery without concern about a pile of batteries reacting. Magnetic—sticks to the fridge or filing cabinet.

Sounds like a fun $6.95 to splurge on when you’re feeling like a random purchase during this holiday season.

Comply NR-10i earphones

Posted: 06 Dec 2009 06:46 PM PST

comply

Whenever you pick up an iPhone, you can more or less be sure that you’re getting a quality piece of portable media player as well. After all, it is basically an iPod touch with the added capability to communicate with the rest of your friends and family. Having said that, there is an extremely huge market where accessories for either device are concerned (alongside the rest of the iPod family, of course, but I digress). Even average Joes these days want something better than the stock earphones provided with the regular iPhone, which is where third party earphones come in. The Comply NR-10i earphones is just one of numerous third party earphones available, where we shall take a closer look at it right after the jump.

As we know, many countries these days already have laws in place that ban the use of cellphones while driving unless you’re on a Bluetooth headset or on other kinds of hands-free solution. As for the iPhone, the Comply NR-10i will propel the hands-free iPhone experience to the next level, as you know it just oozes with quality – don’t take our word for it, just check out their five-star rating on apple.com/uk for the evidence. Each pair will help reduce the amount of ambient noise coming in, and personal testimonies best convey the message as one consumer states, "I absolutely love these ear buds…They make my commute down Oxford Street enjoyable since I can actually hear my music or mobile conversations."

Specially designed to cater to iPhone users, the Comply NR-10i earphones will rely on a similar patented Comply Foam Technology that is currently seeing action in U.S. Army helicopter crews in order to experience amazing noise reduction, superior comfort and secure in-ear fit, providing clear conversations and music experiences in noisy environments. After all, with more and more people picking up the iPhone all over the world, clearly (no pun intended) an audile solution for crystal-clear conversations is nigh, and the Comply NR-10i seems to deliver. Features include an integrated microphone/function switch on the cable, external music control capability and the ability to utilize the new 3GS Voice Control with the touch of a button. Expect to pick up a pair for £79.95 as it comes with one pair of slim-size Comply Foam Tips, one pair of standard-size Comply Foam Tips and a deluxe travel pouch.
