The Smartphone ECG- You Knew it was Coming

Posted: 27 Jan 2012 08:08 AM PST

Okay, so it used to be that smartphone healthcare applications were simply novelty items that were fun to play around with but served no place in mainstream medicine, but didn’t we suspect that someday your phone or tablet might actually help physicians to save lives and reduce the cost of care?

Welcome Everist Genomics, a relatively new, but fast growing medical technologies company, that has just successfully integrated smartphone and tablet computer technology with truly innovative and finally, medically valuable diagnostics in the areas of cardiovascular disease, metabolic diseases, (like diabetes) and even cancer.  So meet Everist Genomics’ CardioDefender. The CardioDefender is the world’s first FDA-approved  smartphone ECG (electrocardiogram) system that can actually provide physicians and patients with hospital-quality heart rhythm monitoring all done OUTSIDE of the hospital setting.

The brand new CardioDefender utilizes many unique capabilities that let doctors diagnose and treat potentially life-threatening heart arrhythmias that might otherwise be missed.  CardioDefender is the first system to deliver mobile, real-time, beat-by-beat, and quantitative heart monitoring and automated reporting, by combining patented analytical smartphone software with its new Wi-Fi device and electrodes. “Honey, will you get the door? I’m having a cardiogram right now.”

The Defender works by utilizing a sensor bracelet that pretty much looks like a digital watch, the sensor then collects data and shoots it over to your smartphone, which analyzes it then stores it. If you in fact you do have a problem, you will receive an instant alert, but luckily, the data can also be sent to straight to your doctor. Which of course I would require, since the minute my smartphone told me I was having some kind of heart episode, I would certainly follow it up with a heart attack.

CardioDefender has already been deployed at more than 150 medical facilities in the United States for post-approval commercial evaluation and will be made available to physicians all over the world this year.

Posted: 27 Jan 2012 05:56 AM PST

I guess everybody expects that I’m a gadget geek. It would come as no surprise that I have a multitude of electronic devices in every corner of my home. I have smart-phones and laptops, desktops, movie players, movie streamers, recorders, set top boxes, iPods, iPads, Android stuff galore… and an 8 year old child that we affectionately call “the crusher”

So it is certainly my pleasure to introduce you to “the Nabi” . Finally, a 200 dollar kid-friendly android tablet that has a responsive touchscreen, large size app buttons, access to a huge variety of kid appropriate content like music, books, games and movies. The Nabi also has some pretty nifty  parental controls built right in. So, if you have nightmares every time your little darling puts his mitts on your 600 dollar iPad, the Nabi might be able to calm your fears and delight your child, all at the same time. (How often does that happen?)

Nabi has a high-resolution Multi-Touch display that allows kids to easily interact with tons of games and content. Nabi comes with over $150 worth of pre-loaded games, music, apps and books. Nabi is capable of running over 500 applications and games catered to kids and that can all be found in the kid friendly – Nabi App Store.

You'll also find a 1.3 megapixel camera, a mini-USB port,  a built-in microphone, and an audio jack. The Nabi supports WiFi and comes all wrapped up in a pretty rugged kid friendly package. (and after the kiddies hit the sack, you can unlock it with your secret password … shhhh.) It all sounds good to me, but somehow I know “the crusher” is going to get me anyway.

Scrubbing Windshield Wiper Blade

Posted: 27 Jan 2012 05:30 AM PST

Most of us would think that the ordinary wiper blade is good enough to get the job done – that is, ensuring the windshield is clean of debris whenever it rains, or if a pigeon or two decide to poop on your car. Well, the $16.95 Scrubbing Windshield Wiper Blade goes the extra mile in a sense that this patented wiper blade is capable of scrubbing through windshield debris when the situation calls for it, leaving a clear, streak-free view of the road so that your vision will not be betrayed by something as simple as some bird poop that strategically landed right in front of your eyes.

Common windshield wipers tend to smear and obstruct your field of vision, but this patented wiper will use dual blades, where the outer edges will boast of hundreds of tiny triangular scrubbers which are more than capable of completely removing bugs, bird droppings, frost, and dirt within a couple of passes. As for the inner edges of the blades, these will function by channelling water and debris off the windshield, so that you are always greeted by a clean, unhindered view.

The Octopus Chair

Posted: 27 Jan 2012 05:00 AM PST

“Release the Kraken!” Now that is definitely coming out from my mouth, should my bank balance and accountant agree to be enlightened by as much as £35,000 for The Octopus Chair. Yes sir, you read that right – this uniquely shaped piece of home furniture is perfect to set the proper tone at your next dinner party, as you hold a Pirates of the Caribbean theme, while you comfortably park your rear end on this giant octopus. Exquisitely detailed to the extent that you might even think it moved a wee bit (this tends to happen when you get a little tipsy from all the merry making that is going on), this opulent dining chair is ideal to project your already eccentric personality upon the rest of the party goers.

Spanish artist Maximo Riera is the brains (and hands) behind The Octopus Chair, and I do admit, it is definitely going to be extremely challenging to blend in this chair with the rest of the furniture that you have at home. Then again, if you can afford something this expensive, surely you are able to go ahead with an interior makeover to obtain an underwater look and feel. More than 30 professionals, overseen by Riera himself, were employed to make this chair that boasts of rich leather upholstery.

Mobileye driver safety solution

Posted: 27 Jan 2012 04:30 AM PST

The recently concluded CES saw thousands of gadgets, gizmos and even services offered to the masses, and it is virtually impossible to cover all grounds, even if you have a staff count like Engadget. The Mobileye driver safety solution is one nifty gadget that was paraded on the CES showfloor, where this unique solution intends to help drivers avoid and mitigate collisions, while enhancing the overall driver experience.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) claims that majority of accidents occur because of driver inattention in a matter of three seconds right before a collision. While the airbag (which was invented nearly 45 years ago) offers protection for the driver from collisions, the new Mobileye 5-Series intends to take a more active approach with the mantra that “prevention is better than cure”, and in mitigating collisions, our highways should be safer for everyone.

The cutting-edge Mobileye systems comprise a smart camera and proprietary algorithms and microprocessor that will function in unison, detecting and alerting drivers to unintended lane departures, imminent collisions, pedestrians, bicyclists and motorcyclists on the road. Heck, it is also smart enough to “read” speed limit signs, control your hi beams intelligently while alerting you of the most common forms of accidents – rear-end collisions. The third eye of technology, so to speak, and thanks to Bluetooth connectivity, the Mobileye 5-Series will also be able to work in tandem with your smartphone to deliver visual alerts for critical conditions on the roads.

Other safety functions include Mobileye Lane Departure Warning that alerts you whenever you unintentionally veering into another lane, Mobileye Forward Collision Warning (FCW) that alerts you 2.7 seconds before a collision so that you can react accordingly, Mobileye Headway Monitoring and Warning (HMW) that delivers programmable visual and audio alerts before collisions, and Mobileye Pedestrian Collision Warning (PCW) that prevents or mitigates accidents during the daytime thanks to visual and audio warnings that kick in up to 2 seconds before an imminent collision with a pedestrian or bicyclist.

The Mobileye 5-Series is able to fit most types of new and existing passenger cars, trucks, buses, RVs, and will work regardless of whether the sun or moon is up.

VooMote Zapper is now available

Posted: 27 Jan 2012 04:00 AM PST

Have you been looking forward to the VooMote Zapper? Well, I want to play harbinger of good news – the VooMote Zapper is now available on Apple.com, and if you are patient enough, preferring the brick and mortar store setup, it too, will arrive soon in Apple Stores around the country. This elegant dongle will transform your iDevice into a universal remote, Zero1.tv’s latest invention will be battery-free.

Touted to be a versatile mobile solution which is capable of transforming your iOS device into an impressively smart universal remote which is capable of controlling just about all of your A/V gear, this light-weight dongle might be too small for some folks’ liking – considering it is roughly the size of a paperclip, and will play nice with all mobile iOS 5 devices, delivering maximum flexibility and ease of use when connected to your iPhone, iPad or iPod.

The VooMote Zapper is different from base station solutions, as it delivers convenient "room to room" functionality which enables users to access entertainment whenever and wherever they want, using whatever kind of iOS 5-powered devices that one owns. Not only that, the VooMote Zapper is a snap to set up and use, just like how Steve Jobs would want it. After all, don’t you think that it would be rather ironic if the VooMote Zapper was a pain to set up and use, considering how the iPhone, iPod and iPad were designed to be intuitive? Good thing the VooMote Zapper is in line with Apple’s vision, and the moment the VooMote Zapper dongle is connected, the free app will download automatically, prompting you with a set up screen, giving you immediate control over hundreds of thousands of electronic devices.

Alex Gruber, CEO, Zero.tv, says, "The VooMote Zapper was made to bridge the convenience of the old trusty universal remote controls with new App-enabled technology of the future. We wanted to make a solution that people would really pick up and use every day not because it was "gadgety" but because it was, in fact, a better solution for their lifestyles. Features, such as gestures and take a tour were implemented because we know users don't want to take their eyes off their TV for a second or read long manuals."

You can choose from either black or white shades for the Apple certified VooMote Zapper, and regardless of the color, it will retail for $69.99.
