Phonograph 218 Clock Radio

Phonograph_218

Usually my tastes for retro gadgets knows no bounds.  However, I think this bit of technology is a bit much even for me.  However, if you like your devices to be incredibly unique, then you’ll love this Phonograph.  If nothing else, it is most definitely unique.  Plus, it appears to have modern conveniences, such as a clock to wake up with every morning.

You also have the bonus that it quite obviously has a lamp built into it, which is probably the most strange part of the device.  It’d look almost normal were it not for that lamp popping out of the top of the clock.  It seems to have a radio as well that goes with it.  Unfortunately the details on the device are somewhat limited.  Besides that it has an output power of 3W and was created in Guangdong, China.  You can go to the product page and contact the creator to find out how to get your hands on one of these.  They don’t actually list the price though.

Battery-Powered Heated Lumbar Office Chair

cordless-heated-office-chair

The weather is a whole lot colder for a great deal of us.  If you’re having a hard time staying warm this year, this seat manages to heat things up from underneath of you.  With this you could complete your set of heated items.  It’s not enough to have a heated mouse and keyboard, you have to finish it off with a Heated Lumbar Office Chair.

There are only two different temperature settings, but at least both will keep you nice and warm.  One of the best parts of this office chair is that it’s powered by a rechargeable battery.  That means that while you’re rolling around you won’t have a cord to worry about rolling over.  It comes stuffed with memory foam and is designed to relieve those pressure points.  You can purchase the leather chair for the slightly expensive price of $799.95 from Hammacher and Schlemmer.

Ultrasonic Voice Recorder Dog Trainer

Digital-Ultrasonic-dog-trainer-450x216

Training dogs isn’t always easy, some dogs are easier than others.  However, either way it takes a great deal of work and dedication to accomplish anything with your pet.  With this device, hopefully you can make the training process a little more smooth for you.  This voice recorder was created in hopes that it would reinforce all that effort you put into training.  It uses both your own voice commands, as well as the option to use high frequency tones.

The tones can of course only be heard by your dog.  Whereas the voice recordings are just normal recordings of your commands.  It’d make things easier for other members of your family if the dog only listens to you.  With this they could get the dog to quit jumping all over them by pressing a button.  Whether or not it actually works is unknown, but it could be worth testing out.  You can purchase it for $27.69 from UX Sight.

XV-11 robo-vacuum, appropriately from Neato Robotics

Posted: 07 Jan 2010 08:44 AM PST

Neato_XV-11_on-carpetI’m not certain if you’ve ever heard of Neato Robotoics before, but they have created one neato robot vacuum cleaner with the XV-11. It uses Room Positioning System (RPS) Technology that implements laser vision to map the user’s entire floor space and avoid obstacles.

When I say avoid obstacles, I’m not talking about bumping into them to discover that they are there. Special sensors pick up the object beforehand, which results in a “smarter robot that thoroughly cleans an area in less time”. The XV-11 is designed after jet engines, which means that it is one bad sucker.

The RPS Technology gives the XV-11 a 360-degree of the room, and then it learns a cleaning process with SLAM (simultaneous localization and mapping) in order to find the best and most efficient path to clean for the user.

Once it has finished cleaning, the XV-11 will automatically return to its original charger base, so it can recharge itself for when it will be used again. The user can program it with the cleaning scheduler program to make certain the XV-11 cleans once a day, if he or she likes.

They had the XV-11 on display at Pepcom, a huge press event that takes place before the main conference at CES. It seemed to make a piece of carpet look like new, and it left some interesting swirling pattern.

The Neato Robotics XV-11 should be available for purchase around February 4 for a price of $399.

Yahoo Connected TV program keeps the Internet on your TV, via widgets

Posted: 07 Jan 2010 07:19 AM PST

tv_widgets_yahoo_1Some of you are probably aware that many TV companies are helping users stay connected to the internet with the use of Widgets. One of them is everyone’s favorite number two search engine, Yahoo.

Yahoo is teaming with big television company partners like Samsung, LG, Vizio and more to create Yahoo TV Widgets. This widget-based user experience for the TV uses popular Yahoo programs such as Yahoo! Finance, Yahoo! Weather, Yahoo! Video and Flickr. It also uses content from other providers such as Amazon, Blockbuster, eBay, CBS, Showtime, USA Today, Twitter, Facebook, and much more.

Even though the Yahoo Widget Engine was announced in August 2009, I finally got a chance to see it at Pepcom last night. As you can see, it is a chance for the user to watch TV with a little widgets down below. Selecting them will grant the user access to all sorts of online content.

Yahoo teamed up with Intel to create a Widget Development Kit so that any company, including developers, CE manufacturers, advertisers, and content producers, can easily construct their own TV widgets based on whatever they need.

Yahoo’s Internet widget program is clearly the start of a new era where consumers watch live television and check Internet updates as well. Not that we don’t do that with a laptop and a TV, but why multitask with two devices when only one is needed?

Wireless PC Remote with built-in motion sensor

Posted: 06 Jan 2010 12:00 PM PST

motionPCRemote

The Wii very quickly became the gaming console of choice for a great deal of people that would never consider themselves to be gamers.  Along with the console came a whole lot of almost pointless accessories for people to buy.  Sure, there were on occasion a few useful items, but a lot of them were just to make a quick buck off of not so well informed newcomers to gaming.  This leans a little towards the pointless gadgets, but it could actually be justified.  Especially if you’ve started to enjoy the feel of the Wiimote.

It’s just an electronic device to work with your PC, bringing the Wii feel to your computer.  It’s pitched towards those that do PowerPoint presentations on a regular basis.  It works just like a normal mouse, but it also has some additional button controls, as well as motion activated page switching.  Although it is definitely a novelty device, it would be comfortable to use for presentations.  To pick one up you can find these on Chinavasion for $40.72.
