Smart Textiles – Get a Charge out of your T-Shirt Posted: 16 Jul 2012 02:00 PM PDT I can still fondly remember my Sony Walkman, and I was one of the first kids on the block to have one of those suitcase phones. I also remember the astronomical bill for a lousy half hour of talk time, which was all that thing could handle. No doubt batteries have gotten much more efficient, and a heck of a lot smaller… but, can we do better? Well, what about charging your devices with your clothes? Have you heard of Smart textiles? Changing ordinary fabrics like cotton or polyester into a sort of rechargeable battery, you may someday be able to charge your cellphone, right in the pocket of your shirt. Awesome. Scientists everywhere are working on various types of Electronic Textiles, and at the University of South Carolina they have come up with a cheap and relatively easy way to change a cotton shirt into a repository for electricity by simply soaking it in Fluoride and baking it at high temperatures. The material maintains its flexibility after the treatment, and can be folded with no problems. By using small sections of this treated fabric as an electrode, scientists were able to show how the flexible material acts as a capacitor. (Capacitors have the ability to store electrical charge.) Of course researchers are working on stacking these capacitors or even coating the already treated material with nanostructured ( a size between molecular and microscopic) manganese oxide in order to dramatically increase the fabrics energy storage capabilities. The impact this technology could have on the future of our gadgets is very far-reaching. We can imagine a world with roll-up computers and t-shirts that can monitor heart rate while you run, or even cell phones that could be folded and stuffed in your pocket. Yup, the future is coming… What do you think we’ll see when we get there? Source: theblaze.com [ Smart Textiles – Get a Charge out of your T-Shirt copyright by Coolest Gadgets ] |
Flip Flask Sandals – Just don’t get Flip Floppin Drunk! Posted: 16 Jul 2012 07:10 AM PDT
We went to a concert in the park, and although nothing says summer like some cool tunes in the outdoors, a small cocktail usually figures into the occasion somewhere. But at this park, booze was simply not allowed. I looked at the mostly over 50 crowd, lounging on their towels and listening to Doo-Wop music and wondered what the heck? I strongly suspect the folks in front of us were passing a bottle of wine off as some grape juice, but why should I complain. Next week though, I’m bringing my own stash… Check out Flip Flask Sandals, attractive summer footwear that hides a tempting secret, hidden in the bottom of each shoe is a 3 ounce flask. So although you may not be able to drink yourself into a drool-worthy stupor, you can certainly relax a little at your next sporting event, concert, or late night study session at the campus library. I’ve never seen a product that seems to upset so many people. Since the beginning of time, folks have devised ways to sneak alcohol into almost every venue, it began with injected watermelons and spiked Jello and evolved into fake cameras, cell phones and boda bags that strap onto your body, yet these tiny little flasks contained within the heel of a shoe that strike me as more of a novelty than anything else, are considered a huge problem. Entire web pages have been devoted to a competitors removal from store shelves, and they have struck fear into the hearts of educators and law enforcement officials alike. Interesting. All that being said, if you’re still anxious to have a pair of Flip Flasks in your closet, they can still be found in a few places, one being at Flipflask.com for about 30 bucks. These foot friendly flip flops come in unisex sizes and several different designs. Personally I find that they may be the most useful in order to smuggle my liquid make-up on my next international flight… Okay, I take that back.

Necomimi finally arrives in the US Posted: 16 Jul 2012 06:30 AM PDT Have you heard of the company NeuroSky before? Well, this is the company behind some mind controlled devices in recent memory, and even more recently, Necomimi is one of NeuroSky's latest products which was introduced in Japan. Basically, this will target cosplayers who want to wear one pair of those cute looking kitten ears, but what makes the Necomimi special is this – it is a mind controlled toy that ought to be a hit among those who love all things about cosplaying. First launched on an official basis at Comic-Con in San Diego, the Necomimi is actually a headband which will feature brainwave cat ears that will move according to the user’s moods. It will rely on NeuroSky’s ThinkGear technology, enabling Necomimi to provide folks a chance to express their moods in real time, and through fake cat ears to boot. Well, it would have been nice to see a mentally controlled tail appendage to go along with the pair of ears, but I guess that particular idea will just have to be reserved for sometime down the road. The Necomimi thought controlled cat ears is not too expensive either to own, considering they retail for just $99.95 a pair via select authorized resellers, retail partners and on www.necomimi.com. First becoming popular within the anime and costume circles in Japan due to a viral Youtube video by Neurowear, audiences have for the longest time being waiting for the US launch. The unveiling of the Necomimi cat ears took place at Comic-Con booth #305, and fans who have been following the Necomimi product will be able to be one of the first in line to demonstrate and purchase the product. There are three emotional states that the Necomimi cat ears are able to create, resulting in cat-like reactive movements which will depict whether you are relaxed or interested at a particular point during the conversation. Should something interesting catch your attention during the conversation, the ears will shoot straight up. When you are relaxed, the ears will droop, and when both are highly focused and highly relaxed, or “in the zone”, the ears will start to wiggle back and forth. Posted: 16 Jul 2012 05:30 AM PDT Renewable energy is the way to go these days, as we see the rise of hybrid vehicles that grace the roads around the world. Of course, you can always take the greener route that touts solar energy as the panacea of all the world's energy ills, and here is a solution that you can always place at home in the form of the $2,000 Solar Power Generator. This generator will be powered by the sun, where it is said to provide emergency electricity for just about any home appliance. It will be very different from other noisy gas or propane generators which deliver noxious fumes, as this particularly advanced model is decent enough to see action in a library, while delivering zero-emission back up power without having to rely on volatile fuels. Should it be fully charged, the 1250-watt battery can power a refrigerator for up to four days, a TV for 35 hours, or a laptop for up to 30 hours – something tells me that during a power brownout or blackout, you might want to skip the TV and keep your food fresh instead. There is an integrated LCD panel that displays the wattage coming into and going out of the generator, while showing the remaining amount of juice left in the generator’s battery. There are eight solar panels which are hooked up to the generator simultaneously in order to accelerate recharging or provide an endless source of juice to a refrigerator or any appliance. Posted: 16 Jul 2012 05:00 AM PDT Do you love opening up a bottle of wine from time to time to go along with your meals? If you have answered in the affirmative, then you might be interested in picking up the $59.95 Best Electric Wine Opener, where it actually picked up a “The Best” rating from the Hammacher Schlemmer Institute. The reason behind that? Well, this is because it offers a perfect worm insertion and delivers a rapid, effortless cork removal. In fact, a wine industry expert actually managed to open 56 bottles using The Best Electric Wine Opener, touting that it requires virtually “no effort at all.” This is different from lesser models which were touted to be “incredibly awkward” or “required a lot of pressure.” According to the very same expert, The Best model’s screw insertion is said to be “flawless” on traditional as well as synthetic corks, while delivering exemplary cork removal performance as other openers do experience being stuck to the lip of the bottle. A 10-hour charge is able to open up 50 wine bottles, and each purchase comes with a foil cutter. [ The Best Electric Wine Opener copyright by Coolest Gadgets ] |
