Igloo Village in Finland lets you see the northern lights, in luxury

Posted: 20 Sep 2011 11:36 AM PDT

This is Igloo Village in Finland, and if you want to see the northern lights without saying “B-r-r-r”, this is the place.

Apparently, many people came from far and wide to see the dazzling natural beauty of the northern lights, but they were getting cold feet on their trip. The creator of this Igloo Village wanted to make something to help them out, and built a fleet of glass-topped igloos.

Each igloo is made of thermal glass and so the view stays clear of frost even when the outside temperature drops to -30 Celsius (man that is cold). These igloos also have a toilet and comfy beds. You can watch a video of it after the jump that will give you more information.

All I can say is that I find this to be quite a romantic getaway. If I can look up from my bed and see a breathtaking view of the heavens, while staying warm, then I think I have found my next getaway with my wife.

It looks like some of the cheaper rooms are more like igloos, but the restaurant will give them some warmth.

I don’t have a price for a night’s stay for the warm or cold rooms, and you’ll have to go online to find out the cost of a round-trip ticket to Finland.

V-MODA Vibrato Remote headphones

Posted: 20 Sep 2011 10:50 AM PDT

We have reported on V-Moda before, especially with their True Blood style MAKER and REVAMP headphones. I got very curious about these headphones, and I was pleased that V-MODA sent me the Vibrato Remote.

It is called Remote because it has a three-button remote and discrete high-fidelity microphone to give users control of music and and calls. The three buttons are the volume, play/pause, and it can even do voice memos on iPhones 3GS or newer.

The Vibratto remote is made to be durable as the wires feel more like thin ropes rather than rubber insulated wires. The Vibrato is sculpted from a zinc alloy and has next generation hybrid silicone ear-tips.

So, how is the sound? I compared it to my normal, much cheaper earbuds, and there is a definite difference, especially at higher level volumes. The official site claims that you “don’t just hear the music, feel it”. Right now, I’m connected to some tunes and the 8mm dynamic HD neodymium driver is delivering its promised “vibrant bass, vivid mid-range, and vivacious highs”.

All in all, I would say that the V-MODA Vibrato Remote are durable headphones with some quality sound. This excellence does cost, and the price is high at $129.99.

Logitech Wireless Touchpad is very hands-on

Posted: 20 Sep 2011 10:10 AM PDT

About a week ago, we reported on the announcement of Logitech’s Wireless Touchpad, and I just got to try it out for myself.

The Touchpad is like the touchpad on your laptop, but a lot bigger at 5-inches (my laptop is about 3 inches). It comes with a a dongle that allows the user to work wirelessly with your computer.

The setup is quite simple, and then its all about learning what you can do with your fingers. The one finger will let you do all the things a mouse can do like move the cursor, double click, and drag and drop. It gets more interesting when you go with more than one finger.

For example, two finger swipes are for both vertical and horizontal scrolling. A three finger swipe is for page navigation: a three finger swipe up or down is Page Up or Page Down, and the three-finger swipe left or right will go forward or back one page.

Then there is the four fingered swipe, which is good for displaying a window of open applications. It can also do a minimize and restore windows, as well as a Windows 7 snap.

You should be able to get the Logitech Wireless TouchPad for about $49.99. I wouldn’t be surprised if we see a lot more touchpads like this from other companies, and I wouldn’t be surprised if they are larger. I think all of us are getting used to the touch interface of our mobile phones and tablets, and soon all laptop screens will be like them. Until then, we have devices like this.

Augmented reality brings Japanese popstar Hatsune Miku to life

Posted: 20 Sep 2011 06:30 AM PDT

If you happen to rock to iOS and Android-powered smartphones and happen to live in Japan, then you might be interested to hear that Japanese popstar Hatsune Miku might be making her way into your Toyota Corolla (2011 model) as a passenger. Of course, she will not be there as a passenger, but rather, she will perform “live” on a stage in 3D thanks to an Augmented Reality (AR) experience. This experience is unique only to those who own a Toyota – so Honda owners will miss out on this. The free Toyota Shopping Tool App that can be downloaded over at the iTunes App Store and the Android Market will give your next driving session a boost.

Just who is Hatsune Miku? Well, she is a fully synthesized vocal and visual character that was created by Crypton Future Media, Inc. four years ago, and her voice has already been featured in over 100,000 user-generated songs and videos. Toyota decided on Hatsune Miku as their official representative where the 2011 Corolla is concerned because the two of them are capable of realizing big dreams in compact packages.

To date, the Toyota Corolla has been the Japanese firm’s best selling compact car, and with an updated exterior and interior design, not to mention the inclusion of additional technology, it will be able to stand out from the compact vehicle category, similar to how Hatsune Miku has managed to make a splash in her very own field.

Smartphone owners are able to download the app, whereby they will need to follow the instructions on “ToyoTag”, which is a special 2D barcode solution that was specially created for this experience. The ToyoTag functions as a virtual “stage” where the 3D Hatsune Miku performs “live” alongside the 2011 Toyota Corolla – which needless to say, is her new favorite vehicle now. Your very own pop princess in the car? Sounds like a fun ride!

Vuzix Wrap 1200VR video eyewear unveiled

Posted: 20 Sep 2011 06:00 AM PDT

Vuzix is well known for their range of video eyewear, and they are certainly keeping up with the times with their latest release, the Vuzix Wrap 1200VR video eyewear. Why the VR suffix in the model number? Well, VR means Virtual Reality, and it should usher in a new era of video eyewear. The Wrap 1200VR is said to be able to support widescreen VGA video up to 720P, not to mention the latest 3D games as well as upgraded head-tracking to make sure it remains ahead of the pack (while you edge past the Joneses with your latest gizmo).

Do not expect to look nerdy with this sunglass-style Wrap 1200VR, as careful thought had been incorporated into the overall design. Capable of bringing virtual worlds to life with its 16:9 widescreen, you can also more or less “step inside” your thanks to the virtual display and superior head tracking capability. The supersized display itself will feature a 35 degree field of view, which is similar to watching 3D content on a 75″ display from as near as 10 feet away.

Just what makes up the Wrap 1200VR's head tracking technology? Well, it is known as the Wrap Tracker 6TC that sports a compass, alongside the aid of 9 sensors that work together to create a 3 degree of freedom solution with automatic drift compensation for smooth, realistic motion tracking. Don’t worry about new versions of 3D videos – this model supports the latest side-by-side 3D video format, not to mention playing nice with over 100 titles for 3D video and/or head tracking. Love video gaming staples like Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, Fallout 3, and F.E.A.R.? Fret not, those are all covered.

The Wrap 1200VR will be able to hook up to more or less any Windows graphic card desktop or laptop computer, never mind the make or model. Windows 7, Vista and XP (32 and 64-bit versions) will also be supported, making the Wrap 1200VR more or less the perfect big screen interactive gaming monitor. Throwing in optional interfaces, the Wrap 1200VR can connect to component video devices such as the Xbox 360 and PS3.

All that technology is not going to come cheap though – we’re looking at a price point of $599.99, but good thing it is large enough to fit over most prescription eyewear – unless you use a frame that is extremely artsy and way out large.

Mini Mez-Itz Batmobile with Batman

Posted: 20 Sep 2011 05:30 AM PDT

Ever read a Batman comic and wondered just what you would have done differently if you were the caped crusader? Sure, you have the benefit of hindsight since you know how the story pans out, but pretend for a while that you are in Bruce Wayne’s shoes – would you do what he has done? If you feel that you would have taken a different route, then might I interest you in the $19.99 Mini Mez-Itz Batmobile with Batman that allows you to relive those crucial moments in the comics, but with your own style?

The Mini Mez-Itz Batmobile with Batman set is miniature goodness at its very best – Batman here measures a mere 2″ in height, but you can definitely let your imagination run wild. Boasting a real cloth cape, the mini Batmobile comes with a removable hard top, letting Batman (and his sidekick of choice) jump out and save the day.

Even the dash is highly detailed, sporting a wide range of buttons and switches, and obviously for privacy’s sake, the windows will be tinted (partly because they are made out of solid plastic). This is the perfect desk set for Batman fans to have their imagination run wild. Just be more liberal with your thoughts, since the Batmobile has wheels that will not roll.

Portable Body Scales

Posted: 20 Sep 2011 05:00 AM PDT

There is nothing quite like having your very own stuff around even when you travel – such as your own iron, kettle, and what’s this? A portable body scale? Yes, not all hotel rooms will come equipped with a scale so that you can keep track of your weight, so why not follow the scouts and be prepared by carrying around your very own £24.99 Portable Body Scale? After all, it isn’t to say that this particular device is heavy, measuring a mere 21cm in length.

Made out of toughened glass (hmmm, is it Gorilla Glass here?), these scales are able to actually support a weight of up to 330lb (150kg). There are no switches for you to fiddle around with – all you need to do is just step on it, and they will turn on automatically, flashing up your weight on the central red LED display. Now you can even stash a scale down your handbag, now how about that? What are some of the other stuff that you would like to see fit into a handbag in the future?

To make sure it keeps folks who can’t figure out how many pounds equal to a kilogram, fret not – this puppy will be able to switch between the two for easy interpretation.
