Luna Robot from RoboDynamics

Posted: 11 May 2011 02:35 PM PDT

I believe it was the preview of the movie Bicentennial Man that promised that every home would have a robot by the year 2005. Well, we aren’t there yet, but RoboDynamics is promising a robot in every house by 2021.

The Luna robot is supposed to be a robot mobile platform. I believe that means we are looking at an “App Store”, but instead of a special program for an iDevice, this would be a program for a robot. I’m sort of looking forward to the days where you can download an app for walking the dog.

You can watch the video after the jump to see more of it, but you don’t really see much except a robot modeling to the main theme song from Chariots of Fire. However, you do get a close look up its ports, located conveniently in the backside.

In addition to this App store and ports, the Luna Robot should come with “personality packs” and an 8-inch touchscreen, two cameras, wireless connectivity, three-mic array, as well as a variety of sensors.

The Luma should be coming soon in standard, and then there is editions limited to about 1,000 pieces. The price should be “affordable”, so I guess we really are looking at that future of robot servants after all.

UNO 3 changes from scooter to motorcycle

Posted: 11 May 2011 02:05 PM PDT

My Source states that the UNO 3 is the “world’s first real transformer”, and while it might not turn into a robot, it is a scooter that can shift into a motorcycle.

You should probably just take a look at the video after the jump to see more. I like the shot of the guy going into the elevator as a scooter, and then coming out and seeing it become a motorcycle.

He is able to do this without ever having to get off the UNO 3. It looks like a very smooth transition, and I don’t know if the driver had to learn some new skill to do this. Still, it is truly more than meets the eye.

The video also has an interesting story behind it with the inventor. It looks like he was on one of those Shark Tank or American Inventor shows and got himself some funding.

The one thing that I like about it is how it works as a scooter which allows for some interesting movement around, and then it has the speed of a motorcycle. I wish I had some stats of the speed and fuel efficiency. I do have a price, which is at a high $5000-$7500.

Swann Emergency Strike Gyro Balanced R/C Helicopter

Posted: 11 May 2011 11:55 AM PDT

I have had a chance to try out remote control toy helicopters before, and the last one was from the Interactive Toy Company, and it was made out of styrofoam.

This particular one is from Swann, who is quite famous for making high quality security cameras. The Emergency Strike is modeled after real search and rescue operation helicopters, and it is pretty cool.

I got a chance to try it out for myself, and I found that getting up in the air was easy. As usual, it is all about learning to navigate the thing with practice. By the way, it ran into a few things, and it was pretty durable. I also liked the blue and red flashing lights.

The copter is powered by a rechargeable Lithium battery, and the user can plug in the charging lead into the infrared controller for 50-60 minutes for 8 minutes of flying time. It is an indoor toy, as the wind could take this for a ride. According to the Swann site, the user can fly two or three at once with tri-band remote selection. So if you have a dream of flying multiple R/C copters, this is your toy!

You should be able to get the Emergency Strike Gyro Balanced Remote Control Helicopter for about $69.99 but not at the Swann Security site. You can find out more information about it there, though.

Snack Packaging Goes High Tech – Can You Hear It?

Posted: 11 May 2011 10:44 AM PDT

Does anyone remember Pringles? That nifty little can of neatly stacked potato-like chips, they didn't taste like regular chips, but if you were in the mood for Pringles, nothing else would do. I haven't had a Pringle for at least 10 years. I don't really know why, it was nice to not have that pile of crumbs at the bottom of a greasy bag. Pringles just needed a little more jazz… They've been around too long, a little stale so to speak, they needed to do something fun.

Well, Pringles, is giving customers a brand new reason to love its potato crisps. With product purchase, they're giving away a Pringles brand speaker that is designed to fit onto the top of any can of Pringles, the speaker uses the empty can to amplify the sound when attached to an MP3 player or similar personal music device. With the speaker attached to a can of Pringles, after listeners munch their chips, they can get their groove on.

It’s not so much WHAT it is, as the IDEA behind it that makes me wonder, what’s next? Is this the beginning of a new trend? Sure, it starts out with a simple can of Pringles, but who knows what this could lead to? I might just go ahead and get my Pringles speaker, then again I may just hold out for a new pretzel rod container flat screen. Now that would be really cool!

Kneader hits all the right spots

Posted: 11 May 2011 08:06 AM PDT

Those who work long hours at the office will know that there is nothing quite like a nice, relaxing massage after a particularly difficult day at the cubicle. Of course, reaching home and asking your equally tired spouse to give you a nice back rub might not be so wise an idea, but what if he/she has the proper tool that requires less expenditure of strength? That is where the Kneader comes in – this £24.99 purchase will offer a nice therapeutic massage, which will of course be augmented greatly if one has a good understanding on how muscles work.

carrying this around might make it seem as though you were toting around a knuckle duster of sorts, but when used properly, each curve will have its purpose fulfilled since it was designed for different purposes – for example, the upper arch is mainly for stroking movements, while the upper side portions are for deeper movements.

You don’t even need to dress down to make good use of the Kneader, and if you’re adventurous enough to give it a DIY treatment on yourself, why not?

Hand Pedal Float

Posted: 11 May 2011 08:00 AM PDT

You know that you would love nothing better than to hang around on a float during the summer in your pool, relaxing with a good book in one hand and a pina colada in another (while slapping yourself liberally with plenty of sunscreen)? Well, there is one minor gripe about such a float – you will need to launch yourself to the middle of nowhere, and getting back to “shore” might be more of a hassle than you originally thought. What better way to reach the side than through the use of a pedal?

This is where the Hand Pedal Float‘s genius comes in – the raft lounger is propelled by hand-powered propellers, where a couple of those four-blade propellers (one on each side of the seat) will rotate with a simple turn, hence moving the float forward, backward, or even turning it in either direction at your whim and fancy – all without getting your hand wet. There is an angled backrest that allows one to enjoy reclined relaxation while drifting aimlessly, and with 25 square feet of space, it offers ample room for outstretched limbs.

A couple of integrated cup holders will help keep your drinks upright, and with the float being made up of heavy-gauge vinyl which resists punctures and fading. The Hand Pedal Float will be a nice $79.95 addition to your home, that’s for sure.

Waboba Street Ball

Posted: 11 May 2011 07:51 AM PDT

The weather is getting better and better for some outdoor fun with your kids, so you might want to take into consideration purchases that are geared towards the outdoors instead of letting little Johnny get cooped up all day long in front of the video game console. Enter the Waboba Street Ball, where this £5.99 purchase looks very simple in its bright colors, but since it is covered in symmetrical ridges and troughs, there is virtually no way to predict where it will bounce upon contact with the floor.

Seems like the tool to have plenty of laughs when you’re out in the garden, tossing and throwing this around without a care in the world! It might end up being the most random and exhausting game of throw and catch that you'll ever play, so you have been forewarned!

Antec soundscience halo 6 LED bias lighting kit

Posted: 11 May 2011 07:37 AM PDT

Antec celebrates its quarter century of existence by introducing the soundscience halo 6 LED bias lighting kit, targeting the enthusiast DIY market for gaming nuts as well as PC upgrade fans. The name of this DIY kit is pretty much self-explanatory, but just in case you do not get what it is all about, we are here to help. The Antec soundscience halo 6 LED bias lighting kit will come across as an affordable option for folks who want to outfit PC monitors with professional-grade backlighting.

Just what is the whole point of such backlights? Well, the main idea would be to reduce eye fatigue while increasing image clarity whenever you indulge in long gaming sessions and similar periods of extended computer use. This is not a new idea at all, as it has been demonstrated by Philips and their Ambilight equipped TVs in the past, but for computer users, it is unchartered territory.

The bias lighting illumination technique will make a ring of white backlight appear behind PC monitors, hence reducing eyestrain that is caused by differences in picture brightness from scene changes in movies, TV shows and video games. Apart from that, the soundscience halo 6 LED bias lighting kit's USB-powered LED strip that measures 14.6" in length can be attached to the back of the monitor, ensuring it complements any PC monitor as long as it does not venture beyond the 24" screen size.

Both the color and brightness of the LEDs are carefully calibrated, where it will go great lengths to help increase a monitor's perceived contrast ratio, hence enhancing perceived black levels, vibrant colors and picture detail by enabling dark adapted viewing.

Antec will offer a 2-year limited warranty for their Antec soundscience halo 6 LED bias lighting kit, and at the relatively low, low price of $12.95 a pop, it might just turn more than a few heads when you have this installed on your home machine. Perhaps it is a good way of dropping a hint to your boss that you are being overworked, and your eyes doth protest looking into the computer screen for too long?

Going green sees new projects materializing

Posted: 11 May 2011 07:28 AM PDT

It goes without saying that in this day and age, going green is more or less mandatory if you or your company wants to win brownie points with people around. Sure, we have solar powered cell phones and electric cars as well as the slew of recycling programs that you participate in on an almost religious basis, but what about the home that you live in?

You might have populated it with plenty of energy saving devices, but there is still much that can be done. In this aspect, there are several projects that we would like to draw your attention to concerning a green home, and they are the 365 livingARK, the LandARK concept and the epic 365 ark projects. To know more about them, head on after the jump.

First off, we have the 365 livingARK project that you see above being part of a year long project that will explore the dwelling from a video, audio and textual medium every single day, while picking up more knowledge and information concerning energy consumption and production. The ark will be located in the national forest itself, and it won’t be alone since the team behind it intends to place it with a village for simultaneous digital learning – while the forest surroundings make it the perfect excuse for one to brush up on bushcraft skills and growing your own produce.

As for the LandARK concept that you see below, it was meant to be a semi-permanent structure and hence, there is the rather complex bit of planning for a permanent building which has been reduced, allowing it to be sited at areas of outstanding natural beauty. Taking on the 'tread lightly' principle would be key to the design, translating to major groundworks and grid services being ruled out of the picture during the design process. It will function well as either a home or an office, capable of housing up to 8 people as a shorter stay cabin, remaining cosy in winter and cool in the summer.

As for the epic 365 ark project, it is a year long social media project that requires £16,000 more in order to make it a reality, but frankly, very little else information is known about it.

Out of the three, which would best describe your kind of green home? Also, don’t you think they all look the same?

Charge your Cell Phone – With Sound

Posted: 10 May 2011 08:25 PM PDT

It happened again, I was 50 miles from home with a million things that needed to be done, when I got a flat tire, and my cell phone was dead. I didn't have a charger, I was in the middle of nowhere, and I had to get to a dentist appointment AND I pick my daughter up at school. Why is it the phone never goes dead while I'm texting nonsense to my best friend in Minnesota?

Someday, days like today could be a distant memory, as electrical engineers in South Korea are currently working on a system that can convert everyday sound into energy, so imagine if you will, a world where cell phones can recharge themselves as people speak into them. The technology would also be able to harness background noise and music, to charge phones while they’re not being used.

The actual process being used in order to convert sound into energy seems simple enough. According to a recent article in the Telegraph, ”The technology uses tiny strands of zinc oxide sandwiched between two electrodes. A sound absorbing pad on top vibrates when sound waves hit it, causing the tiny zinc oxide wires to compress and release. This movement generates an electrical current that can then be used to charge a battery.”

A prototype of this technology was able to convert sound of around 100 decibels – which is the equivalent of noisy traffic – to generate 50 millivolts of electricity. “This is not enough to charge a phone properly, but Dr Kim and his colleagues hope that by altering the material the wires are made from, they will be able to produce more energy at lower sounds levels.

Now if the music on my iPod could just run the vacuum cleaner and the vacuum noise could keep the iPod charged… that would be living!
