The Sphero remote control ball on Bluetooth

Posted: 10 Dec 2010 04:51 PM PST

We can do a lot with our mobile phones, and apparently rolling a ball via Bluetooth is now one of them.

I guess that there is something interesting about a robotic ball, and it is a lot less flamboyant than the Prime8.

This is the Sphero, and I have a a video of this after the jump if you want to see how it rolls. Yes, that is a bad joke.

If you are one of those people that is sitting around and wondering what you can do with a remote controlled ball. My question is: what can’t you do with a remote-controlled ball? Just think of all the fun you can have putting two balls on a table, and then letting one try to push off the other.

From the video, it looks like the Sphero depends on tilt controls. I would imagine that millions of Super Monkey Ball users are seeing a practical use for their refined skills.

The company that has created the Sphero is Orbotix, and they intend to be showing off their remote control ball at CES 2011. Hopefully, I’ll get some shots of it there, and maybe even a video. I wonder if the Sphero is as transparent as it looks.

Play Off Ice Hockey

Posted: 10 Dec 2010 04:34 PM PST

There is nothing quite like a brutish game of ice hockey to get the adrenaline pumping, what with huge men crashing each other against the wall just to get a tiny puck into the opponent’s goal. Well, you can now bring that experience home (albeit sans the atmosphere) without getting hurt one bit in the form of the Play Off Ice Hockey. At £59.99 a pop, it will take a certain amount of finesse to make sure your players do the things you want them to, where each team comes with six movable players. The players themselves can move up and down their designated grooves, turning full circle on the spot if you so desire. Perfect to spend those chilly evenings indoors with your family and friends over a simulated game of ice hockey, eh?

Smart Astro Color Changing Lava Lamp

Lava lamps are real classics when it comes to home decor – they hardly get out of date, and are always mesmerizing to boot. Well, it won’t hurt that the Lava Lamp is given an update in the 21st century, eh? This £84.99 Smart Astro Colour Changing Lava Lamp adds a modern update with touch sensitivity at the base in the form of a button, where you can change colors with but a single touch. You are able to choose from Green to Yellow and Blue to Red, where each one will go through several shades en route to its destination color. Heck, if you like a particular color which is in transition, just touch the button on the base and you’re good to go. iPad Lock is a long time in waiting

Posted: 10 Dec 2010 04:27 PM PST

It is interesting to note that while there are so many notebooks and netbooks out there in the market, how many of said owners actually purchase a special kind of lock to make sure that nothing untoward happens to their precious devices whenever they are not around? I mean, take a look around you at Starbucks and all of those other coffee places, how many people actually leave their notebooks to chance whenever they go to the loo? Perhaps it is partly due to ego, where they don’t want to be seen as paranoid by the rest of the people there, but in either case, we’re sure the iPad isn’t going to be treated with such non-chalance, never mind that it is cheaper than some notebooks and hold a whole lot less sensitive data.

Enter the iPad Lock, where it is the first of its kind in the world. After all, you have already spent a small fortune on the latest Apple gizmo, so why not fork out a little bit more to make sure that all of it remains safe and sound whenever you aren’t around to take care of it in a public place? Heck, you will most probably use it more often than a regular netbook considering its portability, so getting the iPad Lock does make plenty of sense.

It will not slow down your mobility one bit, since you are able to lock and unlock it in seconds, where you can take it with you wherever you go. Of course, there is also another solution, which would be to mount your iPad to a stationary bracket, but then again that defeats the purpose of having an iPad in the first place.

It is also touted to be the best security solution for retailers, after all, stickers do leave residue while security cameras, theft detectors and security guards only come into action after events happen. Why not get the iPad Lock that virtually pays for itself many times over? Depending on the type of model you choose, the iPad Lock will retail anywhere from $39.95 to $79.95.

11-year old comes up with own iPad stand

Posted: 10 Dec 2010 04:23 PM PST

There is just something precocious about 11-year olds and their imagination – at least we know one of them in the good ol’ USA is patriotic enough to observe that while many devices and other stuff are designed here, they are actually manufactured elsewhere. Of course, the economics of the situation might be a bit too heavy for him to understand at the moment, but at the very least, he is able to think out of the box by coming up with something that is made back in the US without losing any bit of functionality.

We’re talking about 11-year-old Dino Zaharakis, who intends to develop a stand that could place/remove a device without disconnecting its cable, hold a device with/without a skin in both portrait and landscape modes, have viewing angles that were optimized for video conferencing and manufactured back home, all the while being able to play nice with iPad, Kindle, nook, tablets, iPhone and other smartphones.

Dino actually came up with this iPad dock after seeing his dad use an impromptu one while discussing the family’s summer camp plans, where Dino quickly pointed out a bunch of design flaws while suggesting that he could do better. Naturally, his dad decided to challenge him, offering him a new phone if Dino could come up with an iPad dock and a web site. This catalyst caused Dino’s mind to move into high gear, where he manipulated pieces of aluminum stock from McMaster-Carr, using a Home Depot miter saw and a vise. He made several prototypes. There were three favorites in total, dubbed Curly 3 Stooges, Alpha Slick and Big Z.

The final prototype was created after merging the best features and capabilities of each prototype. This led Dino’s dad to bring him to Northampton Community College’s Fab Lab where they created 3D solid models using Solidworks and later created prototypes using a Dimension 3D printer. The dzdock One can be yours for $29.99, where it will come in black, white, silver, red, pink, lime and blue shades. With the promotional code of DZPRNEWS at www.buy.dzdock.com, you can bring this puppy home for $10 less – and this offer is good until Christmas, so what are you waiting for?

This Sarcoman robot can juggle

Posted: 10 Dec 2010 03:59 PM PST

We have seen some interesting robots in our time, and this Sacroman has the ability to do something that I can’t: juggle.

I’m pretty certain that Asimo isn’t capable of doing that. Sure, it may be able to walk up a flight of stairs, but as far as I’m concerned, if a robot can’t do circus stunts, then it isn’t a robot.

Apparently, the robot has a vision system that can somehow make “dynamic adjustments to its movements based on the paths of the balls”. I’ve got a video of it after the jump so you can see it for yourself.

Believe it or not, this video is over four years old. I wouldn’t be surprised if it was older. In fact, I checked on Sarcos Robotics website, a “research and development leader in designing and building”, and the latest news is from the nineties, I’m serious.

Okay, I’m going to be that guy who suggests this. Imagine if you could make several robots that could juggle like this. My question would be if a juggling robot would be at all impressive?

After all, a human learns how to juggle, and it takes some discipline. In fact, it is more discipline than I have ever undertook. However, a robot that juggles is just doing what it is programmed to do. I’ll bet that makes you think twice about starting a robotic circus.

Radio Controlled Smart Bullets – Go ahead, make my day

Posted: 10 Dec 2010 11:49 AM PST

Remember the old Bugs Bunny cartoons? Where Elmer Fudd would shoot his double barrel shotgun and the buckshot would zip over and around things and then tap you on the shoulder and wave, right before they exploded. Funny right? Not, so much anymore.

The U.S. Army has unveiled an experimental weapon that is heading to Afghanistan as we speak. This $25,000 high tech rifle fires explosive grenades or specialty "bullets" that can blow up in front of, or behind the intended target.

It was meant to give soldiers the ability to fire on the enemy, even if they were taking cover around a corner or in a foxhole.

The XM25 Counter Defilade Target Engagement System, allows soldiers to program the ammunition to explode at precise distances by measuring how far it is to a target using the laser site and then dialing in where the ammunition should explode, such as at the corner of a building. The "bullet" has a magnet inside that generates AC current as it spins, and a microprocessor that measures the spin to determine how far it has travelled, and when it will need to.. well, let's just say….tap the enemy on the shoulder.

The weapon has an array of ammunition to choose from, including non lethal rounds meant to stun, rather than kill the enemy. Individual rounds start at about $24.

How do you guard against something like this? My suggestion? RUN

Por favor, lea este – so now what do you do?

Posted: 09 Dec 2010 09:05 PM PST

I am multi-lingual, I speak American, Australian, English and a fair share of Canadian. That being said, when I travel anywhere else in the world I find myself having a bit of a hard time communicating. Whats worse is trying to read signs, especially since they may have something particularly important to say.

Well, TGPhoto was launched recently, by LinguaSys, Inc. and it enables users to photograph foreign signs or simple text on their Android and Blackberry devices and get almost instant translation in return.

Once you have the TGPhoto application on your Android device, you fill the screen with as much of the foreign text as fits in your viewfinder, take the picture and view the translation. The display will show both the original text and the translation in separate boxes.

Users will need to set the languages for both the text to be photographed, and its desired translation.

TGPhoto translates over 50 languages on any Android device with a built-in camera, using Android 2.1 or above.  The Blackberry version requires Blackberry 5.0 or greater.  Available for download now, through the Android marketplace for only $12.99 and of course an iPhone version is coming soon.
