The Wearable Telecommunicator is like having a little friend on your shoulder

Imagine if Jiminy cricket in Pinocchio was a robot, and he would be on his shoulder like you see in this picture. Granted, Steven Spielberg sort of did that in A.I., but the Wearable Telecommunicator is a reality.

The Wearable Telecommunicator has been developing experimental technology for a robot that is operated by a remote user so he or she can see, hear, and even gesture through the shoulder-mounted robot.

There is a video after the jump, and you can see the user of the Wearable Telecommunicator with virtual reality goggles. You know, the type that we all thought would be wearing by now back in the early nineties.

So I guess this is some way for a person to be in two places at the same time. In other words, the human can talk to someone new at a party, and the robot can chime in any time.

You know what it reminds me of? The scene in The Empire Strikes Back where Luke Skywalker has Yoda on his back during training. As I recall, R2D2 was in that scene, so I suppose what we are seeing with the Wearable Telecommunicator is a cross between the bossy micromanagement of Yoda and the helpful metal companion of Artoo.

Of course, this technology is still under development, hopefully we will never see an age where everyone has one of these robot parrots on their shoulder.

Rubik’s Cube goes electronics with the Slide

The Rubik’s Cube is one of those fads that will never have the original glory of the early 80’s, but it will always have a place in our hearts.

The cube was something that never seemed to need any improvement, but leave it to technology to improve on something, whether it needs it or not.

I’m not trying to bash the Rubik’s Slide, but it is very interesting to see that this Cube has more than just one puzzle. In fact, it supposedly has 10,000 puzzles that involve light up patterns and sound that I sadly don’t have a video for. However, these puzzles have a “Lightning Round”, and the puzzles have easy, medium, and hard. The Slide has an adjustable volume control, even high score memory.

The Rubik’s Slide made its first debut at the Toy Fair, which is still going on. I can’t help but wonder what else is going on at the Toy Fair right now. I mean, if they are going to make the Rubik’s Cube all techno-electric, then who knows what other toys that are not electronic in any way will get a techno-upgrade? No wonder why Woody was so jealous of Buzz in Toy Story.

The Rubik’s Slide should be available in the fall for a price of only $17.99, for ages 8 and up.

Garmin-Asus M10 ready to rock and roll

Looks like the Garmin-Asus intends to cover wider ground with a couple of smartphone releases that span across two operating systems, the Android-powered nuvifone A50 as well as the Windows Mobile running M10. The latter is a full-touch, all-in-one smartphone which will run on the most updated version of Windows Mobile – we’re talking about Windows Mobile 6.5.3 here, making it the second officially released smartphone to do so after the Sony Ericsson Aspen. The M10 will be able to keep professionals connected at all times with their business and personal contacts via email, calendar and Instant Messaging, apart from relying on preloaded mobile navigation from Garmin to help you get around unfamiliar territory whenever you are out of town. As with the nuvifone A50, you too can find the M10 in action at the Garmin-Asus exhibit at MWC 2010.

Hardware wise, the Garmin-Asus M10 does not look likely to disappoint anyone who wants a powerful, portable device. After all, it does come with a 3.5″ WVGA display alongside a finger-friendly user interface, while the Billboard feature shows off the most important information for one to access it in a snap with but a simple glance. Apart from that, an intuitive 3D Task Manager also enables users to switch between running applications easily. Underneath the hood will also lie 512MB RAM and 512MB ROM, 4GB of internal flash memory as well as a full QWERTY soft keyboard to help you get those text messages as well as urgent emails out in a juffy. Equipped with a 1500 mAh battery that provides hours of uninterrupted use, the M10 also comes with HSDPA wireless connectivity and Wi-Fi (802.11 b/g) support. Needless to say, with this being a Windows Mobile product, the M10 is able to synchronize to Microsoft Exchange.

It will hit the market in Asia and Europe the same time as the nuvifone A50, which is sometime in the first half of the year. Too bad pricing details have yet to be revealed, so we’re left guessing.

Garmin-Asus nuvifone A50 announced

Garmin and Asus’ latest collaboration has resulted in the nüvifone A50, a touchscreen Android-powered smartphone which will retain the mainstay characteristics of Garmin’s vaunted GPS navigation system. Guess those who travel frequently when it comes to doing business might find the A50 useful, considering it will not only help you stay organized with everyone else in your schedule, you can also take some time off after a gruelling day of meetings by walking around town with this in hand to visit all those interesting locations and places mentioned. Expect to see more of the nüvifone A50 at MWC 2010 in Barcelona, Spain.

Thanks to Google’s Android operating system, you can be sure that the nüvifone A50 will feature full integration with the vast array of Google mobile services, including one-click access to Google Search by voice, Google Maps, Gmail, YouTube, calendar, contacts and the Android Market which currently bosats over 20,000 applications for you to download and install. One thing’s for sure – do install a form of Task Killer for the nüvifone A50, as having too many programs opened simultaneously could prove detrimental to the smartphone’s battery health, not to mention slowing it down after a while.

Other features of the nüvifone A50 include on-device sync with Microsoft Exchange server as well as wireless synchronization of contacts, calendar and enterprise email. Setting up your account is a snap, taking all of a few steps. Apart from that, you will be able to receive your current location (latitude and longitude) information from multiple sources including satellite, network-based and terrestrial sources. These various technologies will work in tandem so that A50 customers are able to enjoy the best location and navigation experience possible on a smartphone, although we’re sure that Apple begs to differ. Expect to pick up the Garmin-Asus nüvifone A50 in Europe sometime in the first half of this year for a yet undisclosed price.

Movie Polaroid Camera worth looking into

Those of you who love recording every single moment on video or snapping photos with a DSLR might want to check out designer Kim Hyun Joong’s latest concept – the Movie Polaroid Camera. This idea toys with Polaroid’s signature of instant gratification, albeit in a more modern manner. It supposedly prints movies on a flexible display, using Touch grapheme technology (Graphene is a flat sheet of carbon rings just one atom thick, which is being studied for a range of electronic applications). Who would have thought that movie printers were the way of the future? Needless to say, it will take many more years before it is actually ready to hit the market, considering such technology is too far off in the future to become mainstream anytime soon.

80’s Retro Mix Tape Case for the iPhone

Now that the mixed tape is all but extinct, it’s time to drag out the mixed tape themed accessories.  Sure, you probably don’t want to revert back to using old technology, but it’s always fun to have items that remind you of the good old days.  Back when you used to listen to the radio intently just waiting to pounce on that record button to get yourself that new song.  It’s funny how no one cared about illegal copies of music back in those days.  Probably due to the superior sound quality of a mixed tape.

Well now you can wrap your iPhone in vintage technology.  This mixed tape doesn’t say what gooey mix is on it, but the 80’s look is enough to keep anyone satisfied.  This will hold onto your iPhone and various other similarly sized electronics.  As of now this case is sold out within the Etsy seller’s shop.  Hopefully they’ll get a new supply soon.  It looks like if it were in stock it’d cost around $20.

Deafinite Style concept

The Deafinite Style concept has a two-fold function – this hearing aid also doubles up as a piece of jewelry, and I forsee that many people down the road in the future will definitely find something like this to be attractive. After all, young men these days don’t mind some minor body modifications which involve ear piercings, not to mention that they tend to crank up the volume on their iPods much louder than recommended, destroying their hearing along the way. Why not come up with a hearing aid that functions as a pretty nifty earring as well?

huBox functions as hub and storage

USB hubs are so incredibly common that they really have to have an angle to actually make it in this world.  Despite that this hub at first glance on someone’s desk would just look like a square with hubs around it, this one offers more than it would initially appears.  The white top of it actually opens up and makes for convenient storage of your smaller devices.

On the outside it offers a few spots to plug in your USB gadgets or various USB drives.  Then it also has an SD card reader.  When you’re not using your SD card or USB drives you could always just store them within the hub itself.  It measures 10 by 10 by 5cm.  It has a total of 3 USB ports and 1 memory card slot that has a maximum of 480 Mbps transfer speed.  It’s supposed to be appearing very soon on GeekStuff4U.  As of now it doesn’t appear that there’s a whole lot of information on the price.

Less Lamp Is Meant To Be Destroyed

Once you choose a lamp it’ll sit in your home for several years.  It’ll give you that extra bit of light that you crave in certain areas of your home to make some of your tasks easier, like reading and preparing meals.  Well this lamp will offer light just the same as any other lamp, but you get to choose just how much light you want and which direction you’d like to point it.

You see when you get this lamp it’ll be a perfect little egg shaped piece.  You’ll also receive a pretty mean looking pick.  Then you take the pick and punch either tiny holes in it or just knock off the entire bottom half.  Either way your lamp will be one of a kind.  Of course after you’ve destroyed your perfect egg you’ll still have the knowledge that you paid $875 to get a plaster lamp that you in turn destroyed with a pick axe.  You can find it through the MoMA Store.
