I had to put my camera in the shop again. Who would have thought I’d have so many problems with a high end Nikon? Stupid problems really… the latest was the USB connection that I use to download thousands of pictures on a weekly basis became loose and failed to maintain the connection with my computer. The guy at the shop said I should never use the USB and that I should get a card reader. Really? That’s disappointing.

In my search for a card reader, I found this neat little item, and while it’s not very new, I somehow had never heard of it. (Don’t ask me how that happened.) Check out a Sandisk SD card that is hinged, and folds down, revealing a USB adaptor, what a great idea! Now I can eliminate the USB cord all together and simply pop the card out of the camera and offload my pics right to my PC.

The Sandisk Ultra II is a relatively standard memory card that’s quite ample in its performance, featuring 15MB/sec Read/Write speeds and useful for almost any kind of photography. The Sandisk Ultra is also capable of some pretty solid transfer times between the card and your PC. The only downside I can find to this nifty little card is that 4 GB’s is the largest card they make, but with such easy data transfers, all without the pesky cords and wires, and with an under 25 dollar price tag for the 4 GB I guess I’ll just get a few of them. Personalized Cremation Urn – Comes out a Head

I spend a lot of time searching the Internet for new and different things to write about and for some reason I keep coming across different ways to memorialize our dearly departed. I’ve told you about drive thru funerals, and diamonds made from ashes, and talking headstones, so I figure what the heck… In keeping with tradition I might as well let you in on this too.

An Arlington Vermont company called Cremation Solutions is creating custom made cremation urns in the shape of your loved ones head. Thats right, with just one or two pictures of the persons face, and by using state of the art 3D imaging techniques, the company will make a polymer compound likeness of your loved one’s head and mount it on a marble base. Excellent.

I know you’re probably wondering, so yes, the heads will have hair, for folks that had very closely cropped hair, it can simply be digitally added to the head, or the company will gladly add a wig, per your specifications. Ashes are loaded from the bottom and a beautiful brass nameplate is affixed to the heads luxurious black marble base.

These, um, nifty little keepsakes come in 2 sizes, with the almost life-size head coming in at around 11 inches tall and is capable of holding the entire remains of your average sized dead person. The “keepsake” sized urn comes in at only 6 inches tall and will only be able to hold a small portion of the ashes, but promises years of enjoyment as a “treasured family heirloom.” I keep wondering why they didn’t go all out and make it talk… now there’s something for your mantle that could really give you the creeps! Tanita’s Sleep Meter is Internet connected

They say that getting enough hours of sleep is important, and not only that, picking up quality sleep is also another issue as quantity alone should not be used as a benchmark. If only there was a way for one to be able to measure the quality of sleep. Wait a minute, Tanita has a potential solution in the form of their Sleep Meter which is strategically located right under your bedclothes. Basically, the Sleep Meter is said to be effective even when you are sleeping on your side, as it is fully capable of measuring the sleep state of the user regardless of how he or she is sprawled all over the comfortable mattress..

The Tanita Sleep Meter will rely on a sensor that contains water to perform the necessary readings required, where its measurement data will then be made available over the Internet for remote monitoring capability. Also known as the “Sleep Scan (SL-511),” this device is hoped to see action for business use, particularly in nursing and caring businesses, hotels and express companies. Shipping of the Sleep Meter will kick off early August to volunteer testers, while those who want to pick one up for themselves will have to wait until early October.

The Sleep Meter will come with a mat-like sensor that is placed under bedclothes, and whenever you lie on the bedclothes, the sensor will get to work automatically, measuring your sleep state. Should you make some movement away from the bedclothes, it will stop whatever it is measuring at the moment, sending such measured data to a server over a wireless LAN connection.

After receiving the data, the server will start to use its built-in algorithms to analyze it. The user of the Sleep Meter (upon waking up, I suppose) or a manager is then able to perform a check on the analysis results that comprise of (but not limited to) sleep stage, sleep score, and sleep type through a simple act of accessing the server.

Basically, all vibrations sent to the water contained in the mat are picked up by a condenser microphone. These detected vibrations will be separated into a trio of components (pulse, breathing and body motion) that are based on the differences in frequency, intensity, etc. Using those vital data, analysis results are then calculated.
