Duck Billed Platypus USB Drive

Posted: 19 Feb 2010 03:26 PM PST

They duck billed platypus is such an under loved creature.  Thankfully one seller is finally having mercy on the animal.  Now you can show your platypus loving side with this handy USB drive.  Sure, some people might think it’s silly to carry around a platypus USB drive, but they clearly just don’t know what they’re missing.  This happy creature is perfectly content holding onto even the most dull documents that you need.

Of course it’s only half of a platypus instead of the whole thing.  Instead of having back legs he just has a USB port.  Which is tragic for him, but handy for you.  The drive holds 4GB of the necessary items you need to store within it.  The figurine was hand cut from hard vinyl and is covered in a clear coat of resin to give it some extra durability.  You can purchase it for $35 through Etsy.

The BXR 1221 2.1 Altec Lansing Speaker System

Posted: 19 Feb 2010 02:22 PM PST

If you’re on the lookout for a new set of speakers, Altec has a good looking set.  It’s not excessively different from any other set of speakers that you can pick up for your computer.  However, it’s just enough to make your computer look a little more interesting.  The shape itself is enough to make it stand out from the crowd without resorting to bright colors or odd themes.

The set comes with 2 speakers and a subwoofer.  It’d work great for either your desktop computer or even your laptop.  It has built-in power and volume control directly on the speaker.  The 4-inch subwoofer is said to offer powerful bass and clear highs.  It only comes in black, so if you were hoping for options, I’m afraid you’re out of luck.  You can purchase the set for $29.95 through Amazon.

Nooka’s ad campaign uses augmented reality

Posted: 19 Feb 2010 02:00 PM PST

We’ve already talked about how a mirror at a Japanese store can show customers what make-up looks like without putting it on their faces.

This conceptual ad campaign from Nooka also uses augmented reality, and it shows how a watch will look like without actually wearing it.

As you can see by the video, Nooka wants to put this weird paper band in major magazines. This band is removable, and it is full of QR codes. The user puts on the band, and he or she can then go into front of a webcam and the Nooka site.

From there, far out augmented reality takes over as the user figures out what watch goes well with them. In other words, it’s augmented reality accessorizing!

I don’t really see the effect being at all realistic. I mean, it looks like the Nooka is super-imposed on the wrist like an old-school special effect. However, does it have to look that realistic?

No, this is just a way to see how something looks, which means that it doesn’t have to look all that good.

Unfortunately, my Source does not have any word on when this new ad campaign is starting, or if it is starting. However, videos like these just don’t make themselves, which means that it had to be made for a reason.

Cherry And Leather Belt Earphones

Posted: 19 Feb 2010 01:38 PM PST

These earphones don’t just have a cherry pattern printed onto them.  Instead they look like cherries dangling from a stem.  Of course it’s a little easier to tell what they are if you buy the maroon or bright red versions, but the other colors look good too.  Thanks to one Japanese company not only can you get cherries, but Leather Belt Earphones too.  Yes, they are actually shaped like the end of a leather belt.  Not the side with the buckle, the one with the notches.  Why?  I’m really not sure.

It’s entirely possible there’s a rhyme or reason to the belt earphones, but I sincerely doubt it.  Both versions of the earphones come in 4 different colors.  The cherries you get white, maroon, red and light pink.  Then the belt you’ll get brown, black, blue and a very strange shade of yellow.  They’ll go on sale sometime in the middle of next month within Japan.  At that point the Pioneer earphones will cost right around $30.

CubeStormer solves Rubik’s Cubes in ten seconds

Posted: 19 Feb 2010 01:33 PM PST

I thought I’d give you readers at Coolest Gadgets a Friday treat with the CubeStormer.

The CubeStormer was designed by British engineer Mike Dobson, and it is made up of parts from several Lego Mindstorms sets connected to a computer. It is designed to solve a Rubik’s cube faster than any one of those cubists back in the early eighties.

You can watch the video after the jump, but you can see someone put a 3×3x3 inch Rubik’s cube in it, and it solves it in about twelve seconds. Two of these seconds are just to check its own work, apparently.

I’m guessing that the camera scans all six sides, and then somehow calculates how to spin the cube so it is solved as quickly as possible. I must say that this cube looks very well lubed, as it spins quite quickly. I can’t help but have flashbacks to my Rubik’s Cube days when the cube would spin with a little bit of friction.

Well, it appears that Mr. Dobson had invented his CubeStormer for pure viral video inspiration. It doesn’t look like Lego will be selling any CubeStormer kit any time soon, and I can’t tell how much of the CubeStormer is Lego and how much is some other kind of machine.

Comploo shelter from Bakoko is heated by compost

Posted: 19 Feb 2010 01:09 PM PST

Someday, we will all have to live in these tiny little saucer-shaped homes! Yeah, I know, I say that like that is a good thing.

In fact, this shelter/living quarters is probably the home of choice during the apocalypse, whether it be caused by robots or zombies.

This structure is from Japanese company design-firm known as Bakoko. Granted, there doesn’t appear to be a lot of room on the inside, but at least it is energy efficient.

You see, this Comploo house, as it is called. Uses compost waste for energy. It may not be enough energy to operate your your computer, but it will enough to heat your home.

Of course, I believe that composted energy is full of bacteria and germs that make it not feasible for a heating source for a regular home.

I’m sure Comploo thought of bacteria when they made this, which might be why the man in the picture is shoveling what looks like leaves in the window there.

Of course, they wouldn’t be windows if you only just put compost in them, would they? Perhaps this is why there is a huge transparent cap on the Comploo house, so you can see outside somehow.

Well, this is experimental technology right now, but I wouldn’t mind taking the Comploo on a camping trip.

Just one question: why is it called Comploo? Is that that some word mesh with the word igloo?

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-H55 digital camera

Posted: 19 Feb 2010 05:30 AM PST

The second of Sony’s most recent release where digital cameras are concerned would be the Cyber-shot DSC-H55 digital still camera, where this highly capable shooter looks pretty sleek and serious at the same time, boasting high zoom in a compact design. With the Sony Cyber-shot H55 camera, one will be able to enjoy the fruits of its 10x optical zoom Sony G lens with 25mm wide-angle (equivalent) that makes it more than capable of taking better shots from greater distances and of wider landscapes. Apart from that, it will also feature a 14.1 megapixel CCD sensor which allows you to which makes it more than capable of shooting panoramic shots in one sweeping motion with Sweep Panorama mode. Apart from that, one can also frame and view photos on its 3″ Clear Photo LCD screen (230,400 pixels).

Memories can also be recorded down for posterity thanks to its built-in 720p movie recording capability with its Optical SteadyShot image stabilization that further reduces blur in photos without compromising image quality. Apart from that, Sony has also thrown in Optical SteadyShot image stabilization with Active Mode that enables one to shoot smoother movie clips even though you are involved in some fairly active motion such as walking or light jogging. This is made possible thanks to a moveable lens element within the camera to shift with greater range of motion—10 times the range of the Optical SteadyShot feature at wide end in standard mode—to compensate for camera shake.

Another intelligent feature that Sony has thrown into the H55 would be a Self portrait timer which automatically takes the shot two seconds after one or two faces are detected, making it a snap (no pun intended) to capture smile-worthy self-portraits. The inclusion of Smile Shutter technology also ensures that all smiles are captured automatically, leaving no room for anyone to accuse you of being one gloomy fellow. The Sony DSC-H55 camera will come in black and silver colors this April as well, retailing for around $250.

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-TX5 digital camera

Posted: 19 Feb 2010 05:00 AM PST

When it comes to Sony and their range of Cyber-shot digital cameras, you can be more or less sure that these will come in ergonomic form factors with a stunning design, and the latest DSC-TX5 digital still camera is no different, living up to its Cyber-shot reputation. Just how thin is it, you ask? Well, it is no thicker than an inch – that is roughly the equivalent of a deck of cards, making it the thinnest and smallest certified waterproof (up to 10 feet deep) digital still camera in the world, where it comes complete with Optical SteadyShot image stabilization and touch operation. Not only that, this 10.2 megapixel shooter is also Sony's first digital still camera that is equipped with an "Exmor R" CMOS sensor which has been certified to be freeze proof down to 14 degrees Fahrenheit, shockproof up to about a 5-foot drop and dust proof. More on this device right after the jump.

We would like you to bear in mind that while it is waterproof up to 10 feet deep, it isn’t able to remain underwater for long, maxing out at just an hour, so you might want to bring along a waterproof watch with you should you decide to indulge in a little bit of underwater activities for the entire day. Still, an hour ought to be more than sufficient for casual divers, where you can also take advantage of the situation by shooting 720p high definition videos. As mentioned earlier, it is able to withstand cold weather as well as accidental drops, while being dust proof lets you tote it on a camping trip or mountain bike ride without worrying about it seizing up or dying at the most inopportune of moments.

Inside, you will find a foldable, 25 mm equivalent wide-angle 4x optical zoom Carl Zeiss Vario Tessor lens that is capable of delivering outstanding sharpness and high-quality photos without affecting the camera’s compact size. With a 3″ Clear Photo LCD Plus (230,400 pixels) wide touch screen display, you can even use it when swimming with fishes during your next snorkeling trip. Focusing on your subject, operating the menu and sharing photos and videos using but a single touch is possible whether wet or dry. The TX5 camera will be out later this April for approximately $350 in silver, black, pink, green and red colors.

Voice Interactive Personal Assistant

Posted: 19 Feb 2010 04:30 AM PST

Guess your wife might want to get you the Voice Interactive Personal Assistant if she is paranoid about you cheating behind her back. After all, who would want to have sex with a robot, much less start a relationship with one? We do wonder why are most gadgets equipped with the voice of a female when it comes to speech, perhaps it is the target market demographic that causes it to be so? Powered by a trio of AAA batteries, the $59.95 Voice Interactive Personal Assistant can also be powered when plugged into an AC outlet.

This is the personal assistant that records, schedules, and replays audio reminders via spoken commands. One verbal cue allows you to record up to 10 six-second voice memos that play at any specified time today, every day, or any day of the week. Say “Today’s Reminders” to hear all reminders for the day and when they will play, ensuring that you remember to take your medication, attend a grandchild’s recital, or complete a household chore. A simple verbal request for “Help” reminds you of the 12 commands the device recognizes. The unit can be heard clearly 20′ away and its dimmable 2″ blue LED numbers are viewable in any light. It’s also a voice-operated alarm clock that responds to verbal queries in a pleasant female voice.

Universal Network Cable

Posted: 19 Feb 2010 04:00 AM PST

Don’t you just love international standards? After all, it is those that prevent the world from being a complete mess as you will be able to use a USB cable (for example) regardless of which country you are at. Well, the Universal Network Cable sure sounds as though it will come in handy, especially when it allows you to alter the wiring standard with but a single click without having to worry about going from straight through to crossover. There are five cable types in total in a single connector – all you need to do is rotate the center to the cable that is required at that point in time, and you’re good to go. Among the cable options include rolled, crossover, straigh-through, loopback and T1, all going for a mere $24.99 a pop.
