T3 Motion three-wheeled vehicle, the R3

Posted: 15 Apr 2011 04:39 PM PDT

What you see here is the R3 from T3 Motion, and it is a three-wheeled vehicle that is not a car, but a motorcycle. At least, that is its classification.

The R3 is a full electric vehicle that has a range of 80 to 100 miles after a full charge, and a top speed of 70 miles per hour. You can see a video of it after the jump, but there isn’t any sound.

It has another feature that makes it very interesting, which it has a place to mount a Galaxy Tab. In all honesty, I believe that most models of cars in this decade should have something like this. Most newer cars are already iPad compatible, and if there is a place to put a tablet PC, then the tablet can be charged as well as running apps that will help you as you drive, like a GPS.

I’m sure that we all once thought that cars of the future would look like the R3. They look like smaller version of the cars seen in Steven Spielberg’s A.I. Artificial Intelligence. Whatever the case, it doesn’t look like this would be a mode of transportation for a long distance trip.

The cost of this will be about $25,000, which is pretty expensive for a two-seater motorcycle.

Billboard is powered by oranges

Posted: 15 Apr 2011 04:14 PM PDT

There is a popular science lesson that every high school physics or chemistry teacher must perform. It involves using foods to power a small light bulb, along with some nails and wire.

Citrus fruits, for example, are acidic and their juice helps to conduct electricity. It would appear that if you had enough oranges, you could power something big, like a billboard.

Fortunately, Tropicana has plenty of oranges, and what better promotion for their orange juice than this? Thousands of oranges have been used, and it took 3 months of testing before it worked, which also uses thousands of copper and zinc spikes to make it work.

This is the product of an advertising agency known as DDB, which must be headed by MacGyver or even MacGruber. You have to admit, it is an unconventional way of doing something that is relatively easier with electricity that is on the grid.

I wonder how many oranges it would take to light the lights at the Tropicana casino. I’m guessing that would probably be in the millions, and probably not a very economical system of power. However, it is very eco-friendly as we harness the power of orange juice. I suppose that fruit power will forever remain in high school science labs and not an option for sustainable energy. Too bad.

The Flying Nano could be the cheapest way to fly

Posted: 15 Apr 2011 03:50 PM PDT

This is the FlyNano, a boat that is also a plane designed by Aki Suokas.

The FlyNano is made of pure carbon fiber, and it is one of the lightest single-person aircrafts ever made at 154 pounds. It is capable of flying through the air for 43 miles on a gas-powered engine of 24bhp and 35bhp, and 25 miles on the electric model. The top speed is about 87 miles per hour, and it is probably one of the smallest aircrafts at 15.7 feet and a height of 4.9 feet.

It definitely looks quite fun for some water sports, like a Jet-ski that can fly. By the way, I have heard that no pilot’s license is required to fly these things.

Are you serious? The thing has a huge propeller in front of it, and no one wants me to properly learn how to use it? If that is true, then maybe the whole relationship of humanity to flying vehicles is about to take an interesting turn.

At first I thought that this was some sort of concept vehicle that will never see the light of day, but I have just heard from my Source that this FlyNano is going to be shipping in about three months. I don’t have a price, but I hope it is low enough to get me up in the air.

18 Foot Splashing Soaker Slide

Posted: 15 Apr 2011 06:30 AM PDT

No idea on what to do with your back yard that is currently home to plenty of weeds, with some dog poop randomly deposited because Fido has a free reign of the area? You might want to take stock of the situation with the 18 Foot Splashing Soaker Slide then, as this inflatable water slide will be able to give your kids (as well as their friends in the neighborhood) a time of their lives, soaking them with a fusillade of water from a built-in water squirter.

Hand- and foot-holds have been incorporated into the side of the slide’s tower, delivering easy climbing access for the more agile little ones. An inflated archway at the top will also come with a handlebar squirter that enables children to shower sliders and wet the slide so that no one’s butt gets heat burns in the process of having fun. A couple of bumps on the slide will deposit riders into the 6′ wide x 10″ deep pool.

Of course, $599.95 might seem a little steep in these economically challenging times, but what price do you put on your kids’ happiness?

For those who work in industries where you need to carry and transport heavy packages from one place to another using your hands, chances are you would have seen a chiropractor before to make sure those slipped discs are put back into their rightful position. Aching backs, sore muscles – those could be prevented or turned into a thing of the past with the Lift’n Buddy.

Nokia X7 set to rock and roll

Posted: 15 Apr 2011 05:30 AM PDT

Nokia’s market share when it comes to cell phones and smartphones might be declining at an alarming rate (the huge war over the smartphone arena has certainly heated up, with so many players entering the fray, and nobody giving Symbian any love), but that doesn’t mean the Finnish cell phone manufacturer is throwing in the towel. No sir, in fact, they have just announced their every intention of staying till the end with the Nokia X7′s announcement.

The Nokia X7 will come in a candybar form factor with a generous amount of footprint dedicated to its touchscreen display so that it will be able to keep up with the times (and the Joneses, in terms of physical design anyways). I think that this closely resembles that of the Sony Ericsson Xperia range, but that is just a personal opinion – what do you think? More on the Nokia X7 in the extended post.

The Nokia X7 was specially constructed for entertainment purposes as you can tell by its screen size, and when we say entertainment, we also mean media that you have thought up of yourself – all original. With its 8-megapixel full focus camera (that seems to be the norm these days), it can deliver 720p video recording as well as a dual LED flash to help you take better photos in low light or dark conditions.

Don’t worry about making sure there is enough memory right out of the box – the Nokia X7 will ship with a 8GB memory card pre-installed, and if that is maxed out, you can always temporarily fall back on the 350MB built-in operating memory. Of course, who are we to stop you from fitting in your very own 32GB microsDHC memory card if the need arises?

Measuring 119.7 x 62.8 x 11.9mm (thinner at the edges), the Nokia X7 will tip the scales at 146 grams, where you will be able to enjoy 2G/3G network connectivity and 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi support. Nice to know that Nokia has stuck to the standard 3.5mm audio connector for headphones which is what every good cell phone manufacturer should do. With a 1200mAH battery that has been rated for up to 450 hours of standby and 4.5 hours talktime on a 3G network, this seems to be quite the entertainment powerhouse. Too bad there isn’t 3D support on this, it would have certainly set it apart from the rest of the crowd.

Out in Q2 later this year, the Nokia X7 is tipped to arrive in Europe for €380 prior to taxes and subsidies.

Magellan eXplorist Pro 10 announced

Posted: 15 Apr 2011 05:00 AM PDT

Magellan intends to make another entry into the GIS market with their latest device, the eXplorist Pro 10. Just what is the Magellan eXplorist Pro 10 made out of? For starters, it has been described to be a “rugged, lightweight and waterproof GPS handheld device” that was specially designed for GPS/GIS data collection. Among that hardware specifications of the eXplorist Pro 10 would be a vibrant 3″ WQVGA transflective color touchscreen display, coupled with a 533MHz processor and 128MB RAM – where all of it combined is more than enough to deliver the relevant power required to work with maps and large data sets in a compact-handheld form factor.

As for other hardware specifications, the eXplorist Pro 10 will also be equipped with 4GB of onboard storage that can be further expanded to a cool 32GB as long as you slot in a microSD memory card. This would go some way in enabling large data sets including aerial photos so that they can be loaded in a jiffy.

When they say rugged, probably the minimum picture that comes to your mind would be having it come in a shockproof case while being able to withstand rain and some water – and you are correct, as the eXplorist Pro 10 will ship with a rugged IPX-7 waterproof casing that shakes off minor knocks without missing a beat. Not only that, it is lightweight in nature, making it the ideal GIS data collection handheld device for GIS professionals who want to collect GPS/GIS data.

The Pro 10 is capable of delivering 3 to 5 meters accuracy in real-time thanks to its internal GPS receiver, or you can opt for it to function with a supported Bluetooth enabled GPS receiver in order to achieve sub-meter or 1-3 meter accuracy.

Thanks to its integrated Bluetooth wireless technology, users are able to hook up laser rangefinders, barcode scanners, and other Bluetooth-enabled devices for convenient cable-free solutions. There is also a 3.2-megapixel camera which is used to capture geotagged photos and video, while an on-board voice recorder is able to let you enjoy hands-free note taking.

Other specifications include a 3D compass, pressure altimeter and barometer. Now for the more interesting part – how much juice can the two AA batteries offer? We’re looking at up to 15 hours, now how about that? A standard Windows Mobile 6.5 operating system runs the Pro 10 in terms of operating system, and it will be available for $699.99.

Self Stirring Electric Pot

Posted: 14 Apr 2011 08:40 PM PDT

They say that too many cooks spoil the soup, which is why it is advisable to have two cooks at most in the kitchen. What happens when you’re shorthanded and need to whip up a delicious meal for the rest of the family that day? Fret not, the Self Stirring Electric Pot is here to save the day, and as its name suggests, this electric cooker will be able to automatically stir ingredients, freeing you to prepare other parts of the meal.

A spatula has been specially integrated into the bottom of the pot, where it will continue to rotate autonomously as food cooks, helping you mix ingredients and lifting bits of food which would otherwise stick and burn. The spatula itself can be adjusted to continue stirring until you turn it off, or just intermittently, so that a simmering soup’s ingredients are well incorporated.

Capable of adjusting from 200º F to 375º F, it lets you sauté, sear, braise, boil, or simmer, where the tempered glass lid works great in retaining moisture during cooking. At $99.95, why not get this for Mother’s Day?

Day/Night Mug

Posted: 14 Apr 2011 08:36 PM PDT

Want to have two mugs for the price of one? That’s easily done with the Day/Night Mug, where £12.99 will net you this rather cool looking piece of drinking equipment that is set to let you stand out from the rest of your colleagues in the office pantry.

When it is cool and residing in the cupboard (or having an ice cold liquid inside), then you will find that the global surface shown is dark, with some lights in major cities there for realism’s sake. In order to play God, just pour some hot water inside to mix your favorite cup of Java, and speak the powerful words, “Let there be light!”, and you will find that this heat-reactive mug will transform into the standard blue world map. No idea on how many times the transformations can occur before the material starts to lose its ability, but we believe it will be for a long, long time.

MSI X370 notebook begins to ship

Posted: 14 Apr 2011 08:09 PM PDT

Looking for a new notebook as your current one wheezes its day away, having a hard drive which is noisier than your 10-year old car? After browsing around, what caught your fancy? If you’re tired of the usual names like Dell and Lenovo, then you might want to check out what else Taiwan is offering apart from delicious roadside stalls that serve deep fried snacks – we’re talking about MSI and their expertise in rolling out computer hardware, where the company has begun to ship its X370 notebook.

The MSI X370 notebook is a 13.4" model that will not drain your battery in an instant, since it runs on the efficient AMD Dual-Core E-350 APU platform that is capable of delivering up to 10 hours of juice without sacrificing on exceptional graphics performance, of course. Gamers will be well pleased to hear that, but if you are really serious about gaming on a notebook, then you might be happier with model that has a larger display, right?

Tipping the scales at 3.1 pounds, the MSI X370 notebook is capable of delivering a fully immersive HD multimedia entertainment experience, thanks to the AMD Radeon HD 6310 Discrete-Class graphics that boasts Microsoft DirectX 11 support. Not only that, battery life is further conserved thanks to the notebook’s power saving LED backlit display that delivers bright color while enhancing the overall picture quality.

According to Andy Tung, vice president of sales for MSI US, "We designed the X370 for those who want a fully functioning notebook in a compact form, with long battery life. Most of us think of battery life in terms of convenience: time away from our office or power cord. It's innovators like Smallbean that remind us that longer battery life also means using less power, which is what truly makes a difference in rural areas, and around the world."

Interestingly enough, the MSI X370 X-Slim notebook isn’t going to burn a hole in your pocket either, with it starting from just $599.99 – now is that cheap or what in comparison to other gaming notebooks? Of course, don’t expect super fast graphics in the highest resolution, but it’ll do for the moment.

HTC Sensation 4G is set to wow

Posted: 14 Apr 2011 07:54 PM PDT

HTC has certainly done quite well for itself over the years, coming up with phones that play to the gallery, supporting different operating systems across multiple handsets just so that their eggs will not be in a single basket. This strategy has served them more than well, and with the inclusion of the HTC Sense user interface over the stock Android UI, it has worked in their favor with Samsung and the rest of the smartphone market being unable to come near HTC in this aspect.

Well, it pleases us to bring you the latest model from HTC known as the Sensation 4G – where this smartphone will dance to the 4G spectrum as you can tell from its name. Using premium design elements to make sure that it goes along with your expensive suit nicely, the HTC Sensation 4G will also carry on the “tradition” of featuring the latest customer-focused HTC Sense experience.

T-Mobile is preparing to roll out the HTC Sensation 4G sometime this summer, although an exact release date and pricing have yet to be revealed. Your eyes will notice the pleasant aesthetics, not to mention enjoy the 4.3-inch qHD display that is capable of rolling out high-resolution widescreen viewing. Don’t worry about not having enough processing firepower to keep the Sensation 4G going with the latest games on the Android platform, since it is powered by a dual core 1.2GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor.

Apart from that, there is also an 8-megapixel camera which will be able to shoot great looking shots no matter where you are, while the new instant capture feature lets you capture the current moment without any worries on missing out on the moment. It can also handle full HD video in 1080p resolution, complete with full stereo sound, at up to 30 frames per second – now isn’t that a class above most of the other handsets that you’ve come across?

Of course, with such high end specifications, you can be sure that the price point isn’t going to be cheap, so expect it to be on the more expensive side of things when it comes out – say, to the tune of $200 with a 2-year contract?

The EyeReader app on your iPhone – Lets you Read the Small Print

Posted: 14 Apr 2011 06:57 PM PDT

First, let me tell you that I have in fact reached an age where I require very subtle vision correction, Okay, I have reached an age where I can't see the television 6 feet in front of me without my glasses on, let's face it, being "almost 30" for the 10th time isn't all its cracked up to be, and when I find myself without my cool librarian glasses, I'm as blind as a bat.

So it was interesting to check out the EyeReader by Net|Soft Engineering. EyeReader is the first, in a series of  new "Silver Apps" – applications geared towards users 45 and older. Utilizing the iPhone 4′s full 3.5-inch widescreen display and 4 bright LED lights, EyeReader illuminates any surface and offers up to 5X magnification, it also gives users the ability to zoom in and out with two fingers via touch-screen technology. It’s perfect for reading menus, playbills, instructions on prescription medication or any fine print.

The brainchild of engineer Gerry Lavender, EyeReader takes only half a megabyte and is just $1.99 to download from the iTunes store.

“Older adults are looking for apps that meet their needs,” says Lavender. “You may forget your reading glasses, but you’re never without your iPhone.  As a Baby Boomer myself I fully understand the challenges seniors face and it’s been the inspiration for Silver Apps, all designed to make life easier for that population.

Lavender is already looking ahead to the evolution of EyeReader creating a version compatible with Android phones and he’s also developing some apps for the new iPad. Interesting stuff, that might come in handy should I ever admit to getting older.

Available now for only $1.99.
