The Floating Flamer – Swim Over and Get Me a Cheeseburger!

Posted: 25 Jan 2012 08:01 AM PST

I’m guessing that most of us have already enjoyed the pleasure of a water lounger and a floating ice chest and of course who hasnt enjoyed a swim up bar? Oh the pleasures of the water, sun and the sand. What could be better than all that you ask yourself… and now you actually have an answer… The Flaming Floater! Now just wait, before you guess what that means, let me tell you.

Imagine if you will, a hot summer day at the lake, your friends are gathered together, swimming and having a few beers and you launch an incredible floating grill… steaks and hamburgers, hot dogs for the kids, your buddies hanging around the grill, waist deep in the inviting water. How cool are you? Literally?

Evidently the guys that developed the Floating Flamer were sitting around outside after a few drinks (who would have guessed?) and some barbeque, and lo and behold, the idea of the Floating Flamer was born.

They made a few prototypes and did some test grilling (and I’m guessing some more drinking) and they now have not one, but two Floating Flamers that we can choose from. Floating Flamers offers a "Topless Model" and the "Grand Flamer" to serve up all the flaming goodness that your friends and family can handle.

The smaller Floating Flamer seems to be small enough to throw in your truck and go, and I can see myself being very popular at the lake this 4th of July. I can even see myself “tailgaiting” off the back of my boat. But I cant help wondering, does this thing come with an anchor?

No word on price yet, but you can head on over to floatingflamer.com to drop them an e-mail… you know, if they’re not at the lake.

Command & Conquer coded in HTML5

Posted: 25 Jan 2012 08:00 AM PST

There are moments in life when we look at a particular object and think, “Now why didn’t I think of this before?” I am quite sure that many of us who spent our teenage years in the mid-1990s would have played the game Command & Conquer at some point in time or another, where the almighty tank could be stopped by something as simple as sandbags, and had hours and hours of fun honing our RTS skills in front of the computer. Well, a hardcore coder decided that playing the game today on a legacy system is just too mainstream, and coded the entire Command & Conquer in HTML5, where the entire thing runs on 69k of Javascript.

Aditya Ravi Shankar built the clone as part of his attempt to improve his coding skills, where he gave himself an entire month to do so, building the game in the browser while going through the original game’s files in order to get sprites, sounds and specs just the way it was. According to Shankar, “In hindsight, I might have wanted to take smaller steps and make a tower defense game instead of jumping directly into an RTS. Trying to do the whole thing in under a month all by myself wasn’t the smartest idea.”

Still, he got the job done, and there were some glitches here and there during testing, such as tanks getting stuck in the sea, and it works best in Chrome or Firefox. If you want to help improve Shankar’s work, check out the source code here.

Popar Books – Reach Out and Grab you… really!

Posted: 25 Jan 2012 06:29 AM PST

So here we go, even our books are becoming high tech, I can see it now, gone are the days of the quiet library. No longer will we feel the evil eye and hear the stern Shhhhhh… of the librarian. Someday, and that day may be here sooner rather than later, the library will sound like an arcade, with all the bells and whistles, lights flashing and spinning, books just begging to be read… literally. But I have to say, I’m alright with it, in fact I’m okay with anything that gets my kid to read. A high tech library… can you imagine it?

Well Popar Toys sure can, Popar Toys is using Augmented Reality (AR) technology to create an immersive learning experience that will allow its users to see the books printed pages blossom with incredible virtual 3D objects and animations that will seem to just jump off the pages. The “magic” works by way of a webcam and Popar’s specially coded books and cards, that when held up for the camera, seem to “come alive” around its user, right on your computer screen! Check out the video after the jump…

These kinds of virtual reality applications have been around for a little while, but Popar is the first company in the game to be able to offer very reasonably priced books and toys that you can get your hands on right now, and you won’t even have to mortgage your house to bring them home. The technology will work  on both a PC or a Mac-based computer and it will require a webcam. Please note that at least for now,  Popar is offering free webcams with a purchase of a Popar® Book Starter Kit.

Wow, kids books that come alive in your hands… amazing to me, next it will be instruction manuals, cook books and encyclopedias then mens magazines… oh, now I’ve gone and spoiled it….

The books and toys start at around 10 bucks and they’re available now at  www.PoparToys.com Visit the website for more information or to watch the video.

Hot Pockets extruder makes for one lazy Xbox 360 gamer

Posted: 25 Jan 2012 06:00 AM PST

Gamers are known to be a lazy bunch already – where they are willing to survive on nothing but fast food deliveries and Coke, just to make sure that their gaming experience is interrupted as little as possible. Modding guru Ben Heck has come up with something interesting for the sloths among the Xbox 360 crowd – the Hot Pockers extruder that is attached to the Xbox 360 game controller. This unique plastic carrier comes with a manual slider that is able to snugly hold a Hot Pocket, and you can move it forward easily as you eat.

When attached to the top of the game controller’s charge and play plug, you get the ideal device which allows every Hot Pockets lover to enjoy a tasty snack without skimping on their gaming time. Even better is, you need not stop the game, and neither are there dishes to wash up after you are done with your food. How about that? Hopefully you do not mind the crumbs and perhaps, a little bit of grease around your controller during the more frenzied moments of gaming while eating.

Rokform Rokbed v3 iPhone case

Posted: 25 Jan 2012 05:30 AM PST

When you have a device like the iPhone and the iPod touch selling like hot cakes, and folks do actually camp outside your store a couple of days before the actual launch date just to be one of the first in the world to lay hands on the latest iPhone, you know that you are on to a winner here. Needless to say, with such a huge market base, third party manufacturers too, are more than happy to see such a successful product being introduced to the world, as it means another avenue for profit has just opened up. The accessories market for the iPod and iPhone range is definitely a money spinning one, especially when you get your formula right.

Rokform intends to make a splash with their unique Rokbed v3 iPhone case, having picked up an International CES Innovations 2012 Design and Engineering Awards Honoree in the process. This case for the iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S features outstanding design and engineering, and the first time you lay your eyes on it, you would definitely be surprised at the bright, bold colors and cutting edge form factor.

As we all know, looking good alone will not carry a product through these days, as consumers are far more informed to base their purchase decision on looks alone. The Rokbed v3 was specially designed to be the most functional iPhone 4/4s case ever made to date, where it will feature an integrated lock mechanism, an anti-slip grip, a detachable lanyard and an optional magnet insert. Constructed using tough polycarbonate which has been re-enforced in critical areas, the Rokbed v3 is also one of the most protective iPhone 4/4s cases available.

The upper and lower frames are made out of injection molded polycarbonate, while a thermoplastic Polyurethane (TPU) non slip grip insert ensures even those with sweaty palms will not accidentally send their iPhone flying out from their hands because of a wave. The remote locking system allows it to be mounted on just about anywhere, and there is also a removable hi tensile wrist lanyard. It comes in a wide range of bright color options for you to choose from, and will retail for $39 a pop. Not bad, considering how it was designed, engineered and made in the USA.
