Hands on with the Rockus 3D Speaker System

Posted: 11 Apr 2011 04:13 PM PDT

We reported on the Antec soundscience Rockus 3D 2.1 speaker system before, and I got a chance to try it out for myself.

The soundscience Rockus 3D 2.1 speaker system is designed for those that are into 3D gaming or movies on their home theater. Some of you, like myself, are probably wondering how the 3D sound works on this.

After all, isn’t 3D a visual thing, not audio? However, I believe that the idea of the sound is to project the sound so you will feel something go by your face like it was actually there.

3D is just one of the modes of this speaker systems, and it can be turned to normal music mode from the weird wired remote that looks like a tiny can. It controls the volume by turning the top. Don’t ask me why there isn’t a wireless remote.

I found that the speakers and the sub-woofer are pretty loud, and are definitely worth trying out for yourself. I have no idea how well the 3D will work for you, and you might have to find your personal sweet spot.

I believe that the last time we reported on this sound system, it cost about $249. I’m not certain why the price drop, but it is now a cost of $199 here.

How crowd scenes are done in some movies: Inflatable people

Posted: 11 Apr 2011 03:44 PM PDT

I’ve always wondered about scenes in films where large crowds are needed. Especially in older films, where they didn’t know anything about computer generated crowds or other special effects. I’m pretty certain that many scenes in epics like The Ten Commandments and Ben Hur actually used thousands of extras.

Of course, there are alternatives to buying thousands extras or visual effects. Sometimes full-sized photos are used to fill crowds. I once heard that in A League of Her Own, director Penny Marshall was telling a crowd to move, only to find out that the spectators were just life-sized photos. I have no idea if that story is real, but I can imagine her embarrassment.

However, if you want your crowd to be three-dimensional, you might consider going with The Inflatable Crowd Company, which does just what its name implies.

The company has been used in such films as Seabiscuit, The King’s Speech, and The Fighter. Those are pretty low-budget films, but they have also been used in bigger-budget blockbusters like Iron Man 2 and Oceans 13. I take it many of the crowd scenes were a result of blow-up dolls that had wings and clothes.

It sounds hard to believe that this trick works, but as long as the long-shot angles look right, who can tell the difference? Next time I see a movie with a crowd in it, I will be looking for signs of the inflatables.

Eight-legged Wooden Walking Table

Posted: 11 Apr 2011 03:18 PM PDT

Well, I suppose that someone was bound to make it sooner or later, but this wooden table can walk.

In case you are wondering, it isn’t a table that can walk on its own through motorized power. If you watch the video, it looks like the walking only works if someone is pushing it. You can watch the video after the jump to see it in motion.

I really don’t think it would have been that much trouble to put a motor on this thing, but I didn’t make it. It was Wouter Scheublin who designed it, and I don’t think I have a right to critique him. After all, I have been trying to make a walking Lego toy for years.

If you haven’t watched the video, then you should check out the spider-like crawls. It reminds me of something from War of the Worlds, and if it could go across the room on its own power, I think that The Sorcerer’s Apprentice would be the proper soundtrack.

I wonder if Mr. Scheubin got the idea from a scene in Star Wars: The Phantom Menace with a scene where a throne is walking on mechanical legs. I wonder how stable this table is. In other words, could you move this table with a drink on it?

It doesn’t look like you can buy one of these, but I’m sure people will want them because it is rather neat. I guess a table with wheels is just not good enough.

Panini HRX video trading card announced

Posted: 11 Apr 2011 11:38 AM PDT

Remember the name Panini? I certainly do with fondness, since during my younger days, there was this sticker book that required me to buy plenty of loose packs of stickers, hoping that they would be enough for me to complete my collection. Sure, I even went hungry at times to purchase more stickers instead of food, much to the chagrin of my parents. Guess Panini has taken a leap into the 21st century with their Panini HRX video trading cards.

Just what does Panini HRX stand for? We’re looking at Highlight Reel Xperience, which is also the industry’s first video trading card. Panini HRX will roll out as a limited insert in the company’s NBA Totally Certified when June comes about.

Taking a good 18 months to develop into perfection, the Panini HRX is also the industry’s first video trading card that will be individually autographed by each featured athlete. Since each vard is personally autographed and incorporates HD-quality video that are specific to each player, you can be sure that these would be extremely pricey in the second hand market. Kinda makes me want to start collecting trading cards all over again, I remember clearly the Venom vs Spiderman hologram that was super rare back in my day.

According to Jason Howarth, Vice President of Marketing for Panini America, “We had a number of goals with Panini HRX but the overarching theme throughout every stage of development was to ensure we maintained the integrity of a trading card, and incorporated compelling content and video that was both relevant and brought sports fans closer to the world’s best athletes. Lastly, we wanted to make sure that there was a level of uniqueness and collectibility with every Panini HRX card.”

This new move might just make trading cards desirable yet again, and instead of collecting Pokemon, kids might prefer something more physical this time around if Panini gets their marketing and advertising engines just right.

iPhone Photo Printer

Posted: 11 Apr 2011 11:33 AM PDT

So you use your iPhone’s camera a whole lot – what are you going to do with the digital library of images that you have amassed over time? Surely you aren’t going to just let it be stashed away in some hard drive somewhere, do you? How about printing those photos out for physical reminder of those memories? Instead of going through the tried-and-tested method of transferring photos to a computer and using a printer to churn out some copies, here is the self-explanatory iPhone Photo Printer.

This $159.95 purchase is the first of its kind that delivers photo quality pictures straight from a docked iPhone or iPod touch, without the need for special software or computer. Of course, the downside is you can’t edit those photos, but then again the iPhone takes pretty decent images in the first place. Heck, there aren’t even ink cartridges to worry about, since it prints crystal-clear 300 dpi resolution pictures with vibrant colors thanks to a patented paper that has been embedded with yellow, magenta, and cyan dye crystals.

These photos printed out are smudge- and tear-proof, fade- and water-resistant, so that ought to deliver some peace of mind to you. It will also play nice with Android phones (now isn’t that surprising?), the iPad and its successor. Each purchase is accompanied by one paper pack that delivers up to a dozen prints.
