Arcane Arcade Table gets updated

Posted: 08 Sep 2010 02:53 PM PDT

Small game consoles have definitely damaged business for arcade machine sellers, but you still can’t help but love the classic that started it all.  Thankfully there are still certain companies that like to make very stylish and current arcade themed furniture.  Surface Tension’s Arcane Arcade Table may not be exactly new, but it’s getting some updates to make it an even sweeter deal.

The updated version will be getting Sonos ZP90 wireless ZonePlayer, making it possible to make the table a part of your Sonos network.  It’s also taking a step up from the original 190inch LCD size and going on up to 26-inches.  In addition to that, it’ll ship out with Windows 7.  The table currently features Intel i7 CPU, 8GB 1366 DDR3 RAM and 256GB SSD.  The table itself has hi-gloss sides and a slightly longer control panel that houses 2 x 7-button layouts and a spinner.  I believe it goes without saying though that these tables are going to cost you a whole lot of cash.

MacBook Cutting Board

Posted: 08 Sep 2010 02:10 PM PDT

MacBook fans are serious about their Apple products.  You have to be in order to swallow the price tag that comes with all Apple products.  I do believe when I bought my MacBook I called it an investment.  Now that the keyboard is fried all of one year later and I’m looking at a huge repair bill, I’m starting to question my own sanity.  However, the truth is I still love my MacBook, despite that I’m using a USB keyboard to be able to work it.  If you’re just as head over heels for your MacBook, here’s one kitchen product you just have to have.

Mac lovers should never be stuck cutting up their food on a normal cutting board.  No, you need one made to look identical to your beloved MacBook.  They didn’t use just any wood to make this either, it’s made out of apple tree wood.  You can purchase one for EUR 43 or right around $54 by going here.

Wine Bottle USB Speaker and FM Radio

Posted: 08 Sep 2010 01:38 PM PDT

I can’t say that I ever really thought I’d be writing up a speaker shaped like a wine bottle, but despite the odd shape selection it’ll do the trick.  This bottle may not be the classiest wine bottle you’ve ever seen, but it’d make a cute radio to put in your kitchen or wherever you store your bottles of wine.  Plus, it’s highly unlikely that anyone else you know will have the exact same speaker.

This functions as a speaker for your MP3 player or even for your computer.  It also is a perfectly functional FM radio.  All of that means that it obviously has a 3.5mm audio cable and a USB charging cable.  There is also a stand to make sure the bottle doesn’t go rolling away.  It keeps itself up and running by using a built-in rechargeable lithium-ion battery.  You can pick one up for $27 through Gadget4all.

Bag or Bike: The Electric Bike that is also a cart

Posted: 08 Sep 2010 09:00 AM PDT

It is very common in the technological world to see one item that can be changed into another. Belgian designer Natacha Lesty has given us an interesting multi-use creation with the “Bag or Bike”.

I’m not certain whether “Bag or Bike” is the product’s actual name, but despite any fancy name, it is downright useful.

First of all, it is a unique electric bike. I don’t really think that I have ever used an electric bike, but my Source says that it cuts down on your carbon footprint. That is really starting to become an environmental buzzword, isn’t it? Second of all, after you ride your electric bike to someplace, like the grocery mart, you can change it into a cart, or, as my Source says, “a trolley case”.

So someone has finally figured out a way to bike to the store and take back a lot of groceries with you. I remember that I did this once. Yes, I was dumb enough to ride a bike to the store to get groceries and didn’t realize that I can’t take a bunch of bags back with me on a bike. Guess when I realized this fact. That’s right, after I had bought five bags full of groceries.

This Bag or Bike is apparently in the concept stage for now, so it will be a long time before we’ll be seeing this on the streets or sidewalks.

Doctor Who’s Sonic Screwdriver is now a Wiimote

Posted: 08 Sep 2010 08:30 AM PDT

I don’t know if you are aware of this, but this blog comes out of the UK. Another UK franchise that has the coolest gadgets is none other than Doctor Who.

If you are not familiar with the show, it is about a time traveler. It has been on in some form since 1968, and the good doctor has been portrayed by ten different actors. I believe that the SyFy channel airs it now.

Some things about the show in the early days are quite dated, but some things have remained constant, like the Doctor’s Sonic Screwdriver. This was a tool that could operate any lock, mechanical or electronic. Apparently someone thought it would look good in Wiimote form.

The plan is to market this Wiimote with a Wii game that will be released in October known as Doctor Who: Return to Earth.

I suppose this will be good for all Doctor Who fans. Do Doctor Who fans have a name like Star Trek has Trekkies and Twilight has Twi-hards? Perhaps they should be called Who-sers, not to be confused with the film Hoosiers.

Anyway, my Source doesn’t seem to have a price or availability date on this product, but if the company that makes this Sonic Screwdriver Wiimote is smart, then it should be out before the game’s release in October.

Garmin introduces the Nuvi 2200 and 2300 GPS series

Posted: 08 Sep 2010 08:00 AM PDT

I am not certain if the market for stand-alone GPS devices is strong, but I believe that Garmin still is the leader in a business that is slowly being replaced by smartphone applications.

The company has just recently announced two new lines in their Nuvi series, which includes the 2200 (2200, 2250, and 2250LT) and 2300 (2300, 2300LM, 2350, 2350LT, 2350MT, and 2370LT) series.

Both the 2200 and 2300 models have Garmin’s ecoRoute fuel-efficient routing and driving tools technology, as well as My Trends to save your favorite destinations and automatically remember routes and travel times. They are also come preloaded with maps of the lower 48 United States, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Grand Bahama Island, Nassau, and the Cayman Islands.

The 2250 and 2350 have the same maps, but include Mexico. The 2250LT and 2350LT have the LT suffix because they get lifetime traffic. As for the 2360LT and 2360MT, they have all the features plus Bluetooth wireless hands-free calling. The most advanced is, of course, the 2370LT, which is preloaded with North American and European maps.

All these units are available on the Garmin website. The Garmin 2200 is $149.99, the 2250 is $159.99, and the 2250LT is $179.99. The 2300 is $199.99, the 2300LM is $239.99. The 2350 is $209.99, the 2350LT is $229.99, and the 2350MT is $269.99. The 2360LT is $259.99 and the 2360MT is $299.99, and the 2370LT is the same price.

Money Machine 2 turns you into a neat freak

Many of us have plenty of loose change lying around, and chances are we don’t do too much with them, only to find it to be a royal headache when it comes to sorting out the various denominations. Well, turn loose change into neat stacks with the Money Machine 2 – this unique device will be able to keep track of your daily deposits, and sorting all coins out the moment they are dropped within. Withdrawal is made easy as you can wrap them in rolls for future use, such as at a parking meter. It doesn’t matter whether you are dealing with pennies, nickels, dimes and quarters, this device will be able to count and sort coins into neat stacks automatically, with an electronic display giving you a running total of your "deposits" while stacks are specially marked to depict the number of each coin that you own. Whenever the going gets tough, just turn the base and unlock the tray for ready wrapped rolls of coins. Just make sure you have at least a couple of AA batteries handy to get the $12.99 device going.

Guard Dog for your working desk

Posted: 08 Sep 2010 06:00 AM PDT

Do you love maintaining your personal space and jealously guard it as though it is the elixir of life itself? The Guard Dog which is USB-powered might just do the trick then – after all, it will growl menacingly at anyone who ventures too close to your cubicle for comfort. This is made possible thanks to a built-in motion sensor which will alert the Guard Dog to intruders, and unlike your average pooch that might be tempted by a poisoned piece of meat, this one won’t accept treats of any kind albeit living up to the adage that his bark is worse than his bite! You can choose to have the Guard Dog run off USB power (great during office hours) or battery (if you’re elsewhere away from a computer). Nice to know that it will already ship with a trio of AA batteries to help you get started right out of the box. The price to pay might be a wee bit steep for most people though – we’re talking about $79 here.

Getac gets tough with V200 notebook

Posted: 08 Sep 2010 05:30 AM PDT

Getac knows that it is a dog-eat-dog world out there, which is why the company has released its latest rugged notebook known as the V200. This is no ordinary notebook since it will come in a convertible form factor, which also places it as the most powerful as well as fully rugged convertible notebook to date in the world. Underneath the hood, don’t be fooled as it has enough processing muscle to handle most of today’s tasks without missing a beat – we’re talking about an Intel Core i7-620LM processor that runs at 2.0GHz, maxing out at 2.8GHz with Intel Turbo Boost Technology. Not only that, you will also benefit from 4MB of Intel L3 Smart Cache which further improves efficiency as well as increasing processor speed. It ain’t a power hog either, sipping just 25-watts.

You can use it for vehicle mounting or field use, where the V200 convertible will feature a 12.1-inch widescreen display while boasting Getac's very own 1,200 NITs QuadraClear technology that lets you read whatever tiny fonts there are in a crystal clear manner even when you are working under direct sunlight. Yup, that’s extreme all right, and the display also offers a resistive multi-touch capability which lets you manipulate icons and menus on the display using single and multi-finger gestures even with gloves worn. Now that ought to be a relief to most workers under such harsh environments since it would be a hassle to remove and wear gloves over and over again when operating the V200.

The V200 is MIL-STD-810G and IP65 compliant, coming in a full magnesium alloy casing while being able to function in low-temperature environments of up to -20C. Not only that, additional hardware specifications include a shock mounted 320GB hard drive, sealed I/O caps, doors to prevent damage from solid particles and moisture, an 80GB solid state drive option, a full-size, 88-key keyboard, 802.11n WiFi and Bluetooth 2.1 connectivity, 10/100/1000 Giga LAN support, GPS, 3G-Gobi 2000 multi-band wireless and a host of other interface connectivity options. You can also hot-swap the battery when the action gets too hot and heavy for the V200 – now how about that? With a 5-year warranty, this will get obsolete before you need to replace it due to a malfunction.

Pioneer has just announced a new speaker range

Posted: 08 Sep 2010 05:00 AM PDT

Pioneer Electronics has a spanking new line up of speakers for home theater and music reproduction buffs, where they were specially designed from the ground up thanks to Pioneer USA's chief speaker engineer, Andrew Jones. The new line will come with bookshelf (SP-BS21-LR, SP-BS41-LR), floorstanding (SP-FS51-LR) and center channel (SP-C21) speakers alongside a subwoofer (SW-8), where all of them were specially engineered to deliver exceptional audio performance, regardless of whether it is used as a two channel music system or a full 7.1 channel home theater system.

The whole Home Theater and Music Speaker line will make full use of radio frequency bonded, curved cabinets that will deliver a distinct cosmetic look as well as a stiffer and stronger structure, which ultimately results in better sound reproduction thanks to reduced cabinet resonance. You won’t find cheap stuff in there – we’re talking about quality components within and without, where each speaker uses flush mounted grills for individual drivers instead of a single grill for the whole front portion of the cabinet. Cloth also has no role to play here, since the speaker grills themselves are made out of metal for superior protection. As for the grills themselves, it is like a BMW – adding to the overall cosmetic appeal of the speaker.

In order to introduce improved sound quality, Pioneer's new speaker series will rely on a sophisticated multi-component crossover which can achieve a more accurate frequency division as well as a more precise re-creation of sound. All speakers within its line will also come with gold-plated 5-way binding posts that deliver superior conductivity and flexible connection methods. Depending on which model you decide to bring home today, Pioneer’s latest Home Theater and Music Speaker line will retail anywhere from $79 all the way to $199 – nothing that will break the bank, really, and yet it will greatly enhance what your home can offer in terms of entertainment.

This could be what 2014 is like

Posted: 07 Sep 2010 09:30 PM PDT

You should take a few minutes to watch this video by TAT. Honestly, I have never heard of TAT, but “TAT’s technology powers 470+ million devices, in more than 15 percent of all new phones in 2010 and 20 percent of all touch phones. TAT’s technology also powers DTVs, STBs, car clusters and tablets”.

This video, which shows the future of touchscreen technology, shows us “a normal day in 2014″. In all honesty, I am not certain that we will be this advanced by then.

I mean, just watch this video after the jump. In four years, I’m pretty certain that we’ll be able to shut off the alarm clocks on our mobile phones by waving, but I’m not certain whether they will have stretchable touchscreens.

I’m also not certain about the the desktops. They are transparent screens that are at least 27 inches from diagonal to diagonal. Will we be able to turn an image around backwards so someone on the other side of the screen can see it?

Then there is the whole sharing from screen to screen. Sure, we can do wireless transfers of files from one mobile to the other, but not like what you see here.

So, is this view of the future too optimistic? I’ll let you decide that. Better yet, Bookmark this article now and promise to read it in 2014, and we’ll see how right these TAT people are.

Ferrowatch relies on magnetic principles to tell time

Posted: 07 Sep 2010 06:45 PM PDT

Telling the time has gotten a whole lot more complex than before as it no longer requires a simple glance at your wrist any more. Tokyoflash, long time purveyors of complex timepieces that are hard to tell, have come up with the Ferrowatch that holds a magnetically sensitive liquid (known as Ferrofluid) which is located under the glass face. A magnetic charge will attract the fluid to different positions within the watch, resulting in the indication of hours and minutes. Needless to say, telling the time then is as simple as can be, but the method used to arrive at such a state is impressive to say the least. Some people might prefer to have illumination within, but we think that this would make a great timepiece to impress the chicks.

Hmmm, summer’s out already with fall kicking in – does that mean it is time to shed that pair of sunnies? We think not, especially when you own a pair of Immortal Video Sunglasses that are going for £249. They won’t lengthen your life on this earth in any way, but are capable of recording high quality videos at whatever you look at when wearing them, courtesy of a tiny pinhole camera that is located right out in front. Use hand gestures to control your cellphone

Posted: 07 Sep 2010 06:33 PM PDT

Multi-touch gestures are something that many people have come to be familiar with ever since the iPhone made a splash a few years ago. Well, those gestures are great for folks who find a new way to manipulate their cellphones and smartphones, where it is known as the “Moove” MP3 Player. eyeSight Mobile Technologies might just have the solution for those who are interested in a new method of manipulating a user interface – after all, they are the developer of Hand Gesture Interface solutions for cellphones and consumer electronics devices, and have just announced the successful launch of a special new application (the “Moove” as mentioned earlier) that enables one to control a MP3 player software on a cellphone with simple hand gestures.

The “Moove” MP3 player is controlled by eyeSight’s Touch Free Interface technology and is currently available only for Nokia 5800 XpressMusic users. Currently, the application is one hot ticket item – having being delivered to more than half a million cellphones via Nokia’s Ovi Store in under four months. The application has actually dominated OVI’s Top Downloads list for this device for a long time already.

The Hand Gesture Interface will offer interaction that is way beyond what traditional touch does, and has been adopted at an enthusiastic rate by users of touch screen devices. eyeSight is currently in talks with cellphone manufactures to license the Hand Gesture Interface to be integrated into new smartphones – we can’t wait for this to happen, although we are pretty sure Apple would snub their noses at this but we might just find the plethora of HTC smartphones coming with Moove capability down the road since their MP3 player in Android isn’t exactly the polished apple. Hand gestures to control track playback as well as volume levels? We’ll take it – with open arms, to boot. After all, it can also be applied to any camera-enabled device, further increasing its value in the food chain.

Samsung Fascinate to arrive online on September 8 via Verizon Wireless

Posted: 07 Sep 2010 06:19 PM PDT

What makes the Samsung Galaxy S so special? Well, it comes in many variants to different carriers in the US, and the latest carrier to receive their Galaxy S would be Verizon Wireless with the Samsung Fascinate. It is touted to arrive via online order on September 8th, with brick and mortar stores delivering the phone to users’ hands a day later. As with many other high end smartphones these days, Verizon Wireless has settled for a $199.99 price point – this also after a $100 mail-in rebate with a new two-year customer agreement. Those who have an agreement which is about to expire as well as others who want to pick up a new handset might just want to check out the Fascinate considering it is more than a decent smartphone to get you started.

Unfortunately, it will not come with Android 2.2 Froyo right out of the box, but at least we have the guarantee that Verizon Wireless will be rolling out the Android 2.2 update in due time, so you will have to make do with Android 2.1 for the moment. Thanks to its Super AMOLED Screen Technology, your eyes will definitely be blown away – not to mention benefitting from advanced touch screen capabilities for added ease of use. Other hardware specifications include Samsung’s 1GHz Cortex A8 Hummingbird Application Processor running proceedings from within, a virtual QWERTY keyboard with SWYPE technology for faster typing, a pre-loaded version of Amazon’s Kindle for Android app, as well as a range of accessories that we will look at in the paragraph below.

The Charging Cradle will work as a phone charger, where it will feature a micro USB wall adapter that lets you view movies, display digital photos, and listen to music. Heck, it also doubles up as a desktop speakerphone to let you continue with your conversation while keeping both hands free to handle other stuff. The charging cradle will set you back by $29.99. As for the Car Dock, this can be attached to the windshield or dashboard, where the car dock displays turn-by-turn GPS navigation instructions, can rotate freely between landscape and portrait modes, and comes with a preloaded Samsung “Car Home” application, all going for $39.99. Last but not least is the Backup Battery Charging System that comprises of a 1500 mAH battery, battery charger and Y-cable that will juice up your handset and spare battery simultaneously, retailing for $39.99.
