Mr. Hyde Robotic Top Hat

Posted: 10 Sep 2010 03:51 PM PDT

If you love Halloween and DIY projects, then this hat is the perfect combination.  It’ll be enough to keep you busy for quite a while, plus you’ll have something fun to show off come Halloween.  This hat features a head that pops out, can move around and even make a little noise.  Of course I hope you have some artistic sculpting skills, because you’ll need them to make the head for this hat.

You can read through the full Instructables tutorial to figure out if you really think you can pull off the job.  You can even watch a video to really see the hat in action.  This is definitely not a simple project, but it could be well worth the effort.  It’ll probably also take a decent amount of tools and electronics.  One little snag with it, due to the way it was designed it will drain the battery after you activate the hat a dozen times.  Then again, you may figure out a better way of making the hat so that you’ll get around that issue.

Playstation 3 DualShock 3 Wireless Controller in pretty pink

Posted: 10 Sep 2010 03:23 PM PDT

I know that pink is the stereotypical color gadget makers flock towards when they’re looking to make a girl gadget, but you still can’t help but love a few of the gadgets.  Well now you can even play your favorite PS3 games with a bright pink DualShock 3 Wireless Controller.  Sure, you’ll catch a little grief from any male competitors, but you can’t help but enjoy beating them with a pink controller.

I really like that gadget makers are seeming to understand that it’s nice to have more than one color option.  Sure, most computer cases, monitors and gaming consoles stay in neutral colors, but at least the accessories are getting a bright coat of paint every now and then.  These pink controllers are already hitting online and are listed for $55 a piece.  They’re supposed to actually become available on September 21st.

Prius Gets Louder To Protect Pedestrians

Posted: 10 Sep 2010 01:12 PM PDT

It’s hard not to be shocked by how quiet a Prius is once it’s switched over to running on electric at low speeds.  There is virtually no sound coming from the car, which should make it no surprise that the US auto safety agency has found that hybrids are twice as likely to be involved in a pedestrian accident at low speeds.  When you’re crossing the road or walking along it, you rely just as much on your ears as you do your sight.  Having a car on the road that makes no sound can make roads more dangerous, which is why Toyota is offering a speaker system that makes a whirring sound.

The whirring sound is meant to sound similar in volume to a normal car engine.   It’s becoming available in Japan for the newest Prius and will also be offered for any new hybrids from Toyota.  You can buy the system for about $150.  I’m not sure if a whole lot of drivers will be rushing out to spend the money after they’ve already bought the car.  Just like how you never remember you need new wiper blades until it’s raining, it’d take a close call to get a lot of people motivated enough.  However, if they already have it installed on the car I imagine it’d make drivers feel better.  It would put a bit of a damper on your day if you accidentally hit someone.
