Swoop the Owl keeps your iPhone safe while you are sleeping

Posted: 16 Jun 2011 11:40 AM PDT

This particular iPhone accessory is Swoop the Owl, and it reminds me a lot of the Woogie.

Although the Woogie plush device is designed to be used to protect the iDevice from small children, it would appear that Swoop the Owl protects the iDevice from adults. You know how must people sleep with their phones these days for the sake of the alarm or music, so why not have an extra level of protection?

Not only that, the user can still use their iDevice, but any calls should probably be used with a headset. It looks like it has a place for the headphones in case you want to listen to some tunes before you sleep.

I think that I am going to see a lot of stuffed animals/iPhone accessories like Swoop the Owl, and I wouldn’t be surprised if they are based on franchises rather than original characters. For example, I can see this being used on an Ewok or a Mogwai, but those are more eighties cuddly characters. I’m not certain what would be used today, Justin Bieber?

Anyway, this is another Kickstarter project, which means the designers are looking for money. However, you can pre-order it for about $25 per Swoop the Owl.

Fab Lab Solar Powered Wooden House

Posted: 16 Jun 2011 11:00 AM PDT

Okay, so what are we looking at here? It is the Fab Lab, which one of those awesome environmentally friendly houses.

As you can see, it has what you would expect from these concept homes. First of all, it has a weird shape. In fact, it is so odd, that I don’t have name to describe it. It’s definitely asymmetrical, and a blend of a cylinder, and rectangular solid. I suppose that the best description is something like E.T.’s head.

Then there is the solar powered aspect of it. Apparently, the Fab Lab that “generates more than twice the energy it needs to function”. Seriously, a house that actually gives out more energy than it takes away? Man, that is a good role model for all of us homeowners.

Of course, the house is made of wood, which does damage trees. However, trees are a renewable resource, if you do it right. By the way, all of the interior furniture here is made of wood too.

To answer your question, yes, I would live here. However, I got a family, and this Fab Lab doesn’t have a lot of space. I wonder if they could design a family-sized house that can be as energy efficient as this.

The iPhone Air Guitar

Posted: 16 Jun 2011 10:32 AM PDT

Considering that Guitar Hero is no longer going to be made with new editions, one can’t help but wonder what the future of music gaming is. It would appear that someone believes that the next phase of music gaming is mobile with this Air Guitar Move.

The Air Guitar Move is a combination of hardware and an iPhone, and there is a motion sensing guitar pick for strumming away. As the user strums the connector, he or she uses the iPhone as a fretboard. As you might have guessed, there is an App for it.

So far, this is one of those Kickstarter projects, which means that it needs some funding in order to get it going. The designers, Ronald Mannak and Colin Karpfinger, are building their hardware at the same place where Guitar Hero was built, and have the same engineering team working on it.

Considering that a lot of music games on mobile platforms are not as cool as the plastic instruments on music games on the console, I just can’t see a mobile game breaking new ground on the music gaming front. Until now, at least.

The designers of the Air Guitar Move need about $25,000 in the next 25 days. Generally, Kickstarter donors get the item after a good donation, so this is probably the fastest way you’ll get it.

Western Digital Nomad rugged case for your hard drive

Posted: 16 Jun 2011 06:30 AM PDT

Western Digital has long released hard drives in the portable and not-so-portable form factors, but this time around they decide to work on the former – through the idea of a protective case to ensure your hard drive remains safe and secure from most general knocks and bumps which do plague the hard drive during its lifetime, albeit for some occasionally.

The WD Nomad rugged case might be aptly named, since it will cater for those who tend to do a whole lot of traveling, and when once moves about a whole lot, it increases the chances of something bad happening to your hard drive which could be sitting nice and safe inside a desktop computer chassis in your home. The Nomad rugged case is no pushover, where this durable case will keep My Passport portable hard drives safe from drops as high as seven feet, moisture and spills and other mishaps that normally occur with active, on-the-go lifestyles. The average road warrior would do well to get one of these, since you can never quite tell when Murphy would strike.

The WD Nomad rugged case will sport a polycarbonate exterior and shock-absorbing elastomer cushion on the inside. For those who are concerned with standards and specifics, the Nomad does not disappoint since it conforms to strict military standards (MIL-STD-810G) where ruggedness is concerned. Apart from that, it will sport a heavy-duty latch and silicon liner that will seal out dirt, dust, and moisture.

This uniquely functional design also boasts of an opening for the drive’s USB connector that makes it possible for you to access the drive even when it remains within the case. Of course, those who have dealt with hard drives would know that they tend to get hot over time, so we do wonder just how well the ventilation process is on the WD Nomad as the hard drive remains parked inside.

For added protection, a molded exterior ring has been thrown into the mix, paving the way for users to attach a carabiner, cable, or nylon strap for added and convenient accessibility. Now for those who are interested in picking up the WD Nomad rugged case, make sure you have one of the following hard drive models from Western Digital themselves first – My Passport Essential, My Passport Essential SE, My Passport Elite, My Passport for Mac, and My Passport SE for Mac. Want one? It can be purchased for $29.95 a pop.

The Solar Fountain Birdbath

Posted: 16 Jun 2011 05:30 AM PDT

Since summer is here for us folks living in the northern hemisphere, it goes without saying that birds would like to come out and frolic as well, and if you set up a birdbath, they would definitely love to have a go at it. However, getting that birdbath’s water to act as a fountain all by itself would require electricity, and you can either use magic, plug it in to your power outlet, or rely on solar energy as the Solar Fountain Birdbath does.

The name itself gives the game away, where your birdbath will perpetually deliver a spring of gently cascading water, courtesy of the solar panel that is located in the center of the fountain that ensures the internal pump remains powered continuously. Only moderate sunlight is required to power the fountain for up to six hours after an eight-hour charge. $179.95 to go green in your garden? Not too shabby at all.

G155 Mobile Gaming Environment

Posted: 16 Jun 2011 05:00 AM PDT

If you tend to do a whole lot of traveling, then surely you would have something to keep yourself occupied especially on those long transits. Some people rely on their iPhone or iPod touch, others prefer a more hardcore gaming experience in the form of a Sony PSP or a Nintendo 3DS. Either way, games are the perfect (and popular) way to kill time these days, so it is no surprise that we see yet another peripheral hit the market in the form of the G155 Mobile Gaming Environment.

The £299.99 price tag might just scare off most folks, but wait for a while and read what it is capable of doing. This unique gaming peripheral allows you to enjoy your gaming on the go as long as there is a nearby power socket. Featuring an integrated 15.5″ LED HD display, it will be accompanied by a pair of stereo speakers, a fitted foam base and velcro straps that ensure your gaming hardware remains right where it is supposed to be while you save the world from an alien invasion. With a hard plastic shell protecting it from knocks and scratches, the lightweight design is even TSA compliant to let you tote it on an airplane as hand luggage.

A 3.5mm headphone jack tops off the list for a personal portable gaming environment – we just wonder whether the price is well worth it or not, or just get a Nintendo 3DS or PSP instead.
